    Just go clarify: Marlinspikes are always metal. If it’s wood, it’s called a “fid” (for splicing rope and making holes in canvas). It is called a marlinspike because of it’s great ability to tighten a thin rope with tar in the center called “marlin” using the marlinspike hitch. It’s also impossible to splice metal wire without one. Any tallshipsailor will have a dedicated spike on their belt at all times. Great video!

    The Marlin Spike on my Boatsman has an eyelet that enables me to easily pass paracord through other knots. This is useful when I am enlarging my paracord cargo nets.
    It also enabled me to pass a length of paracord through a tennis ball when I made a tetherball type toy for my dog.

    My dad was a paratrooper in the British army and they were issued with knife / can opener / marlin spike tool which I still have. Doesn't have the shackle key but it's similar to the above and it's where the design first originated.

      NICE! Legacy tools like that are the best! I have been trolling flea markets and second hand shops here looking for an original without paying an arm and leg. Unfortunately no luck so far. have a great day.

    Great video 👍🏼👍🏼
    About three years ago a friend gave me the knife you’re using in this video (Maxam Sailor’s Tool).
    after three or four days, I couldn’t believe I had gone my whole life without a marlin spike!
    I use it almost every day.
    I’ve been making eye-splices, and diamond knots for decades. Using this thing is like cheating!
    It’s one of the most handy tools I have.

    A nail will work in a pinch. A nail will help with a shackle too. But this is one handy tool! I want one.

      Yes a nail will work in a pinch, if you're carrying a nail. Years ago a guy I knew used to whittle a Marlin spike out of hardwood. So there's lots of options but you know a pre-made one like this on a multi-tool it's just outstanding. Thanks for the comments and views!

    With respect Charles you are completely missing the point of the can opener feature. It is a LARGE size because within armed-services and other mass-people events out in the field people are not catering with 14 oz (400 gram) domestic cans of food you but at Walmart - but 5lb 4oz (2.55Kg) catering size cans - which will be easier to open using a larger can-opener.

    Why was it named a ''marlin" spike? Originally used to filet marlins or something?

    • @charlesartificer2158
      @charlesartificer2158  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ok, not a navy guy here but what I was told over 30 years ago was that they had line on old sailing ships called marlin line. The spike was used to loosen it, so it got the name marlin spike. Not sure if that's correct, never been on a sailing ship in my life. I just know the tool from rope work and climbing. Thanks for the comment.
