    You can really tell how proud everyone was of BART back then!

      It's because they had problem solvers back then. Not the incompetent morons they have now. If you are an employee you would see this every day at any yard, any station.

    The first chance I got to fly someplace from New York, I chose San Francisco as a destination. BART was the main reason. There was little more than a few photographs or articles available to me. To learn about other transit systems you really had to travel and see them first hand. So nice to this film finally after a half century.

    This is pretty cool. I love Bart, used to ride it a lot, visit a few people I knew in Central and was one of the few that was able to stay in there longer than most. Miss them days and I recall there was a show I think on PBS in the bay area that had a show System Performance I think and it had a few shows on Bart and everything about it. Was very cool and also loved Hayward Yard. Still to this day even though I'm a thousand or so miles away I can still listen to Bart's radio traffic and know what is going on. Love it and Bart keep up the great work, I hope to make a visit in the future so I can finally ride the new cars.

    BART seems much safer back then

      It was, but the cops were real nazis back then too. They would chase any drunk or drugged hippie away from station property. They wouldn't even allowed to touch the escalators befer they were summarily thrown out face first. Now they let them jump the gates right in front of the cops and BART booth attendants.
      We really need to relearn how to police public spaces without making the cops rabid psychos, but also without having a bunch of disruptive drugged up people everywhere.

    th-cam.com/video/Y_zyWaabRs4/w-d-xo.html Greetings from SoCal. Yes, the 405 though the Sepulveda Pass has been widened a half a dozen times since RTD filmed this and around when BART filmed this.

    What is the date or year of this film? Their explanation of block signals suggests it was a few years after first opening, but it seems we don't ever see a train to San Francisco.

      Bart started operation in 1972, but the trans bay tube wasn't opened until 1974, so my guess would be that this was filmed in 72 or 73. But that's really just a guess, so who knows!

      I think it took them a couple of years to get all the systems online. It was a very ambitious system. In retrospect, it's a very impressive system given the technology of the time!

    I wish we could regain some of that space-age magic and restore BART to it's normal safe, clean, and fast self! The current BART board is destroying the system!

    I was once a BART Director. I now believe BART should be PRIVATIZED. Japan has a wonderful railway system run by Private Enterprise. The Japanese railways are good because the owners have to satisfy passengers. BART just slurps up sales tax revenue and state and federal subsidies. CA should follow Japan's example and sell BART to the private sector. In my view, much of the acreage BART owns for parking lots would better be utilized for housing.👎

    • @TohaBgood2
      @TohaBgood2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Nonsense. Japan's rail system is private in name only. They are government franchises that make most of their money off of real estate. You tell me how many of our local NIMBYs would accept BART as an unregulated real estate developer? How many skyscrapers would BART be allowed to build to pay for subsidized passenger operations before the local landed gentry tear it to shreds?
      You really need to learn about the complicated dance between the government, the for-profit carriers, the corrupt officials, and the Yakuza that keeps Japan's rail system miraculously afloat. It's not something that can or should be replicated.

      @@TohaBgood2 Your post represents the kind of Socialism the Democratic Party now embraces. It elected Donald Trump and may now elect Ron Desantis. The bloated public sector has failed in both the fields of transportation and education. I admit this even though I once served as a BART Director. In a previous post you actually agreed with my believe that the current BART Board is mismanaging the agency. When you talk about NIMBYS you are right: The reason CA has a worse problem with homelessness than Texas is because of wrong-headed zoning and planning laws that inhibit creation of working class housing 👎
