Dame Maggie is truly a global treasure. It's always a special treat to hear her. Really chuffed my tiny TH-cam membership payments can help keep the Institute going and get such presenters their stage.
@@TheRoyalInstitution Please don't have her at the RI again. The title for the original talk at the RI was about the JWST and the discoveries that we have made as a result. She took 47 minutes to even bring up the JWST, and basically said nothing about it. I notice that you have changed the title/description of this video compared to what you wrote at the atual RI talk. The people around me in the crowd were as discontent as I was. To pay money to go to the Ri on a satuday night, to see a specialist talk about JWST was what you had stated and what I had paid for. Not a celebrity talk about herself for an hour.
To get to Proxima B we need a new branch of Science. As Electromagnetism was to the electron, we must react similarly to the Higgs field to move a spaceship to near-light speed.
I have ideas and understanding but lack education. Is there any where I can give some of these ideas to the institute? Through a trusted method? I feel obligated to reach out.
It was an absolute pleasure to meet you that evening. And Thankyou SO much for the beautiful message in my book. You are an inspiration, especially to a young woman of colour who looked up to the stars for guidance and hope and dreamed of becoming an astrophysicist. Now that dream is coming true 🥹 💫
Interesting content, but she panics me with her frequent rapid gasps for air. I'm afraid I will swallow my tongue (mirror neurons at work). I'm down to 0.6 speed now so that I can breathe safely. 😃
Perfect speaking speed for me this. I am understanding x10 more. Sonks in better. So much clearer explanations than Brian Cox who is a nice guy but way too slow and ponderius for my particular style. I fall asleep listening to BC and i forget point 1 waiting for point 2 from him. I like Maggie's passion and speed. It is no problem for me.
I found myself getting distracted by the carelessly inconsistant data points she throws out. If she spoke to "180 kids a day" for three minutes each, that's 9 hours, assuming no time for bathroom or meal breaks, and not allowing for any time it takes to change from one kid to the next. OK, maybe she ate at her workspce, and has an iron bladder as well, but were they really having the kids in school for longer than 8 am to 5 pm? Also, everything else seems to have been 20 or 25 years in the past. When she was at Uni "20-odd years ago" (she got her PhD in 1994), she says we couldn't have telescopes much larger than the William Herschel's 4.2 metres. Then a couple of minutes later, she mentions both that the 8 metre VLT is 25 years old, and that she's been doing science communication "for about 20 years". Something definitely not added up here . I'm only 37 minutes into the video, so she's only just first mentioned the JWST in passing ( 🙄 ), but now I'm wondering how of what she says about it can be trusted, and how much I need to fact-check. Edit: I finished watching the whole video now, and it turns out I didn't need to worry about checking what she said about the JWST, because she said _very little about it_ ! The telescope's name doesn't belong in the video title at all. 🤬
I couldn't agree more. I was at this RI talk, me and the complete strangers around me were amazed at the lack of scientific content in the video. It was titled as a talk about the JWST and the discoveries we have made. Didn't mention the JWST for about 47 minutes. The RI is amazing, all the other talks I have been to have been great. This isn't science, this is celebrity and the RI are better than this.
Better now she doesn't gabble at light speed, but she needs a lot of coaching, still. Slow down for goodness sake! Full marks for enthusiasm. Nil points for watchability.
This was the most misleading RI talk I've ever been to. I notice the description on this youtube video - is not the description or title for the actual talk itself. If people want hear Maggie talk about herself for an hour - then fair enough, so this youtube title is fine. But the talk was supposed to be about the JWST and what we have learnt from the images. Took 47 minutes for her to even mention the JWST. She doesn't seem to know much about the discoveries of the JWST. Was so dissapointed with this talk, was going to complain to the RI, I guess this youtube comment will have to do.
She speaks so fast, training as a GP, this would fail you in all clinical exams. I believe she would benefit from some coaching on how to modulate her speech.
Wonderful woman ! The enthusiasm, the fun. Such a bright light.
I love Maggie Aderin-Pocock, her enthusiasm for science is infectious!
MAGGIE for all the next Christmas Lectures !!!! YES????
God no, imagine listening to her talk about herself for 7 days in a row

Thank you so much for your support, we hugely appreciate it!

She is very funny and enthusiastic. I like her.
Did I just watch that on 2x speed by mistake?? Either way she is awesome 🙌
A real gem!❤
Great lecture
Thank you.

She speaks so fast
Wow 😮
I played it back at 85% speed to get it to a normal speaking rate

Wicked awesome!!! ….also Wicked minus singing

Lovely message, I'm looking for young black women to mentor my 5yr old daughter.
I had to put this back to 0.75 playback speed for it to sound normal

Felix Flicker's hard swallowing got me terribly in an RI lecture he gave. I was really sick, though.
luv it

Dame Maggie speaks so fast that I find it uncomfortable. So I slowed the video down to .75 speed.
Dear RI, please don't go the TED way. Stick to sharing genuine knowledge, not drama. no offense meant to the celebrity scientist.

I'm a simple person. I see Maggie Aderin-Pocock, I click
Yes, you really are quite simple, Maggie is fantastic, but these copy and paste TH-cam comments are not. Please stop with them

Is Space Scientist an actual scientific title? Or is it more a term that's used for "celebrity scientists?
Comic Sans on a scientists' CV?
Why I never...
Can’t listen to. I’ve never heard anyone speak this fast
I don't belong on Earth either.
