My mom added 1/4 cup broken walnuts with the raisins. Delicious. She said, 'We're not that poor anymore. We can afford some nuts.' Very rich dessert from very simple ingredients. Thank you for sharing this old-time staple.
I liked how simple this was (and tasty too!) Unfortunately Ive never been a nut guy but if I did walnuts would definitely add an extra level of taste for sure
My grandmother made a similar "poor man's pudding" but made the sauce (water, butter, brown sugar, a little vanilla) in a metal cake pan on top of the stove. The cake was thinner (a little thicker than pancake batter) and "drop dollops" of the batter into the syrup before baking. It was a staple dessert at our house.
It appears lots of people have similar stories I dont recall anything resembling this when I was growing up however my grandma did occasionally make a type of bread pudding
