  • In today’s project, we’re taking a look at firewood storage and seasoning/drying. We’ll touch on firewood bulk bags and which type work better than others. How they are filled with splitter and conveyor, moved with tractor or skid steer, and stored with covers. We’ll also look at indoor storage inside the barn, specifically the firewood cribs. Talk design, filling and unloading with the conveyor. The moisture meter makes an appearance to check some older wood in the barn. Grab your favorite beverage and come along for the tour.

    I held off on bags for so long because of the cons. Lifespan of the bags and increased overhead but I’m a believer now. My business has grown enough I just found stacking wood such a choke point for me. It’s so draining of time and energy. The bags pay for themselves from increased efficiency. No way I would go back to stacking.

    Of the seven wood yard channels I frequent,yours
    Is in the top three that I favor,
    Because of your firewood methods and the quality and your attention to detail with your video making skills.
    The other factor is that your paradigm is like no one else's,
    Very similar end result though.
    Wishing you continued success,
    We appreciate the time and effort that you take to share your wood yard adventures.

      Just replied to your other comment, but I'll address this one for continuity. I never implied anyone had to use bags. I'm in the firewood business, using bags is the best option for that business. I arrived at that conclusion through many years of trial and error, and learning from others in the field who took the time to mentor me. I'm sharing my knowledge of what works for me, in hopes of mentoring someone else and saving them the trouble. I won't ever apologize for having and using nice equipment, I earned it, but that doesn't mean I'm belittling anyone who doesn't have that equipment. If you were my neighbor, I'd gladly loan you my splitter, tractor, or pick up an axe and help you split your wood. Again, appreciate you watching!

    Best decision I have made so far is to use the log lift bags. Huge time and back saver. Customers love them. The investment pays. Guys can start small. I charge a deposit get most all back and reuse them. I am reusing them for the fourth time now and none have I taken out of service yet. I set my bags up with t-post and a post-pounder. Keep it, simple sweetie. Carpe diem!

      That's been our experience as well. Love hearing it working out for other folks. I actually retired my first Log Lift bag this week, it was from 2017. Started to tear as we were loading, tied it up with paracord and finished the delivery with no issues. I like your idea with the T posts, will have to give that a shot. Really appreciate you watching!

    I see many people use IBC totes (bladder removed) and cut an access door on one side for easier stacking. The larger ones (330 gal I believe) hold one standard face cord of neatly stacked firewood. If you have a tractor or piece of equipment able to move a full tote of green (unseasoned) firewood, then this method is pretty good as it minimizes the number of times you have to manually handle the firewood.

    • @FoxfireProjects
      @FoxfireProjects  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The IBC totes work great. We went with the face cord bags, because that is the unit of measure we sell most. The wood comes off the conveyor and fills the bags, without any stacking needed. Then the machines take it from there. Thanks so much for watching!

  • @brandonpaul5712
    @brandonpaul5712 ปีที่แล้ว

    I am just making wood for myself right now but I plan on selling some this fall. I have lots of ibc totes but I think even if I charge a deposit, customers will end up keeping my totes. I think the log lift bags would eliminate part of that problem because they work great for firewood, but not a lot of other things so hopefully the customers would return them. It's good to know you can get a few seasons out of them.

    • @FoxfireProjects
      @FoxfireProjects  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's awesome, I wish you the best of luck in your new business. The bags almost always seem to find their way back to us. I think a lot of the time, seeing the empty bag actually reminds folks to reorder wood, which is great. Thanks so much for watching!

    Another great video!! Hey question, how come you don’t stack the wood in the barn into the bags so you don’t have to double lift? Also what do you prefer plastic or wood pallets ?

    • @FoxfireProjects
      @FoxfireProjects  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much! The wood in the barn is mainly super small split cooking wood. We just don't have room for so many bags at this location, so we fill the barn. There's enough margin, given the higher price for the cooking wood, to cover double handling. Plastic pallets are great, but nearly impossible to find for free these days. We have many wood pallets leftover at my day job from deliveries to the shop, so most of the time I end up using those, just to get rid of them. Appreciate you watching!

      FANTASTIC idea! Going to try this on my 4 bag stacks, as the tarp sometimes gets a low spot in the middle and collects a puddle of rain. Thinking a pallet underneath may prevent as well as allow additional air flow. Thanks for watching!
