It works in this context as well as the original song narrative where a girl gives herself excuses as to no end her life. That narrative could work for Jake as well but the way you portrayed it was great
i find this pretty accurate since from what i saw in the music freaks,but since i havent watched it all yet,i have noticed from what i have seen that jake appears to be helping every member of the club in each episode,and from knowledge from spoilers obviously,everyone he helped couldnt hear him out/help him,which goes with the song pretty well i believe,i could go into more depth but its 4 a.m id rather not.

And the shoe part is because in (I think) japan you take your shoes off at the roof before you jump to show it was sewerside and not a murder.
