    Been LEO for almost 3 years. Now a school resource officer. I just happened to stumble onto your channel. So far I am really enjoying your videos. I always like seeing different ways of doing things. Helps me learn...trial and error. Keep up the good work on your channel.

      Yeah its been amazing. It's a great school, and the kids are greater. Obviously a few bad apples, but it happens. You really see a whole new side to law enforcement, and can make a difference with the kids early on.

    damn son, 3 extra mags ?
    im a police officer from germany and in my state we have just the mag in our gun.
    if something big goes down here, were basically fucked with just 13 rounds on us.

    • @freefieldtraining
      @freefieldtraining  8 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      +Gubby-SL Funny thing about that....it isn't very funny. That sucks. I have a friend who was carrying a 16rnd .40 on his way to k9 training and got in the middle of a gunfight on the highway. His gun went dry and he ended up taking a round in his leg. Could have been much worse. After that I stopped carrying subcompact guns to training and court.
      I understand the social issues with having police armed up in Europe but limiting a man to one pistol and one mag and then asking him to go into situations that will put him at risk of getting into a shootout seems really irresponsible. Three mag carriers are becoming increasingly popular in the US. If the look of the magazines bothers people I don't see why they wouldn't let you just keep a spare in a pocket. P99 mags aren't that big.

    • @freefieldtraining
      @freefieldtraining  8 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      +Gubby-SL I dare say in those circumstances I might just have a mag in my pocket and ask forgiveness after I made it through the fight.

    • @Gubby-SL
      @Gubby-SL 8 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      i'm just going to wait until i get my life employment (means that they can't fire me unless i get a prison sentence over 1 year, which is pretty hard in germany anyway) and then i'm going to put some spare mags in my bag pack
      i mean we're not even allowed to carry tasers
      complete bullshit

    Talking about lack of belt real estate, I did gear sales for a while and one of my favorite customers was this tiny little pixie of a woman. She was mid-40's or so, really slender, but hard as a rock. Sergeant-major in the air force and retired, then went in full time as a police officer. She was in the store on the regular because she was just so tiny that her gear and to be special ordered. I was utterly shocked when we get the PO to get her a thigh holster. That department was VERY static when it came to things like that and very strict on what you could put on the belt, but her waist was so slender that it was just impossible to put all the kit on it. They let her wear that thigh holster (safariland, same rig they bought for SWAT) and it sorted out all her belt issues.
    Still have no idea how someone so slender could be so strong, but I would've been perfectly happy to have her respond in a bad situation, tiny or not.

      BulvaiHammersson external carriers solve a lot of those problems . Here on the west coast external carriers are widely used . Only thing I really carry on my belt is my drop leg , cell holder , cuff , silent key . Everything else goes on the external . Externals really help in the heat to .

    As i see that you have 3 spare magazines attached to your belt i need to tell you how my country thinks about spare magazines. I am from Germany and right now, there is a big discussion about whether or not our federal police service officers should carry a 2nd magazine. And by that i dont mean a 2nd spare noooooo, they are discussing for real if a officer should have more magazines than the one allready in his sidearm.... Ridiculous, isnt it?!

    • @freefieldtraining
      @freefieldtraining  8 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      +Hans Hansen I'll say this about spare mags. A friend of mine was in a training class one day. On his way home in a marked car he ended up in the right place at the right time and caught up with a group of bank robbers who all happened to be in the same car.
      Long story short, he didn't have any extra ammo and ended up hiding behind his car with his 16+1 round gun at slide lock. Luckily more cops showed up.
      Lots of guys around here started carrying a little more ammo after that.
      A nearby agency also had a cop who let off over forty rounds, expending three full magazines, when he was pinned down be an offender in a traffic stop. He ended up, thankfully, being saved by other responding officers who entered the fight and brought him a long gun.
      Patrolmen don't regularly go around shooting hostage takers or entering active shooting environments, but when those situations do happen 99.9% of the time it is a patrolmen who settles it long before the "pros" get there.
      I don't know about you but if the bank I was in got robbed or my family member was held hostage I'd want the patrolmen on the street to have the tools and knowledge to settle the issue up front instead of being forced to wait hours for a specialist unit, adding time for the bad guy hurt people.

    • @medaphoar1337
      @medaphoar1337 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      free field training you are completely right but here in Germany bureaucracy is a bit** and if politicians decide that you are not allowed to carry spares, you are stuck with this order :-(
      Our officers would like to carry at least 1 to 2 spare magazines, but they cant, cause they get in serious trouble if they act against orders

    • @freefieldtraining
      @freefieldtraining  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Hans Hansen yeah, it is like that everywhere. Nothing you can do about it except talk sence to people and point out instances where it has caused problems.

    • @Ednet34

      yeah..the problem is, here in Germany, so many people are against guns.
      Did you know, that here in Germany the police is killing so many people in a year like in New York City cops are killing crooks per day?
      The problem is, that many illegal guns are in germany, but everyone is talking about forbidding guns for legal owners who have to do safety checks, and have so many restrictions.
      they even wanna forbid semi-auto guns now.

However, I work in healthcare LE and due the hospital administration our regulations are much more stringent and explicit... nothing goes on the external carrier. free field training Is that G35 issued or your own? If the latter, why did you choose that one over, say, the 22 or 23 (my,choice)?

    • @freefieldtraining
      @freefieldtraining  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Paul Bardal it is my own. I prefer the 35 due to the longer sight radius, longer point shooting top surface, and better stock trigger. I prefer to keep my duty pistol as stock as possible. It is also the same overall length and weight as my g22 that I used previously with the same light mounted. I get something for nothing with the g35. Plus, who couldn't use an extra inch?

    As an old guy who retired in ‘97 after 30 years and am blown away by the amount of gear cops carry around daily. I know I’m dating myself but my duty belt had a revolver (later the Glock .40), 12 extra rounds in dump pouches, one set of cuffs and a baton. Early portable radios were so heavy that no one wanted to put it on the duty belt. I’m guessing lots of young cops will have back and hip problems after years of carrying all this stuff around.

    quick question, i see most police, corrections and security run their taser in a cross draw fashion. is that just because there's a lack of left handed taser holsters or is running them cross draw for the strong hand better than weak hand? (i personally find leaving the strong hand available for lethal, baton, etc a better option. and if a cross draw is what was needed, i would probably put it on my vest). thanks

    • @freefieldtraining
      @freefieldtraining  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +MrSimon117 The idea is to use o lying one weapon at a time so as to not become confused in the heat of the moment as to which one you are using or cause a sympathetic nervous reaction, squeezing two triggers at once. To avoid this we use diffrent holsters, at a different location, and draw only one weapon at a time. Almost everywhere has policy about where, what, and how items can be placed on the uniform and often the taser and firearm are spelled out exactly.

    I work in as a Armed security guard. what is a good concealed vest to buy? Because I was told I can't wear one on top of my uniform because I work in a hospital.

    • @freefieldtraining
      @freefieldtraining  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +KingDes2011 That is going to depend on your body shape and uniform. As a general rule the lower the protection level and higher the price the easier the concealable vest will be to conceal and the more comfortable it will be regardless of brand.
      To come up with a good solution you should hit a local police supply house while wearing your uniform and duty belt and have them fit you and try out some of the example vests they have. Most will work with you if you explain your circumstances and that you have to buy it personally. Expect to spend at least $600 for a vest that conceals well. Possibly much more depending on your shape and uniform.

      +Emily Smith that's pretty much it. Setting up a duty belt is kind of a trial-and-error affair. They tell you at the Academy kind of where to put things so you won't die but there's lots of personalization that goes on.

    I have a question..why don't regular police carry their pistols in a leg holster? I have a police belt and to make more room on the belt I moved my 1911 to my leg and I can also draw quicker from the leg than what I can from the hip (also when I quick draw from the hip it gets snagged on the holster) I'm asking because I never see regular cops with the leg holsters it's always swat

    • @freefieldtraining
      @freefieldtraining  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Thatdualsportguy For many reasons. First, with a drop down or thigh holster the gun is less secure than on a standard hip mounted duty holster. Meaning that if somone tried to grab the gun that thigh holster would be easier to break and steal the whole thing off of.
      Second cops sit in the car for most of their day and thigh holsters have this tendency to shift around on most guys when sitting in the car. Which leads me to reason the third....
      Because they shift around more easily the holster is slower to draw from in actual use because the gun is never in EXACTLY the same place for most users. Speaking of drawing...
      Reason the fourth. Cops are taught how to properly draw, retain, and holster the gun from the hip retraining is expensive both in money and in time. Speaking of holstering...
      Reason the fifth. Drawing the gun is half the battle. As I mentioned in this here video:
      th-cam.com/video/6SFBqQTdfGw/w-d-xo.html
      Contrary to what many military and competitive firearms instructors teach, there is a very real need on the street to be able to put the gun back in the holster and apply retention quickly. This is again easier to accomplish with a standard hip holster because it is always in the same place and it is further inside the range of regular motion for most people where as a thigh holster is at the very limits of most people s range of motion.
      I used a thigh holster for about two months on swat then canned it. Never again. The only good reason to use a thigh holster is to keep it clear of other gear like repelling equipment, scuba, parachutes, gas masks, med kits, and the like. Interestingly, the most common reason given for using the thigh holster (that it clears heavy body armor) hasn't been true for a couple decades because of better armor fitting, but still exists and is largely believed because most people never use a full on turtle suit for anything and if they do it is not properly sized.

    • @Thatdualsportguy
      @Thatdualsportguy 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well after breaking it down like that I see how it could be a problem..so far the most I've done with my gear is play airsoft (yes I know it's childish for a 21 year old) and now that you break that down I've noticed that when I move the holster does flop around even when it's strapped so tight it kinda hurts my leg though my gear is real I use a 30 pound vest (plate carrier with steel plates front and rear) and I've used both a cross draw holster and the leg holster with it for that vest my leg holster is my friend and I have a light non plate carrier vest which works well with the cross draw...not trying to sound cool or anything I'm just saying what I've noticed with my gear another thing with my leg holster is when I put my real 1911 in it when I went shooting it actually managed to slip out somehow...anyway I've thought about law enforcement and I was curious so I guess I'll start getting used to having my pistol on a belt thanks for the descriptive breakdown

      +Mistr Fusion I wore out the safety plunger and some of the contact points of the lock work of my g22. I replaced all the internal components but felt it was safer to get a new gun for duty. As long as I was buying a new gun I figured I would upgrade. The gen 3 g35 came with a better trigger and an inch more sight radius/barrel length. As a bonus most of my off duty holsters and magazines for the g22 work with the g35 and the ammo was the same. Seemed like a natural switch to make.

      +Marjah Marine I'm actually not required to use 40 and my department dosen't issue guns at all. What they do issue is ammo and the time I started we were using non bonded Remington golden sabre. (Pretty state of the art at the time in their defense) I had a choice between 9, 40, or 45 in a Glock, sig, Beretta, or hk. The 147 gr 9mm didn't work all to well. 45 had good performance but the guns at the time that took 45 were either too large for my hands or 8 round capacity. So, I got a 40 that got as much velocity as possible. The 180 gr golden sabre worked reasonably well and who couldn't use an extra inch? I've been quite pleased with the gun/ammo combo and at this point there is just no good reason to change. I've got about 30 G22/35 mags, four guns that take them, and several thousand rounds on hand. The pd provides all the training ammo I need. Even though a g34 with our new Winchester ranger 9mm would probably work just as well I'm not convinced it would work better.

      Yeah I completely heard what you had said wrong now that I replay the video. I guess I was hearing what I wanted to hear, haha. The very best test ever done on pistol ammo was the one Lucky Gunner did. It's posted on their website. See how your ammo stacks up...

      +Marjah Marine yeah, I've seen it, great testing for CCW pistols. He is running it all through short barrel pistols though. We are talking duty weapons. Still, non bonded 147gr 9mm tends to work like crap no matter what you put it in. I'll take any advantage I can get.

    • @freefieldtraining
      @freefieldtraining  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Justin Peppers I believe it is a 21". I carry one chain and one hinge because, while there is overlap, they are for two different purposes. Hinge cuffs are as a reserve, for fighting, and high risk transports. Chain cuffs are for more "routine" calls. They are more comfortable for the detainee which leads to more good will when we need more voulentarily compliance in booking. Chain cuffs are also easier on the elderly, which can save significant time on hospital transports.

    No OC spray (pepper spray)? I don't like the handcuff pouches you need to open the pouch.. I just use the ones that show the cuffs and all you do is pull on them in order to take them out. Get some Fenix flashlights, they have about 1000 lumens and are extremely good. Easy to use them and have a gun out, in order to clear a house, etc.

    Hi, european LEO here. Nice video really.
    Here things are quite different i think... I won't even carry a back up gun while on duty (and i do have a G26 to carry off duty or while on plain clothing), only a Beretta 92fs with an extra mag. Might be we do never work alone like i sometimes see american cops doing (crazy stuff!) but however...
    No tasers here also, so the rest of my belt is for: radio, batton, gloves, folding knife, cuffs and led flashlight. In my bag: extra cuffs, full waterproof clothing, high visibility jacket, writing stuff... In car: big flashlights, rubber battons, kevlar heavy vests, 5.56 assault rifle (1 or 2...) , traffic signals, defensive sprays...

    Does it matter what caliber you use on duty as a cop? I prefer the FN five seven which shots a odd little round

    • @freefieldtraining
      @freefieldtraining  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Travis L most agencies have rules governing what officers can and cannot use. Those that don't are small and usually are ruled by the opinion of the chief as to what is prudent on a case by case basis.
      The only agency I know of that is using 5.7 for anything is the US secret service. Even then, it is my understanding that they only use it in the p90's and don't have any five7 pistols.
      I can only think of a few very limited circumstances in which I would want an fn five7 pistol for Police work and none are very likely circumstances at all. I am also completely turned off to the five7 pistol as a sidearm due to it's odd safety.
      Most places that don't issue duty pistols allow 9, 40, or 45 in a full size pistol with a 3" or longer barrel made by a reputable company. A very few places use .357 Sig.
      The fnfive7 used to be a moderately popular off duty price because back in the day it was about the only way to get that kind of capacity into a portable package. Wiith modern pistols that have 20 round 9mm magazines there is little reason to use the 5.7 anymore even for that purpose.
      I'm glad you like it, (God knows I have som e wacky stuff that I enjoy shooting) but there is little chance you would find a police or security company inside the US that would allow you to use a five7 as a duty weapon. I would have serious reservations about working for one that did.

      +Dominick Brown We don't use the x2 , though I have played with one. I wish we had the second shot ability and I love the drive stun without having to pull the cartridges off.
      The x 26 and x26p differ in more subtle ways. The x26p is more solid state and so a bit more reliable after non use for a while. The x26 has a more positive safety. They both have essentially the same manual of arms though.

    Vet here loving your channel about the minutia of being a police officer. What is the calendar for?

    • @freefieldtraining
      @freefieldtraining  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +hellhammerCCCP to keep track of shifts, time off, court, training, ect. For example I work four days on two days off rotating backwards every calendar month with at least four court dates and one training day a month. That is way more than you can keep in your head and is quite challenging to even keep in a phone.

At this moment it is still working on TETRA standards it will switch to a DMR setup next year cause of the bigger capacity. So the system you use, is it still analoge?

I have an idea for a video series you might find interesting: tell stories of scary calls you've been on share how you made it through the ordeal what you would have done differently if given the chance to and advice for fellow LEOS if they find themselves in a similar situation, it would give good advice to less experienced guys, allow the older guys a good word of advice and give citizens a whole new appreciation for what law enforcement deals with.
