This woman, honestly a goddess, truly loves her job and is good at it, please, please give her the credit she deserves, she deals with our worst nightmares, thank you!
I use to be an embalmer in the Philippines for good 5 years, but I quit because I can't handle children, breaks my heart. I left the job and moved abroad here in Australia. Now I'm a chef. I tell you this job is not for every one it takes a very special person to do this kind of thing. Much respect to you mam!
I agree with ur comment . I lost my only child 3 years ago. It heartwarming to know most people that do this line of work are so respectful to our loved ones. I happen to know the funeral director who took care of my son so I wasn’t worried. I bet many are though. Thankyou
Years ago, I asked a friend who was a mortician to allow me to watch this process start to finish. I had seen every other part of the death process; I needed to see this as well. He was kind enough to let me watch him embalm several people. This was done with absolute respect for the deceased. While seeing the actual process is not something I recommend everyone do, it was essential for me. I was amazed at how it actually works, the problems that the mortician may run into and how they deal with it. I was also appreciative of this in depth look at the miraculous workings of the human body. But more than anything else, the most valuable affirmation I got from this is to know for myself that what the mortician is working on is an empty shell. The living presence has left the clay behind. It is one thing to be taught this, even to believe it. It is a precious gift to experience this for yourself. Thank you to the people who do this service; they are more important to the comfort of the families than most realize.
Ur respect for the deceased is so empathic & caring....a great comfort for the families mourning their loved ones. Thanku for deconstructing the mysterty that is associated with funeral parlours.
Kari, your tour was above and beyond anything I’ve learned from friends who are/were in the funeral industry. You should be very proud of this video. Thank you.
I’m a 64 year old RN & I work in long term care with the frail elderly. At one time, prior to nursing school, I did consider becoming a mortician. I found this fascinating & would think it would be interesting to observe the process. I’m glad to know there are gentle & caring people like you who take care of my beloved residents when they leave me. Thank you. You are truly special.
rebeccalynn0415, I’m a retired nurse (worked long term care too) that feels the same as you do. I could have done this when I was younger. Very fascinating to me.
I feel the same. Its something I always wanted to do with my life but never got around to it. Katie made this a very interesting video. Such a compassionate soul.
Thank you so much for everything you do. I'm a 27 year old only child, my parents got divorced when I was only one year old. I lost both of them in 2020 in the same six months completely unexpectedly. Broke me to shreds. But it's the hard workers that do the work you do, that helps me so much and made it actually bareable. You're such a wonderful woman, I wish you the best. ♥️
I'm so sorry for the loss of both of your parents in such a short amount of time. My thoughts and prayers are with you. I hope you have a great support system with extended family and friends. Blessings ~
I'm a nurse and even though I have seen alot of death you never get the opportunity to see this aspect of the end of life. I feel like the wonderful people in the funeral industry are definitely the unsung hero's of the difficulty journey when having to cope with a loved one passing away. I can personally say that when my grandma passed away I was shocked and delighted to see how much care they had put in to make her look like MY grammy. She was in liver failure and was swollen up 2 times her normal size when she passed. I was so worried about what I was going to see even though I'm a nurse and have become slightly more tolerant when dealing with death. When I walked up I was so happy to see her look like I wanted to remember her. I cried because I knew how much thought and care went and into preparing her. So thank you so much for all you do in the funeral industry. It makes a difference for sure!
Well Jamie E? That’s a very rude comment you put on here ! Remember something honey.....Even in Death, it cost to live and it cost to Die! So sorry that your heart is heavy! May God help you with your common ignorance! 🙁😂
It's hard work they do but I prefer the way we do it we wash our dead & bury them as quick as possible & we treat ours as alive so we respect the dead we don't put them face down we turn to wash as its disrespectful to put them face down & I'd prefer not to be pumped full of stuff & wired shut so I'm glad we only wash then buried
“Absent from the body is present with the Lord” what a very sweet , informative and compassionate presentation. Hurrah for the caretakers that prepares your love ones 🙏🙏 ☝️
@Christopher Conroy Those are spirits , not people spirits , have you heard of familiar spirits ? Their demonic realm . If they are people spirits that people can see then fill us in , it’s actually written in the Bible people were tried to be brought back from the dead but they were familiar spirits n it’s never good to tamper with that realm . Just sharing
Well Mary, that is 1 million % true (IF) (IF) a person is a Christian. So before you say things you apparently have no knowledge of, please don't comment .
I worked in close contact within the industry & learned alot. It IS an art making the deceased look as natural as possible, given the circumstances of their death's. Some funeral directors are more talented than others. A good presentation is a comfort to the family.Thank you for a really down to earth, intelligent & compassionate presentation.
My closest friend passed when she was 17 yrs old due to a heart condition that she was born with. Due to her condition her coloring in life was not great. When I went to her wake the casket was opened and the makeup was so heavy including her lips that were painted up with bright pink lipstick. Her parents wanted the open casket as it helps with closure. I think it would have been better if the casket was closed. To this day I remember that lipstick.
I'm a embalmer. You hit everything spot on. Well done. It's funny you mentioned getting fluid in your eyes. That happened to me today. Keep up the good work.
@@syg3540 No thats ilegal. A person has the right to donate their organs or body to science/hospitals but not everyone is approved. No funeral worker can legally sell your body or organs and there have been a few funeral homes shut down arrested and sued for attempting to
This is a very challenging profession. I had no idea how demanding it can be. You guys get the crown. Thank you for all you do, we appreciate everything you do. Much respect.
Yeah we'll talk about other law to the place to get cremated in everything and day later out first as a charge $5,000 and this was the the two years ago the charger was to wash them that is outrageous crazy they're going to burn them up so why you want them all cleaned up that's crazy how you are and I can't believe you draw here on the show tell people how they're going to just hurt to read to me not hurt but destroy their what they look like is gross
Why don't you stop all this crap and stop and just get off the channel tuck that people ask for writing you crazy that big needle I would never want that stuck in any of my relatives I guess it already been but you're a sicko you need to get off the air and I hope I can get enough people to get you off
Thank you so much for your passion, and service in this "end stage" of life. We ALL will die some day, it's comforting to know how the process behind the scenes is really carried out. Much appreciated!
A British physician said it best when he stated, "Think of a dead body as a house where the owner has moved out." Good analogy. The body is just a shell.
So right just a temple and its like a person moving out the soul and your spirit has journey to another ram the spirit lives on just a shell and spirit and soul dwelled.
@Robert Gardea You are so right! That is why I have decided, and told my family, that I DO NOT want to be embalmed! Not good for environment and also I want to go all natu-rel even if it means I have to be either refrigerated or to be buried asap. No metal coffin either....all wood. Better for the ground.
Not sure why this is in my recommended .. really not sure why I’m even watching this .. but you seem like a really respectful sweet lady who knows what she’s doing.
A funeral directors job description is very simple. 1 - prepare the stiff to be burned to a crisp, popped into a box and given to the family. Or, 2 - prepare the stiff to be buried. It's not rocket science.
@@rubyhancock5483 I said, her job is all about stiffy prep. She spends her working days with stiffys in her hands. This isn't the sort of job for somebody who doesn't enjoy holding stiffys.
@@dbrown44115 no organs get removed during embalming. Embalming is where you drain fluids from the body and pump embalming fluid back into it through the circulatory system.
Thanks, this presentation is so helpful and consoling. I often wondered how my wife’s body was handled and prepared when she died. The mortuary that I used did an exceptional job. Thanks again.
My husband and I decided to pay it forward and donate our bodies when we die. My hope is that my death can be someone else's salvation; my organs can help someone else live. 💖
Thank you for the informative. Video. You seem like a very caring and respectful person, and i for one would want you to personally administer to me in my time demise. Thank you for educating and explaining in layman terms. You are a gem!
That's great that y'all decided to do that, I'm not gonna do that, I'm going to be cremated, I'm disabled, I've been cut on a lot in my life, and I just feel like, I don't want that to happen to me anymore, but y'all are being really brave, and it's a great decision.
I appreciate the respect you show while explaining this process to us regular folks. You are very effectively teaching us the procedure of embalming, all while honoring those who were lost and needing your services. You are an amazing woman and I am thankful for the time you spent making this video so that we may better understand how this whole thing works. Outstanding work!
I don't care if others want to embalmed, but I don't. Not because of being worried about damage, but because it's expensive. I want a natural burial, just me in a hole. Feels most natural to me. I do want to thank you for taking the time to make this video. Learning about this was fascinating.
i dont wnat to be embalmed either me and my aunt talkd about this an di thinks its easier me and my aunt talked about this before she died of hep c she didnt want to be embalmed either in a slogan i use my corspe my choice
My husband recently passed and I was told that if you dont have an open casket or public viewing you dont get embalmed anyway. So I had to elect to have my husband embalmed. So if you dont want it to happen you cant be viewed..
@@sunshine121561 Embalming is NEVER required! It is not a law. If the funeral home told you it is, they committed a crime. They may have that policy, YOU have the right to go to a different funeral home. As for a viewing, my family and I see a dead body as nothing but an empty vessel. Please go to the YT channel Ask A Mortician, for more info on funeral laws.
So much respect for you and your profession. My father passed away suddenly in 2020. The local funeral home did an amazing job. Seriously considering becoming a mortician.
I'm a Pastor and I'm around death way to often and I'm so glad you are showing behind the scenes because this way people will know that there is nothing to fear and that there is the highest respect for the dead and the process of embalming is very good and practical. The embalmer has a big responsibility and trying their best to get the best results for the deceased and the family. Thanks again Pastor Steve Swaggerty
Pastor, well said!!! As a nurse, it is so very important to care for folks who pass away. We must care for them, praying for them and supporting their families. My faith as a Christian is strong and I know for sure the veil is lifted. Absence in the body is present with our Lord,
Hey Pastor, what the hell have you been smoking because I would like to buy some. When you die your body is done, period. Wasting land and polluting groundwater with formaldehyde so people can look at a dead body? No, it’s not respect, it’s a business. Try natural burial or cremation. Both options are more economical and easier on our environment.
@@jefftalbot8371 You are a complete ass. Everyone in this world has a right to choose the way they want to happen with their bodies after death. Yes cremation is cheaper but do you realize a "natural burial" can be harmful to the Earth depending on the sickness? Just because you are wrapped in a biodegradable shroud naked doesn't make it any better than this. Apparently you didn't listen to her when they said they fully clean the body and use a wide range of stuff depending on the person to use while embalming. You should keep your negative and rude comments to yourself.
I thought this was very informative and fascinating. I didn't realize the video was this long when I started watching but I couldn't pull myself away from it. You did an excellent (and professional) job with this. Thanks! 🙂
Hands down one of the most informative videos I've watched. Everything was done in a professional manner that didn't seem overly complicated and confusing.
I have never watched a video concerning this final sensitive part of one's life. You made this so comforting even though this is such a sensitive issue. Your soft spoken voice and compassionate personality made this so informative. I thank you for putting this very informative and educational video up explaining what we all will face one day. I feel so much more at ease now. God Bless You!
This is so impressive. Kari I loved the way you handled everything with such respect and gentle explanation. I learned about you from the Boys at Undertaking the Podcast and Grant Inman and his podcasts. This is definitely my new guilty pleasure.
Thank you so much. I have been in pathology (secretarial) for 50 years and never knew what is done to embalm a body, especially after autopsy. You are a very good presenter, great information on how you do your job and what is done to the body for a funeral. You are very respectful and have empathy for the family. I learned a lot. Thank you!
I just happened on this video. This was so informative. I never knew the behind the scenes process. Thanks for opening your prep room to us. You are a great instructor. Hats off to you.
You know it's very sad what they have to do to the bodies I was told they cut you under your arm under your side like under your armpit down there years ago when my mother-in-law died it seems like a poor body has to go through an awful lot to be laid out for a day or two it's like nobody cares and you sound like I don't know if you care cuz you keep laughing at things and I don't think of it anything is a bit funny I like to see how you would be if they would chopping on you all up and everything so I think it's kind of sick that you're doing this on TH-cam I sure wouldn't want you to do much to me about me
And I don't know why that says oh well Scott or whatever Scott on my video cuz I said more than that cuz I think it's just very very disturbing and disgusting that you're thinking it's too bad are you too better this the poor people and saying how old they look in this and that it gets very wrong I wouldn't want to be you doing it cuz it's to me disrespectful
Thank you for this video. I could see many moments where you suffered retelling some aspects. You are beautiful. Your soul is gracious. You deserve the best. May You receive kindness, love, and beatitude - in all of your life.
I find this surprisingly fascinating, and your attitude about your work "bringing back loved ones" is comforting. I fear it won't be much longer before we have to make funeral arrangements for my parents, and I hope they are prepared by somebody just like you.
By the way you explain everything in a comforting way and Jesus takes your soul to heaven when you pass this is why you don't endure any more pain or strife . Amen thks again.
Gosh I would pray someone like u took care of my loved ones when they past! I am a nurse and I work in the nursing home long time care so I fall in love with all of them and sit with them and pray with them if that's what they choose....I kinda always thought every one takes care of them like I do..yetbprob not true! It's nice to know there is really someone who cares like I do when they are no longer breathing
I am an ICU RN and fund this very interesting. When I was in college I worked at a funeral home one summer in the office. Thank you for being so respectful and educational.
My Mother passed 10 years ago. Still on my mind everyday. Saw this video and at this time can watch what happens. We had a wonderful funeral director. Never knew all he did but I remember thinking he was an artist. My Mother has dementia for 4 years, but he made her look like she use to before she got sick. God bless you all that help being that peace to families.
Thank you for opening my eyes to what is all involved for getting a loved one ready for visitation. I had no idea! I certainly now have greater respect for the skills that are required for a mortician. God bless you for your dedication for preserving the dignity of a loved one.
This was very interesting. I lost my dad 2 weeks ago to LBD, he was cremated per his wishes. My great aunt did hair for a funeral home for 25 yrs. You have a very kind nature.
Kari I have so much respect and admiration for people that have what it takes to do a job like yours does it take away your fear of dying and help you decide whether to be buried or creameated
My granddaughter is attending Gupton-Jones College of Mortuary Sciences. She’s always loved anatomy and cosmetology and psychology so she chose this field. You would be a terrific teacher at one of these schools!
I was a little afraid to watch this, but she gave a very professional & compassionate presentation that dispelled many fears I had about this. I worked for years as an ICU nurse, so am not "queezy" & I always wondered what the next process was for patients who passed away when families would ask questions.
this is something I've always been curious about. I love how even your facial expression were sensitive.. I love how through them you can tell you have passion. It takes someone special to do what you do.

"ABSENT FROM THE BODY, PRESENT WITH THE LORD" HELPED ME SO MUCH. I AM 81, NEEDED TO DECIDE IF I WANTED CREMATION OR NOT. BEGAN THE PROCESS OF PLANNING, BACKED OFF AND NOW FEEL I AM MORE PREPARED MENTALLY TO COMPLETE MY LAST WISHES, INSTEAD OF LEAVING IT FOR MY CHILDREN. THANK YOU.
Love to you. The question is do you see yourself being visited by family at the cemetery. Loved ones , taking flowers or tidy up your grave or not??? Is a nice beautiful vase at one of your children's home will do? Which child? Or do you have a favourite place , u wish your ash will scattered at??? Hopefully this help.

I'm so sorry about the loss of your mom. I lost mine when I was in 5tth grade. In 6th grade we took a field trip to the same funeral home she'd had her wake at. Well they took us to the basement where embalming etc took place.. It messed with me because as he showed what all the instruments did, all I could do was imagine my mom lying there. It wasn't easy. I give you props for your strength to watch this when you did. Anyway, I hope you have peace. It's never ever easy to lose anyone, especially a beloved parent. All my love to you.
What an excellent presentation! I've clocked many hours in prep rooms, starting at age fifteen, through mort school, and decades beyond, and you covered the basics perfectly.
Thank you so much for making these videos and explaining everything In a comforting way. I'm 25 and I'm very sick currently on palliative care. I hope I have years left but I have had a lot of questions of what happens to us when we die so watching your videos have been very comforting and educational for me!
Kari Northey Thank you so much for replying to me! One question I have is during the prep care can a person request that certain things be left untouched. I have quite a phobia about pelvic exams and things like that so I was wondering if it is possible for a person to request that there privates not be touched. Of course I know that I'll be gone by the time that it would happen but it still would be comforting to know that those wishes are fulfilled if possible. I know it's a crazy question! 😉
Thank you so much Kari! I learned quite a lot & find it definitely interesting! You have a good way of explaining things & seem to be a compassionate person. Thank you for all you do.🙏
Very interesting. This video came up in my recommendations. I had no idea that so much went into embalming and getting the body ready. Thank you for what you do.
I wish all morticians would be like you. A caring loving attitude toward the deceased person is what the family wants, someone who does not look at them as just a body to embalm. Thank you for your videos, they have helped me tremendously!! Some people are afraid of dead people, like I used to be but these help a person to understand better, what has to be done for their loved one.

You are very interesting to listen to and would be an amazing teacher. Thank you for sharing a great video.
Having a few friends in the “industry” spanning a few generations, each one has shown me different equipment used throughout the decades. I’ve seen the porcelain table, and other things. Glad they were willing to show me. Takes a special person to do what embalmers and funeral directors do!
Wow!! This is the first time I'm hearing all that goes into this process. When you don't know you think the process is simple. Thank you so much, you whole presence in this video made me feel comfortable with an uncomfortable subject.
Wow, so informative. I really had no idea how much work is required. Seems like only a high level of respect for the deceased and their families can enable one to do this work successfully.
This is very interesting. I’ve always wondered what went on past the double doors in a funeral home that are marked Private or Authorized Personnel Only.

Excellent presentation on the embalming process. I was fortunate to be able to shadow a funeral director for a day about 8 years ago. The day ended with the embalming of a woman in her late 90’s. She had been ill for a long time and the pain showed. Her teeth were all over the place. By the time the embalmer had finished, this woman had a nice smile, good color, and generally a presentation that any family or friends would like to remember. My overriding impression that day was that the embalmer may be the very last loving touch that a person receives. Your video showed that quality of a last loving touch. You were informative yet sensitive. Thank you.

Thank you for all you do as well!
It's about the money they rake in. They don't help those who can't pay.

Some funeral directors are more talented than others. A good presentation is a comfort to the family.Thank you for a really down to earth, intelligent & compassionate presentation.
Yes it is! THanks
I love the knowledge that you gave us.I lost my 20 year old son and this was informative to me. Thank you.You seem to be so respectful of the deceased

This is probably the most honest and compassionate presentation about what a funeral director does.
A funeral directors job description is very simple. 1 - prepare the stiff to be burned to a crisp, popped into a box and given to the family. Or, 2 - prepare the stiff to be buried.
It's not rocket science.

Do they take organs out before embalming a body?
@@dbrown44115 no organs get removed during embalming. Embalming is where you drain fluids from the body and pump embalming fluid back into it through the circulatory system.

@@sunshine121561 Embalming is NEVER required! It is not a law. If the funeral home told you it is, they committed a crime.
Thank you.
