They were teenagers at the time of the murder. It was a horrible crime. But I do think that Anne Perry’s life since her release from prison does argue in favor of trying children as juveniles. Imprisonment is intended both as punishment and as needed to protect the public. Anne Perry has not posed a danger to the public as an adult.

I agree with you most of the time Dr. Grande but I can't agree with you on why the book is so popular. I don't think many of the book's readers know anything about Delias' past. The book is successful because it tells a compelling fantasy story of a young girl abandoned in the woods and how she coped. It doesn't hurt that there is a murder mystery entwined in the plot.

I'm from Louisiana and have only called them crawfish, but the book isn't set in Cajun country, but in NC marshes. There's no telling what diction they use in that local area. You can't police language.

While I don't excuse their behaviour in any way, I can add a few insights from working in conservation... firstly, it can be be extremely dangerous if you are working against poachers. When you are in the middle of the bush a thousand miles from any help or police, these people have no qualms in taking out their competition or witnesses. Even today, with govt funded national parks, rangers from the local tribes & all our technology there are _still_ rangers shot & killed every year... and this couple was working in the 1970/80's. So I can understand the frustration & fear & anger that starts to set in, and why they leaned into the military-style training.
This couple were also some of the first to incentivise the locals to protect their own wildlife, to make protection of their natural assets more lucrative than allowing poaching... but it wasn't a common practice back then. When you're constantly dealing with landowners & govt officials who don't care about conservation it can be really easy to slip into a morally superior attitude where you know best. _Especially_ when you're spending extended periods of time away from cities & people who can hold your behaviour to account.
I don't doubt that this couple went too far in their methods & it's appalling if they did kill someone. But it's really important to assess this story in the context of the time & situation they were in & not assume it's comparable to today.

Then I came across some news or someone else's commentary about the writer having murdered someone and gotten away with it. Your comment on here brings to light and clarifies all that. I guess one can still enjoy a book/story even if the writer of said book is controversial. Life isn't black and white.

I read the book and enjoyed it The book is not great literature, but it is a good read and a good story. I would describe it as a "pastime" book

I don't get why killing that guy was such a controversy that absolutely would not go away. I don't think killing poachers is wrong. Killing people to save innocent people is fine, and animals are living things that can feel pain, so why is killing people who are going to butcher animals not okay? It's okay if people tried to do that to livestock, but why if the animals are instead in a sanctuary or endangered, it's suddenly different?

I saw an episode of "I shouldn't be alive" where a small plane crashed out in the middle of nowhere in Africa and being stranded ended up being worse than the actual plane crash. I can't imagine flying over there and putting myself in a situation where I was being shot at.

She probably would have done better if she had written about her true life (sounds exotic with many turns) and help of a ghost writer? As for me, you just saved me a couple days of reading, thanks.

The irony is: we have people here in this "woke" political/cultural climate who think it is just fine to kill poachers.

How entitled do you have to be to go to someone else's country and behave the way they did? This man wanted to kill regardless and used his agenda as a front.

I was so stoked when I saw this pop up on TH-cam. I had been wanting to know your thoughts on this case. Wonderful analysis. I find their behavior and attitudes disturbing. Wonder if woke Hollywood who fully embraced Black Lives Matter will nominate this movie for any awards. Their hypocrisy is often so blatant, I wouldn’t be surprised

I liked the book, even though the development of the main character was unrealistic. I have serious doubts that an abandoned 5 year old would survive, let alone grow up to be a functional adult.

As soon as somebody recommends the book on the web, it starts selling. So this will be the reason why it is selling so good now and not right after it was published.

They are both extremely courageous people: the governments were not willing to protect the animals from poachers, so this gutsy couple did it. They took a huge risk. They hate cowards who run away from facts (most of the general public today is like that), hence the vibes they give you aren't that warm. But at the end of the day, they're good people.

A friend of mine loaned me what I have come to call "That Crawdad Book." I simultaneously liked and loathed it. The writing contained far too much boomer sentimentality, yet I read it to the end. I will never read it again. I'm ashamed that I sortof enjoyed it.

Surprised that, *that* book was connected to this woman. She wrote fiction? Now with this movie release - perhaps, the earlier "mysterious Zambia murder" was dramatization too?
