Hi, I live in Pensacola, Florida USA. I have been watching videos of narrowboats for about three years. My wife & I came to the UK last November and rented a narrowboat from the Ashby Boat Company for 11 days. Julian Carlyle and Kevin were great, and took care of all our needs. We had a great vacation and are planing to buy narrowboat when we retire in a couple of years, The Ashby Canal was beautiful even in November and we had great weather too.
Hi Marvin. It's great to hear of your narrowboating experience and your future plans. I wish you well with these and meanwhile welcome you aboard my channel, hope you enjoy watching. Cheers Alan
Thank you. I spent many hours as a kid up and around Sutton Cheney wharf fishing. Back then there was only a gravel car and a footpath to the battle site. Always go back there for a walk around when I`m back in the UK.
Got stuck at Marston junction once whilst BW kindly pulled out a washing machine that some kind person had chosen to dump in the cut there. Then proceeded to get quite sunburnt despite wearing a hat and realised that the sun reflection on the water can burn you as much as direct sun. Happy days, lovely canal
boater bill - an interesting memory - it’s quite unbelievable what gets chucked in the canal. I was working on a CRT boat on the Coventry and we pulled out two very heavy reclining armchairs. I think they could only have been there a day or so, as no rust whatsoever on the mechanisms. Definitely need to take precautions in the sun these days. Cheers
Hi Lewis, that was a great trip, the weather was fantastic on the whole, a couple of layover days, one as it was raining hard and the other cos I wanted to. Cheers
@@MyNarrowboatVenture I suppose it might be hard for some. On our last trip a lady suggested taking a bus from Radford Bank to the centre of Stafford. We walked it easily. We love walking, it was about 2 miles each way. It's nice to walk when you have been stood at the tiller for a few hours.
I watched two of your videos back to back and enjoyed both of them. I am living in NZ at the moment, I believe I could be the furthest blogger to the UK, But I will be on the cut permanent very early 2020, Regards Johnin NZ
you prolly dont care at all but does anybody know of a way to log back into an instagram account?? I somehow lost my password. I would appreciate any assistance you can give me
@Wesley Alvin i really appreciate your reply. I found the site thru google and Im trying it out now. Takes a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Hi Roger. Believe it or not I am wearing shorts and have been doing for months now. The weather wasn’t too kind when I joined the Ashby but as you saw it did improve in the afternoon. As for T shirts, don’t wear them 😀. Cheers
Another great video Alan. Another 48 hours and we will be starting the trip to the ASHBY CANAL from Dunchurch Marina May I ask how long did it take you to walk to M Bosworth
Hi Dan - apart from the obvious visible cracking I also noted outward movement of the parapet walls on quite a few bridges on the Ashby. I’ve got a couple of thoughts about the cause of that. Cheers
Maybe wear a Hard Hat? ^-) Sad to see the disrepair, it all needs a birthday a bit of TLC. I enjoy watching your videos, interesting and pleasant to watch, thanks for posting them. Hope you're enjoying your journey and retirement. Good Luck!
I fully understand the lack of space on a narrowboat but I have often wondered why you couldn't find enough space for a bicycle. It seems like a bike and backpack (rucksack) would have been great to use for your provisions.
Hi Russ. Interesting you mention that, I don’t have space for a full size bike. I gave my last bike to a charity to refurbish and sell on. I’ve been toying with the idea of a folding bike possibly electric but cost is prohibitive. Still thinking about it.
Hi Susan. Initial thoughts on N Oxford same as you, it was difficult to moor up and not overly picturesque. It was though very grey when I was on it and I think I felt better about it on my return when the sun was out. That said I still prefer the S Oxford.
Yes we preferred the south Oxford but we won’t be doing it again, we’re on the Staffs and Worcester canal now at Penkridge and heading to The Shropshire Union
On my RYA course I was told to sound horn for 4 seconds when approaching bends etc in case there are other boats that’s you can’t see coming towards you. Does this not actually happen in the real world?
Hi, Alan,me and the wife was wondering - what's happened to your wife ?. We've seen her in earlier Vlogs and thought - surely you should be enjoying this journey together...
@@MyNarrowboatVenture sorry to hear that Alan. But never mind your vlog s always put a smile our faces... it's the smile you have ... it reminds my wife of my smile...lol...
That’s such a useful video for me-the Ashby Canal is shortly to be my new home! 😊❤
I’m glad you found it of interest and what a lovely place to make home 🤠❤️

Respect for clearing out the toilet

I'm glad you have some fond memories to recall your time in the area. Cheers

Yep it does look a beautiful canal 👏❤️😁xx
The Ashby is also on my bucket list, I will be going up there one day

Lovely, and the nice weather certainly helps, everything looks so alive....
NICE VLOGS ENJOY WATCHING
Many thanks, glad you liked it.
We loved the Ashby when we did it in 2017. We also walked up to the Co-op in Market Bosworth.
sallyu1 great minds think alike. The boater I moored next to, suggested I should take a bus because of the steep hill!

I look forward to doing the Ashby canal!
Thanks for that. The Ashby canal is one that I want to do a Cabin Cruiser Adventure on it looks great and no locks. Cheers.
Cabin Cruiser Adventure Many thanks, it’s well worth making the trip, I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. Best regards. Alan
It is quite shallow in places so not one to hurry
Nice one ✌️

Silas House many thanks and welcome aboard. Good luck for 2020 with your own travels. Cheers
Great video Alan
The town seemed very busy as soon as you moved away from the canal.
Another enjoyable episode, thank you. Regards AJ

@Wesley Alvin It did the trick and I actually got access to my account again. I am so happy:D
Thank you so much you saved my account :D
@Garrett Raiden no problem :)
Where are your summer shorts and tea shirt ? 😸

Many thanks Brian. Hope you have an enjoyable trip. Took about 20 minutes. Uphill on the way there. It was about 3/4 mile. Cheers Alan
Ah, the luck of the bridge on a bend. Again. 😂
Bridge No1 looks cracked top to toe both sides of the arch. Hoping the Centre won't drop one day, I guess they're inspected. Glue required maybe! ^-)
No10 looks even worse.

Thanks very much Dan, that’s very kind of you. It’s nice to be retired but I still keep myself busy both on and off the boat. Best regards Alan

Hi Alan you mentioned the Oxford canal, we went on the Oxford in June but wasn’t impressed how did you find it

ipb1966 - I use my horn but it’s rare I hear a horn. So yes the horn is used but everyone’s judgement, as to when to use it is different. Cheers
Hi, Alan,me and the wife was wondering - what's happened to your wife ?. We've seen her in earlier Vlogs and thought - surely you should be enjoying this journey together...
Hi James. I’m not married and my friend and I split up early in the year, hence the reason I’m solo boating.
@@MyNarrowboatVenture sorry to hear that Alan. But never mind your vlog s always put a smile our faces... it's the smile you have ... it reminds my wife of my smile...lol...
Thanks James. I’m pleased to hear we’ve both got smiley faces 😁
