Great movie. I saw this in the movies when it first came out. My Uncle a college professor took me. At the time I was in college and enrolling in a senior ROTC Program and this movie inspired me. I did complete ROTC, received my commission and took the exact oath as they did in the movie and started my career in the Regular Army as a commissioned officer. This movie always brings back great memories of my youthful 20's and that journey when I served in the military 😎
This movie affected me similarly. I went to college and saw this movie while going, but married a woman who was deadset against having a soldier (or sailor, or airmen, etc...) as a husband. After our divorce, I joined under the WOFT program, like you, mainly because of this movie. I LOVED my career and retired a CW4.

This was a big movie for Richard Gere and for Debra Winger, getting attention and advancing their careers for both. It was also loved for its pro military viewpoint in the story. It was a patriotic time back then, and military personnel of all branches were loved and respected overall.
It was a period heavy on military and cold war propaganda after the atrocities we committed in Korea and Vietnam. The military sucked then and it sucks now. Never trust pro military propaganda.
I saw this in the theatre in the summer of 1982. It was one of the biggest movies of the year. Lou Gossett Jr. won the Oscar for this movie. You would not believe how many classic movies came out in the summer of 82. A fun Lou Gossett Jr. movie is "Enemy Mine".
Don't forget he also won an Emmy for his work as "Fiddler" in Roots. Then in 1970 he was in the Blaxploitation Movie The Landlord with Beau Bridges, Lee Grant (whose daughter Dinah Manoff played Marty In Grease). Beau worked with the cream of the Crop of Black Talent, Pearl Bailey, Diana Sands, and Chris Calloway the daughter of Cab Calloway who was on the US Soap Opera The Doctors.
Debra Winger grew up in my neighborhood and went to my HS, but she was a few years ahead of me. In the early 1970's she was a costumed Troll at Magic Mountain (A few years later, I was a Ride Operator at MM) and almost died when she tumbled out the back of a Cushman cart. She spent months in the hospital, blind and partially paralyzed. Fortunately she recovered.
Interesting fact about Richard Gere & Debra Winger, which was, they actually couldn't stand each other while making this movie, yet in their later years, learned to move passed their differences. These days, they joke with one another about all that friction between them during the shooting of "An Officer And A Gentleman" Yet, they had to not only suppress all of those real-life negative feelings during their scenes, but also give convincing performances, as if they were actually in-love with each other, which is a real testament to their acting abilities. These days, on the very rare occasions when they actually do run into each other at some event, Richard will jokingly ask Debra, "Are you still talking sh_t about me?", to which she will respond in fun, "No, I'm not talking sh_t about you."
The same thing happened with Mickey Rourke & Kim Basinger with 9 1/2 Weeks. Neither one of them achieved superstar status. Mickey became an Alcoholic while Kim went broke due to a property deal whose ex husband alec baldwin is in big trouble over the carelessness on the set of The Western he was directing.
This movie was like a "pre-Top Gun"- 4 years before I believe. A drama based on how you get to be a Naval Aviator-with all the ingredients. It was a staple on all the cable services (HBO, Showtime, Cinemax) when I was in college and one of my favorites. Glad you picked it up..ok a patreon sponsored it, but still...

This is a very GOOD film and one of my favorites too. That scene with Gere and Gossett ( where Gossett wanted the DOR from Gere ) always makes me cry,every time.Gere being vulnerable and sincere saying-I GOT NOWHERE TO GO !!! I got-NOTHING,hits my soul with their acting and the dialog.

You didn't catch the trainee who failed the water test portrayed by David Caruso. We were talking about this film in an English class long ago. The Prof pointed out that the father of Winger's character was an officer, but not a gentleman. Zac's friend who committed suicide was a gentleman, but not an officer.

I was a 2/c Cadet when this movie came out. We had local girls showing up for dances trying to get a husband. Wish I had a fraction of the action, but I don't look or act like Gere. I did look good in my dress whites.
If you ever watch the movie Scarface, the character Frank is played by the same guy who plays Richard Gere’s father in this movie; also plays Tom Hanks boss in the movie, Big. Versatile actor. Just thought of another: Seeger (An Officer and a Gentleman) is Eddie Murphy’s lady friend in Beverly Hills Cop. You’ve also got actors from Seinfeld, Little House on the Prairie, Better Call Saul, NYPD Blue, and Star Trek.

Btw Gossette does a great job as a Marine Drill Instructor just a couple of slips, the one I recall right now is the scene where he gives the new officer's their first salute. He holds his hand straight down along the seam of his trousers, no bent fingers or bent thumb.
Oooo I love little details like that. Not to be looking for "mistakes" but instead just knowing that certain discipline exists with all of its traditions and technique (much like how I view string players on film)

"Days of Heaven" and "Looking for Mr. Goodbar" are 2 good Richard Geer movies. "Days of Heaven" has a 97% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes. Winger and Geer didn't get along.
Since you mentioned Steve Martin, you might want to consider watching "A Simple Twist of Fate," with Catherine O'Hara, Gabriel Byrne, and Laura Linney.
Louis Gossett Jr. looked halfway tough and convincing in this role until R. Lee Ermey came along in Full Metal Jacket. I liked the fantasy that a kid could grow up on the streets of the Philippines and grow up a fighter like Zach Mayo. They should have given him some knife skills too. Those criticisms aside, I like this movie and your reaction. I hope some of my other reactors get to it.
1. Too bad this didn't get the love it deserved. 2. I've seen those two girls that ask young Zach what ship he's from. 3. The US Navy did not give backing to this film. 4. Richard Gere and Debra Winger couldn't stand each other. 5. The Producer didn't want Winger because he wanted someone "more bangable" (he used a different word). 6. Lisa Eilbacher was very athletic and really had to work hard not to be while playing Seeger. 7. BTW as a sailor who had to "endure" Hawaii for 3 1/2 years and I can tell you Lynette doesn't want to go there. My time there was 3 years 5 months too long. Not an 808 fan.
Omg I didn't even think about the big goal of Hawaii in the plot as not being what it thinks it is -- we just assume it is to go along with the plot happily! Funny to know the reality!
Reading some comments and seeing they got the wrong picture about the title: An officer and a gentleman. It doesn't mean you are both, it was about two types of men. Sid was the gentleman Mayo was the officer
Wrong. It doesn't mean that. It's about Zack Mayo becoming the man he is, an Officer and a Gentleman, a decent human being. By story end he is both but at the beginning he is neither yet. The movie is the journey he takes in becoming both an officer and a gentleman.

To be an Officer you have to have character and Mayo was lacking that bigtime because he didn't have good role models. That was entirely what Sgt. Foley was trying to teach him. That is not Top Gun….this is just their basic training….then if you do get chosen to fly you go to flight school…then once you are a pilot for awhile and you are good enough you can go to Top Gun school.
if you're a fan of a young Richard Gere (and his male appendage) you might want to take a look at 'American Gigolo', 'Breathless' and 'Looking for Mr. Goodbar'.
It isn't a comedy. You think he has been gray all of his life? He was 32 when it was released. When remarking about Zach's behavior remember it came from his father and being left alone in the Philippines while his dad was qt sea.

Constructive criticism is one thing, but Tom, u shld take it down a notch (F-bombs & saying "stupidly", really? - this isn't that big a deal). For wht it's worth Christina, I enjoyed the reaction. Unsure if it's noted in other comments, but a thread in the story is we all (as u said) hv our "walls to climb." Mayo was a loner. The scene when he gave up the record to help Segar "get over her wall" was affirming for them both. Unfortunately, Sid cldn't get over his wall. This is such a great movie. Glad u enjoyed it.
Thank you. Trivia: Naval officers were, and I believe are, considered to be Officers and Gentlemen. Previously, only gentlemen were accepted for training to become officers, though that had loosened up before the eighties. It is his character coming out through the training that makes him the Officer and Gentleman of the title. Please forgive me if this is all very obvious.
An Officer and a Gentleman : means you have to be both. It has to do with character, which is what the drill Sargeant keeps reminding them.

Btw Gossette does a great job as a Marine Drill Instructor just a couple of slips, the one I recall right now is the scene where he gives the new officer's their first salute. He holds his hand straight down along the seam of his trousers, no bent fingers or bent thumb.
Oooo I love little details like that. Not to be looking for "mistakes" but instead just knowing that certain discipline exists with all of its traditions and technique (much like how I view string players on film)
Yes, Richard Gere had it in him. Best scene in the movie and probably the best one in hs career.

"Days of Heaven" and "Looking for Mr. Goodbar" are 2 good Richard Geer movies. "Days of Heaven" has a 97% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes. Winger and Geer didn't get along.

Louis Gossett Jr. looked halfway tough and convincing in this role until R. Lee Ermey came along in Full Metal Jacket. I liked the fantasy that a kid could grow up on the streets of the Philippines and grow up a fighter like Zach Mayo. They should have given him some knife skills too. Those criticisms aside, I like this movie and your reaction. I hope some of my other reactors get to it.

3. The US Navy did not give backing to this film.
4. Richard Gere and Debra Winger couldn't stand each other.
5. The Producer didn't want Winger because he wanted someone "more
bangable" (he used a different word).
6. Lisa Eilbacher was very athletic and really had to work hard not to be while playing Seeger.
7. BTW as a sailor who had to "endure" Hawaii for 3 1/2 years and I can tell you Lynette doesn't want to go there. My time there was 3 years 5 months too long. Not an 808 fan.
nobody liked Debra Winger. Ask John Travolta and anybody who worked on 'Urban Cowboy'.
Omg I didn't even think about the big goal of Hawaii in the plot as not being what it thinks it is -- we just assume it is to go along with the plot happily! Funny to know the reality!
Reading some comments and seeing they got the wrong picture about the title: An officer and a gentleman.
It doesn't mean you are both, it was about two types of men.
Sid was the gentleman
Mayo was the officer
Wrong. It doesn't mean that. It's about Zack Mayo becoming the man he is, an Officer and a Gentleman, a decent human being. By story end he is both but at the beginning he is neither yet. The movie is the journey he takes in becoming both an officer and a gentleman.
@@vaskylark You have a good point there. Never looked at it like that. I thought it was about Sid and Mayo, two friends. one a Gentleman and one an officer. Maybe we are both right?
@@Smilies-hb3mr lol I did like Sid a lot and you are right he had the Gentleman bit down pat but that's not what it stands for. To be an Officer you have to have character and Mayo was lacking that bigtime because he didn't have good role models. That was entirely what Sgt. Foley was trying to teach him. Zack is the officer and the gentleman.

Thanks for reacting to tis great movie. Their love scene is still electric. I think it's Gere's best work. A younger Gere is also very good in the gritty 70's movie, Looking for Mr. Goodbar, with Diane Keaton. Winger is outstanding inTerms of Endearment.
I've been hearing about his other movies now. I'll have to check some out. And yes that scene is still on fire!! :)

I have been a Richard Gere fan since I furst saw this movie when it came out. I didn't like the comment you made "I didn't know Gere had it in him".
That is not Top Gun….this is just their basic training….then if you do get chosen to fly you go to flight school…then once you are a pilot for awhile and you are good enough you can go to Top Gun school.
An officer would not wear his cover indoors.

It isn't a comedy. You think he has been gray all of his life? He was 32 when it was released. When remarking about Zach's behavior remember it came from his father and being left alone in the Philippines while his dad was qt sea.

Constructive criticism is one thing, but Tom, u shld take it down a notch (F-bombs & saying "stupidly", really? - this isn't that big a deal). For wht it's worth Christina, I enjoyed the reaction. Unsure if it's noted in other comments, but a thread in the story is we all (as u said) hv our "walls to climb." Mayo was a loner. The scene when he gave up the record to help Segar "get over her wall" was affirming for them both. Unfortunately, Sid cldn't get over his wall. This is such a great movie. Glad u enjoyed it.

Trivia: Naval officers were, and I believe are, considered to be Officers and Gentlemen. Previously, only gentlemen were accepted for training to become officers, though that had loosened up before the eighties. It is his character coming out through the training that makes him the Officer and Gentleman of the title. Please forgive me if this is all very obvious.
