Aldous Huxley Describes the Dancing Shiva Image

  • The great writer Aldous Huxley (Brave New World, The Perennial Philosophy, The Doors of Perception, Island) describes the "Dancing Shiva" image (Nataraj) of the Hindu tradition and its immense significance and comprehensiveness. This is from an interview with Mr. Huxley which was done in 1961 in London and was recorded and distributed under the title "Speaking Personally". Though now out of print, this audio collection can occasionally be found at Amazon.com & Ebay, and for all I know, you might be able to find some or all of it on TH-cam.
The Dancing Shiva image shown here is the one on permanent display at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, the huge particle accelerator/collider that recently discovered the Higgs Boson, a fundamental breakthrough in physics.
Thank you for listening. And to the greatest extent possible each moment, may all sentient beings find true happiness! Om Namah Shivaya, Om Shanti Shanti Shanti.

I am not religious but since childhood this image of Nataraja has always had a hold on me. Have no freaking idea why!!! It's at a rudimentary level the most aesthetic and fluidic representation generated out of metal.

The symbol of Nataraj has a meaning. It tries to say that the dancer and the dance are not two things . So long as the dancer is there the dance is also there. It tries to say that the creator and its creation are not two things . They are one. So one should not try to separate them . when the creator and the creation are one, a different term can be given, that is creativity. So GOD is creativity. Dance is the creation, and the dancer is the creator. Hence the word creativity.

Thanks. My understanding is that creation is the movement of the Self. Destruction is the absence of that movement. Siva symbolise both creation and destruction. The Self is Siva, the movement id Shakti or motive power. Their union is creation, a concept brought closer to home by the depiction of the Lingam (phallus) and Yoni (womb) in the Siva Lingam statues. This shows the male, female duality in creation. This idea again finds expression in the Ardhanarishvara - half male (Siva), half female (Shakti) split down the middle - half bronze, half brass statues. I think this depiction while asserting the duality in creation goes beyond to show that both Shakti and Siva are one not separate - the position of Advaita.

    • @ioanateo1359
      @ioanateo1359 8 ปีที่แล้ว +36

+Bharat Jobanputra it implies that we can be one with Shiva in the heart, and take part in the cosmic dance, since the dancer and the dance (creation) are one. Shiva also destroys ignorance and evil, dancing joyfully in defiance to the oppresive powers in the world. So the statue of him crushing the dwarf (ego) could also mean that he destroys evil and its manifestations, in order to purify the universe and start anew (creation). So its like a cosmic cycle, or Yuga. Now we're in the Kali Yuga, so Shiva's dance is destructive (divine destruction, not the destructivity of the evil ones). Shiva is actually a very complex and multifaceted symbol

Hinduism is a deeply symbolic set of philosophies. Take this, for instance:
"In our legends it is said that the goddess Ganga’s descent from the heavens would have split the earth had Lord Shiva not tamed her torrent by tying it into his ash-smeared locks. To hear this story is to see the river in a certain way: as a heavenly braid, for instance, an immense rope of water, unfurling through a wide and thirsty plain. That there is a further twist to the tale becomes apparent only in the final stages of the river’s journey-and this part of the story always comes as a surprise, because it is never told and thus never imagined. It is this: there is a point at which the braid comes undone; where Lord Shiva’s matted hair is washed apart into a vast, knotted tangle. Once past that point the river throws off its bindings and separates into hundreds, maybe thousands, of tangled strands."
    - Excerpt from The Hungry Tide by Amitav Ghosh on the Sunderbans Delta.

It makes a joke out of the religion just like christian churches and institutions have been perverted by evil people and the media has demonized christianity. Doesn't mean christianity is evil and doesn't mean hinduism is evil.
      You are being decieved.
The suspicious people of CERN are "playing god" (associating with shiva) and misinterpret (or mock) hinduism. They are deluded materialist atheists and/or luciferianists. So yes. Luciferians may be behind the choice of this imagery. I can agree on that. But a satanist could also use christian imagery in order to give jesus a bad name.
      Remember...
"You will know them by the fruits of their labor"
      And

The ego, along with the world, isn't a mistake committed by Brahman. It's a product of Desire, which is the generator of the Leela. It cannot and should NOT be destroyed! What is needed is its attenuation.
Neither expect the cessation of Dukkha or suffering. It is the price we must forever pay for our awareness in this relative world. I am always amazed when I read comments about the placement of the Shiva statue at CERN, as if that was some demonic homage. So obvious is its formal connection to the site's geometry: CERN is a very large ring, and this dancing Shiva is inscribed within a bounding circle. Why is that so difficult to get? That is not its only symbolic reference but clearly it is a part of its relevance. There is a far richer symbolic connection in relation to that specific placement of the Shiva, but not many people are knowledgeable with Hindu deities, the concept of archetypes, materiality and non-materiality etc.

My understanding of the nataraja symbol (everytime I see it) is that the eternal dance of nataraja represnting the eternal cosmic dance in the macroscopic scale of stellar objects to the microscopic scale of atomic particles. Not simply a dance but such a graceful, artistic periodic motions. Just imagine in a single picture, the harmonic movement of sub atomic particles across atoms, atoms making objects, objects moving on planets, satellites across planets, planets across stars, stars in galaxy, galaxies in space. And not for a finite period of time but for eternity and thus the gigantic amount of energy this universe possess And a tiny human mind (which seems an invisible point in the scale of space and universe) contemplating this grandeur. And all this makes me adore and bow before the idol not by submission but by pure admiration. There are two emotions of nataraja's dance as I know. The aananda tandava which is a dance of joy which signifies motion and life on universe and the rudra tandava (the angry, violent dance) which represents destruction of universe in form of explosions and collisions. In one line, the idol explaining all the science of motion, energy, creation, destruction. How spirituality melds and merges with science. Can never stop admiring and reverring it

Because the science of quantum physics demonstrates and proves that the world is, in fact, both: material and non-material. Subatomic particles cannot be seen, they can only be experienced. Hadron Collider studies and documents traces left behind by accelerated particles. No one can see the actual particles, the properties can be described. It's pretty much what the Dancing Shiva depicts: the Universe and we are made of the same stuff - energy particles which are in constant motion. This is why the statue is placed where it is. For a very good reason. Indian mythology and European science meet here and understand one another. The Collider scientifically confirms that the Indian understanding of the nature of the Universe as depicted by Dancing Shiva is correct.

The symbolism in Nataraja, the Cosmic Dancer, explains the basis of all. The realms of Energy and that of the Mind are to be experienced for realising the Truth. Nothing but the combination of both, the Consciousness is the reason for everything. Perhaps Modern Physics is still trying to master the realm of Energy. The dancing Shiva reminds the scientists of CERN and elsewhere that there is so much work remaining and they need to be alert and attentive. They can't rest till the goal is reached.
      The relevant mantra is,
      "Uthishtata, Jagrata, Prapyavara Nobodhata".

That does it!!! I'm now going to have to read "The Doors of Perception" which is where Jim Morrison got the name "The Doors". I have read "Brave New World" with essays. There's a good reason why It is considered classical literature and is often required reading in college. And it's not necessarily because of the sex and or orgies (Ford have mercy!). But I'm now getting a real feel for who Huxley was. Thanks for posting this.

Whatever is his explanation, Shiva is mysterious. As mysterious as this Universe. Still today we know only one street of this universe. We are yet to explore the whole town, whole country, planet and many more such Universes. All this is not an accident and someone is leading us to him. Is he Shiva? No! there perhaps all religions will merge at one common understanding. I predict modern religions will become unattractive to humankind in next 50-100 years. Trust me on this. Quest for truth will still be there as well as differences between humankind.
