Actually, didn’t Aerith call him an “child,” back when they encountered each other in Remake? That may mean that this voice switch has been intended from the beginning of these remastered games.

hmmm althought the same conversation happens in the original game. Red/Nanaki claiming he is 48 years old and Bugenhagen saying that that's just doggy years but in human terms he is a teenager.

Hearing his real voice makes me remember when in the original he was becoming stress and scared during the meeting with the party at golden saucer hotel, Tifa scolding him when he was frightened something might happen to him from Hojo’s experiments.

Max Mittleman went from sounding serious into sounding like Ryuji from Persona 5, Atsushi from Bungou Stray Dogs and Kousei from Your Lie in April.
This was a thing in the original Japanese version. He went from using mature words, to speaking like a countryside kid when they reach Cosmo Canyon.
Also Red starts stumbling on what words he should use talking to Cloud at the start of Cosmo Canyon. Something mostly lost in translation.

Other differences include Cloud speaking very polite when under Sephiroths influence, however he still uses his normal pronoun Ore, the rude version of saying I. Usually it would just be his angst but while being controlled, it's like he's putting himself down. Spoilers but you can literally hear him having a more polite tone after grabbing the black materia off from Aerith in this game.
Other times he's being polite is he echos one of the staffs politeness at the Gold Saucer which is actually a bit of a dickhead thing to do, and he gradually gets more polite with the highwind pilot till it gets ridiculous, going form いく to 行ってくれたまえ which I have never heard irl .
Also Cloud and Tifa don't say Nandemonai for nevermind they said Doudemonai, Aerith notices this when she meets Cloud, but then also subtlety notices Tifa saying it.
It's not a shit take, it's the literal original game 🙄
@@TheDapperDragon Is there a point to lying? You can look up the Japanese script and see that Red switches to using oira. Or at least you could if you knew any Japanese and weren't trying to pretend you know the Japanese version.

I don't necessarily PREFER his real voice, but I like it and think it's cute.
I like both voices and think they both fit different sides of him.

When I played remake I had a whacky theory that Red was putting on a voice due to the little growls he did.

Just in case you're not, from Cait Sith's pleased reaction here you can assume he's somehow involved with replacing their real photos with these fake ones. Earlier in the game these posters had real photos on them. Still only an assumption tho, as I don't know the full story yet

@@terry85mar How is this butchering. It's like that in the original Japanese version of FFVII as well. Red speaks in an entirely different and more youthful way. The translator didn't pick up on this back then and there's a shitload of things wrong with FFVII's original translation on PSX.

Max Mittelman makes this character very interesting! 😊 Though it was funny that he went from having a deep voice to Ryuji from Persona 5, it just adds so much character to Red XIII (Nanaki) in this game! 😅

playing the OG game, my memory was that he was an old guy, don't recall the just playing an act
It's not something well known unless you went out of your way reading some trivia and old interviews from back then,but pretty much him faking the old mature act was something that was very visible in the OG in the native japanese language, by using different words and expression is much easier for them showing the difference between someone mature and a youngster, but when the translation was brought to other languages..some problem happened,let's say that in english a lot of the context of this was lost almost entirely, the devs even apologized in an interview for the not very accurate result of the translation, reason why some people never knew he pretended to be mature during the first part of the game.
Did not helped that in later apperance of Nanaki he had little screen time like in Dirge of Cerberus and Advent Children,where it wasn't exactly easy to fix this big translation mess that happened from Japanese to other languages,so rather then try to explain it in such short cameo they kept the mature acting,which up to now is what a majority of people that never learned of this translation story always perceived him to be.
Here in the remake they took the chance to address the issue of the past and fixing it, by retconing correctly especially those not aware of it,how Nanaki story/personality was originally made to be all over and not just on the japanese side.
Shout out to Barret for lightening the mood by making fun of the way Yuffie, Cait Sith and Red XIII talk throughout the game lol

It’s actually max mittelman voice actor for young luxu in union cross back cover. He’s also Meruem from Hunter x Hunter, Ryuji sakamoto from shin Megami tensei, king from the seven deadly sins, and the almighty Arattaki Itto from Genshin Impact
Which is funnier to me since Red looks & plays like a updated/altered version of Pride Lands Sora from KH2.

Somewhat, yes, but honestly, some of it is a combination of a stylistic choice, and that a lot of people have never actually stopped and looked at what wolves actually look like in their summer coat.
Media basically ALWAYS used wolves in their lush winter coat because it just looks so much more like what people think of as a wolf, to the point that many folks see wolves in their light summer coat or in shed and assume they're emaciated or diseased.
Nanaki is definitely way to lean and angular for that to be healty and renders for the OG FF7 can't tell you as much about the original intention, but if you go a few years later to FF8, you start to see leonine beasts like the Moombas with rather verbose joints, like ankles, knees and knuckle analogs.
I'd call it a 50/50 stylistic choice to in-character malnourishment.

I suspect there's a design lineage connecting Red XIII, Moombas, and proto-Sora with his lion tail.

It is super jarring to hear him go from the cool voice to this.
But when you put together that not only is it the exact same voice actor (Max Mittelman, who is awesome), that it is a reference to the japanese version of the original FF7, and that it is a coming of age story for Red XIII's character arc, it fixes up a lot of it. Just remember, both the deep and teenage voices are both by the guy said For Real!? about 50+ times.
