you all probably dont care at all but does anybody know of a way to log back into an instagram account? I was dumb lost the login password. I would love any tricks you can give me!
@Spencer Alfredo i really appreciate your reply. I found the site thru google and I'm in the hacking process atm. I see it takes quite some time so I will reply here later with my results.
Dont' drink weissbier from the bottle. It is meant to be drunk from a special glass called Weissbierglas. Btw I'm bavarian and yes you're right about the pronounciation.
@@nickcarverphoto Your pronunciation is pretty good but the waiters weren't that wrong! An explanation of the need for a special glass: The Weißbierglas or Weizenglas as it is called in German has a special shape, that helps the beer staying fresh for a longer time and avoids accidents with drinking. It is possible that the carbon dioxide in the beer makes it froth in your mouth, if you are not careful, so that the beer sprays out of your nose while drinking from the bottle :-D
Most of us also pronounce the "s" in "stephaner" like the sh in "shock" rather than the st in "stand". Lots of Americans doesn't get this quite right - you do :) I really love your sense of humour besides, not only here but in a lot of your videos. Your work is really interesting and especially the printing episodes really helped me!
Yeah, but you have to work on your "Hefe Weizenbier/Weissbier/Weißbier". Slow down the first 'e' of Hefe a little bit and the 'z' should sound more like an american 'ts'.
I’m not sure which I’m most impressed with, the review of the beer or the one on the tripod. Great to see a review that isn't just a "I bought it because it's the best" full stop. You broke it down into the parts and what each part brings to your work and why you chose it. Very informative indeed. Now, that’s the beer out of the way, about your review on the tripod...
Bro, I bought that beer for my sister's bday and of course they love it. I don't drink at all. I tasted beer and never liked the taste, but when I took a sip of this German beer, I knew right away what an excellent beer taste like. It leaves your with this perfect after taste in your mouth than I would have never expected. Thx again.
Having watched this 2 or 3 times in the past it helped me decide time to stump up for Tripod Kong so I now have the tripod and Ball Head, no regrets Nick none at all.
At first I was like "Eh! Tripod ? $1800 nonetheless ! Not my thing." But then I thought "Well, it's Nick (and there's beer) so I'll give it a try." Guess what ? Now I want to drink to that beer and buy that INSANELY expensive tripod ! Awesome video. This series is the best!
I built my tripod on the same Gitzo legs. I added a Manfrotto MVH-500AH fluid head instead of a ball head. I liked ball heads until I tried the fluid head. What an improvement in movement it makes. I now don't have to worry about a heavy camera with telephoto lens flopping forward if I accidentally let it go before locking it down. it also works quite well when doing multiple exposure panoramic images with my Nikon D850.
Prost from Germany! Another refreshing video of yours. Great job done, very entertaining as always. And yes you got the pronounciation very very close. And yes Gitzo & RRS is a great combo. I enjoy it everytime I put my Linhof on it. 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
Nick, you're correct about the Gitzos being very maintainable. After maybe 10 years (or slightly less), I finally replaced the plastic leg locks on my GT 2540. This thing has been in fresh water, salt water, sand storms, and everything else nature can throw at it and keeps on ticking. I did go larger for my Shen Hao 617 and went with an RRS TVC-33 with a BH55 head...so far, so good. Yeah, you pay for it, but quality isn't cheap.
I have the 5 series 6 section, which is rock solid in fast water or surf and it extends to 2.8 mtrs high. It's an awesome tripod and easy to strip and clean. I also have the bowl levelling head which makes it super quick to get level.
My wife speaks German NIck and says you’re as right as you could possibly be ;-) I am on the hunt for Weihenstephaner beer. Going to Tip Top meats in Carlsbad to see if I can find it, as German as you can get around here. Gitzo makes a life long tripod, mine is a bit shorter in the legs and the BH55 ballhead is a beast. Don’t ever see a need for anything else. Great video Nick, one of the very few that makes me laugh. How could a video review of a tripod be any better!!!
Bill McCarroll thanks, Bill! And thanks to your wife for the confirmation. Next time I'm rolling through Carlsbad I'll have to check out tip top meats.
Just started watching your videos... Love them! Btw I'm from Bavaria, Germany. Not far from where your beer's coming from! Keep up that BGWG! Awesome man! Your pronunciation is nearly perfect btw.
. The next episode should focus on a fine champagne, and The RB67. I'm sure a few folks will be thinking about buying something bubbly for The New Year Celebration. And The RB is just an affordable, and magnificent piece of medium format machinery !
Great beer and one of my favorites, but such a nice beer like this deserves a glass. This was the beer that piqued my interest (and soon to be passion) in beer. I was in Germany in 1999. Decided to try a German beer (never cared for American beer at that time). WOW. It rocked my world. Started to seek out craft beer after that.
Loving this "behind the glass with a glass"series!!!! awesome tripod,,,,,but just a little out of my range.....BUT im looking for that beer Today!!!! Your awesome man, love these vids, top of my list!
Great video, a little out of my range, but totally agree with the right tools for the job. Also. Try their Kristall Weiss. I love it. Takes me back to my army days in Germany Prost!!!!
I live in the city where Weihenstephaner is produced. To be honest we don‘t even drink it that much. If you‘re looking for the best Weissbier, try getting a hold of Huber Weisses. Another tip for that type of beer is try drinking it out of a glass. The beverage contains sediment that falls to the bottom over time, to enjoy the whole drink it should be poured into a glass. Of course there is a specific technique to pour a Weissbier ( Its Germany ). I dont wish to criticize, only to spread some help from one beer connoisseur to another. Love the channel already, keep up the great work!
Here are some reccomendations from the area on beers. If anyone is able to get a hold of these I have to insist on picking these up: Augustiner Helles Tegernseer Helles Chiemseer Helles Huber Weißes Hacker Pschorr Radler (Shandy) Crew Republic Drunken Sailor (Modern Microbrew IPA)
Hey Nick. originally German/Austrian, but been in the US for quite a while. Also a large format shooter. Just to settle the debate on how to pronounce the beer and the brewery....if you say the following words in sequence you pretty much have the pronunciation correct: vie-hen-steph-fawn-ur. Prost!!!
If you pronounce each word separately and put equal emphasis on every vowel you are 90% there (in German you don’t string words and vowels together like in English or French, that is why it sounds so harsh) Then, to pronounce the adjective Weihenstephaner (meaning “of Weihenstephan”) you put the emphasis on the FAWN and eliminate the pause before the UR - so you would say: vie-hen-steph-FAWNur To pronounce the proper name Weihenstephan, you put the emphasis on STEPH and eliminate the pause before the FAWN - so it is: vie-hen-STEPHfawn Enjoy!!!
I'm not a professional photographer, so I have no need of a $1,000+ tripod, but I overstand pro's needing equipment that they can count on. Interestingly, I was on the B&H site a few weeks ago, and was surprised by the number of negative reviews RE: Gitzo tripods. According to what I read, Gitzo was recently bought by another company (I want to say Manfrotto, but I'm not sure), and that since then, their customer service has gone downhill significantly. I'm ALL for paying for quality, it just seems that so many things nowadays do not offer the quality and/or customer service that you'd expect, given their price point. Ironically, I have been very disappointed in some premium products I have owned (a car immediately comes to mind) and highly satisfied by some budget items I own. I like nice watches, and while I've never had a problem with any of them, I have a couple of 10+ year old Timex's that I cannot kill.
Derek Czar I haven't had to use gitzo customer service yet, but that's a shame to hear it's not very good. With so much more competition out there they should really work on that.
Nick, you rock. You are definitely more right than any of those serving the beer. Very enjoyable first few minutes. You should try “Paulaner” - sorry I’m half Bavarian!
You are very close. The first part "Weihensteph .." is super correct. You only have to pronounce the end like "fun". (no joke) phonetic: {Weihenstefun}. Prost and greetings from Germany!
Hi Nick, I enjoy watching your videos and just stumbled about this one. The Weihenstephaner Brewery is about 8 to 10 miles away from where I live and the "Hefe-Weissbier" is my alltime-favorite also. It's so interesting if an american describes one of the best german beers. I enjoyed watching it. AND don't care about your pronouncing, everyone should understand what you mean and want. I appreciate it, that you even tried it to pronounce it. So, greetings from near Freising, Germany. Keep it going, take care and all the best. Philipp
German is my second language and you are pronouncing it correctly. "W" in German is pronounced as a "V" in American English. I have a similar System 3 tripod, but not extra long. Guten tag!
I speak German. I can say it's definitely with the long "a" as the waiters mentioned. Additionaly, from you it sounds like "Wein" instead of "Weihen". So it's more "Wei"-"hen" where you here also the "h"
Another great video. Thanks for the insight! On the German pronunciation thing... A guy I went to high school with, a long time ago..when the Earth was green..., failed his HS German course. Even though, both of his parents immigrated to the US and German was the only language spoken in his household growing up. It seems that the German dialect (something like 20 of them) he had spoken since he first learned to speak, was a different dialect than what they were teaching in his HS class. Kind of like the "Spanish" that is taught in school today is more Mexican than Spanish. The languages are similar, but not entirely the same.
Well, you should taste it with the right glass - you will love that beer twice... Tripods: I couldn't find the right one for me so I build my own pro version from aluminium...not that hight like yours, but perfect for heavy equipment. As I saw first your beautyfull 6x17 Shenhao cam I saw it right on my tripod...😉 After very hard two weeks I decide not to go with a 4x5 or 8x10 camera. So my C220 is the winner 🤣 Great channel btw, your unique style inspires me doing more photos... 👍 All the best from Germany 🇩🇪
Definitely see the reasoning for your choice of tripod. As you point out it's a lifetime investment so over the years it will pay for itself. Curious that you have the RRS head (fantastic head which I own too) but not their tripod? Any reason why the Gitzo over RRS? BTW I love this concept of a talk over a whiskey or beer.
Michael Wellman thanks man! I think RRS didn't even have their own tripods yet when I got my gitzo. That's how old it is! Haha. But the RRS tripods do seem to be top shelf.
Nick if you ever visit Germany I would be pleased to show some of our beer gardens and my landscape places. There are some nice ones of both over here. Thank you for the efford with your videos, they inspired me after 15 digital years back to film.
The best beer I have ever had and you can't understand it unless you were there. Was the cold Raineer beer in the crummy after working hard all day on a hot summer day Logging. Cheap who gave a damn it was like drinking heaven. Take the caulk (pronounced Cork) boots off slip into the Romeo's and finally get to kick back.
I'm almost positive we sell that at work. I've never had it. Will certainly change that soon. I did recently try an Oktoberfest that was a collaboration between Sierra Nevada and Weihenstephaner that was pretty good.
..... So I stopped by Metropolitan Market today to do a bit of grocery shopping. Lo and behold - WEIHENSTEPHANER was stocked! I was soooo ready to judge Mr. Carver in the smarmiest, vilest most youtube trollist manner I could think of. But the beer tastes pretty good. Damn : - ( . Guess I'll keep watching.. : - ) His photography tips aren't bad either, BTW.
And I thought I was doing good with my $150 Sirui aluminum travel tripod. I see I'm going to have to step up my tripod game in the near future. Thanks for sharing your setup with us, I was curious about it for quite awhile. Also, I'm going to check out that beer next time I'm in Total Wine, hopefully the Temecula store has it. Next time you're in Total Wine might I recommend some beers from my home state of Michigan, check out Bells Two Hearted Ale (Excellent IPA 7.0% abv 4.27 rating on beer advocate) as well as Oberon (American style unfiltered wheat ale 5.8% abv 3.82 rating on beer advocate, great summer beer usually served with an orange slice on the glass). Cheers!
I vou can get a hand on it, try a Altenmünster. They don't even label their bottles. They emboss them ... And yes, it tastes even better. www.altenmuenster-brauerbier.de/beer/urig-wuerzig/
Thanks Nick... Excellent presentation. I can relate to the cost factor on tripods & ballheads. I did extensive research on all things tripod & ballheads. The Gitzo line is top notch, BUT they are foreign made, China I think. RRS tripods are good, but not great as in being overpriced & under engineered with respect to what you are actually getting. I went with the ProMediaGear carbon fiber 42mm 58" 4 section legs. I wanted the 67's but they discontinued them, sadly. B&H knocked 10% off of the legs so I jumped on it. I Paid a tad more than yours cost. Once again, I avoided RRS on their best ballheads too. I went with the Acratech GP Lever lock arca swiss ballhead & so glad I did. RRS is a proprietary designed head meaning you have to buy their once again overpriced plates to ensure fit compatibility. RRS has NO safety backups on their ballheads, the BH40 & BH55 heads respectively. The Acratech GP Lever has (3) safety backups that ensure your equip. does not fall off the ballhead. It would be wise to invest in a HD rubber band for the BH55's lever to prevent it from unlocking, a shirt sleeve could do this. The Acratech allows for the use of any manufacturers arca swiss plates because of the adj. screw opposite the lever. I often walk along streams & ponds, small rivers, etc., I have to know with absolute certainty my gear stays clamped on when the tripod & camera is slung over my shoulder. The Acratech gives me that assurance, the RRS heads do not. Both the products I have illustrated here are Made In The USA. I spent in the neighborhood of $1400.00 for my setup, it ain't cheap. No doubt you will get many years of good service out of your setup and I wish you well with your architectural photography... Think I'll have a beer! Bill Farr @ WGF Studio53... :-)
William Farr that's all interesting stuff to know about the acratech offerings. I really like their heads too but haven't used one extensively. I wonder if all the failsafes built in to the head would be frustrating to undo/work around when removing the camera, but I don't know exactly how they work.
Awesome Hefe, definitely in the tops. But before you declare a favorite, I recommend you try Schneider Weiss Tap 7 and Ayinger Brauweisse among others. Also of note, is the limited edition collaboration Hefe between Weihenstephaner and Sierra Nevada, Braupakt, absolutely delicious! I wish somehow, they won’t stop producing it. If you like the Weihenstephaner Hefe, check this one out also. All of these are among the top wheats in the world, without a doubt.
I'm not sure I care how to pronounce it, your pronunciation sounds ok (I'm not German), but more importantly another great video. Keep them coming. Great format.
Hi Nick, did you consider RRS TA-3 leveling base to go underneath the BH55 to level the base, I think it's much better than having panning clamp on top of the ball-head. The reason why is, the panning clamp only works if you are 100% level, but if your camera is a bit tilted up or down, then panning on the clamp would not be a good idea. With TA-3 or any other leveling base you always pan on the base of the ball-head. It's very handy for landscapes specially.
Nick, be aware that RRS tripod head mounting plates are not the same size as Arca Swiss plates. The Arca Swiss are smaller and the RRS quick release head will not grip the Arca Swiss plate. The camera will end up hitting the floor. The RRS screw type heads will secure an Arca Swiss plate perfectly. An RRS quick release head cannot be adjusted and so RRS plates and brackets must be used. PIA !
Yea, it's a bit hard to explain, but once you have used a top of the range tripod and head, there is no way you can go back. Perhaps fortunately I hike with mine, so it is lighter, smaller and hence about 1/2 that price. I like your description of why you need a lever clamp. I guess I'm similar, but I never quite figured out how to describe it.
Nick that beeeer co. should pay you royalties, I haven't drunk any alcohol for 4 years, just don't like it but found myself thirsty and Its winter here... suave...and the totem pole. Which brings me to ask about the insulation foam [DIY, inner inch fitting specs etc ] , ~ how much a foam-gap do you have once you wrapped the foam around with tape..? I found the edges an inch apart after a tight wrap.Silly question actually, think I will have to hunt for thinner foam. my bad. “If the facts don‘t fit the theory, change the facts.” -Albert Einstein. I have the latest of that model tripod, it is prodigious pod for steep mountain sides and catching Drones... not really but I love the little extra creative altitude.
Cam Munting haha. They can pay me in 6-packs. I'd be alright with that. As for the foam insulation, I compress it really firmly when wrapping so it's not as bulky.
It occurred to me one time, before disaster struck, that I was mounting $5000 of camera and glass to a $90 tripod. That was when the $400-$500 tripod became a no brainer.
I know this is late but you absolutely cannot drink Hefeweizen from the bottle! As per the comment below get yourself a nice pair of Weizenbier glasses! Love the videos and your work.
My name is stephan and in the UK it's pronounced Steven but all over Europe and the Mediterranean depending on the country and the accent, so it can be pronounced anyway you want
Interesting (missed that video), I got the same legs early 2019, and love them - no rrs head, but the quick release. These days (in Europe) you don’t get the giddies with Gitzo, they are now extra. Different subject, beer should be had in Germany and Böhmen. Especially white beer, and it does not have to be during Oktoberfest ;-)
Weihenstephaner belongs to the university i am attending (Technische- Universität München), you are able to study there how to brew beer. So it's not just the oldest brewery in the world, but also the only one who belongs to a university :)
Just stumbled across your video! Great pronunciation... ;)
How cool you guys found this :-) How about a photo tour in the factory ?
you all probably dont care at all but does anybody know of a way to log back into an instagram account?

It's so interesting if an american describes one of the best german beers. I enjoyed watching it. AND don't care about your pronouncing, everyone should understand what you mean and want. I appreciate it, that you even tried it to pronounce it. So, greetings from near Freising, Germany. Keep it going, take care and all the best. Philipp
German is my second language and you are pronouncing it correctly. "W" in German is pronounced as a "V" in American English. I have a similar System 3 tripod, but not extra long. Guten tag!
I was worried I might have overdone it with the "v"
I speak German. I can say it's definitely with the long "a" as the waiters mentioned. Additionaly, from you it sounds like "Wein" instead of "Weihen". So it's more "Wei"-"hen" where you here also the "h"
LOL...Great video....Insane beer choice... "Fake News!" Christopher Columbus had a couple of chilled bottles on board when he sailed west.
Maybe he had some Weihenstephaners on board. They were over 450 years old by then! Haha
Great Video, man! Totally convinced me to subscribe. I really enjoyed it. Greetings from Germany and keep up the good work.
I love beer and photography ..perfect review though
you are correct with your pronounciation of Weihenstephaner.
railbird another notch in the win column.
So my C220 is the winner 🤣
Great channel btw, your unique style inspires me doing more photos... 👍
All the best from Germany 🇩🇪
Been looking forward to this!
I knew it was going to be pricey but didn't expect $1800.
You are right!
I have several Really Right Stuff tripods. Yes $2,000 is a lot but I love mine.
Yes its right, you pronounce it like they do in their own advertisement
I am from Bavaria and I think your pronounciation is pretty good and would work in any bavarian beer garden
Dr. Thomas Uttich that would be the ultimate test.
Nick if you ever visit Germany I would be pleased to show some of our beer gardens and my landscape places. There are some nice ones of both over here. Thank you for the efford with your videos, they inspired me after 15 digital years back to film.
A quality video once again 😊
I'm German and you got it quite good.
His photography tips aren't bad either, BTW.
Cheers!
You pronounce it pretty darn good! Every German would proudly aknowledge and serve it to you with pleasure.
Gunnar Lahmann thanks! Now I need to book a flight to Germany to test your theory.
I vou can get a hand on it, try a Altenmünster. They don't even label their bottles. They emboss them ... And yes, it tastes even better. www.altenmuenster-brauerbier.de/beer/urig-wuerzig/
The center column seems to be the week point in tripods. To shakeing
I am pretty sure Gitzo tripods are made in Italy, not China
You are not wrong, Weihenstephaners are a great drop.
Pierre Burnaugh thanks for the recommendations. Always looking to try more hefe beers.
One of my favorite German beers too.
I'm not sure I care how to pronounce it, your pronunciation sounds ok (I'm not German), but more importantly another great video. Keep them coming. Great format.
Alan Gibson thank you sir!
You ever thought about a leveling base for your tripod rig? I find it is a lot faster on uneven terrain than messing with adjusting tripod legs.
Love that you are shooting a first generation 6D on a 1.800 USD tripod! Suck it, „I have the newest and best Sony/Fuji/Canon/Nikon/Panasonic“-fanboys!
It's about the skills - not the equipment!!
Yeah nothing will drive you nuts like a rickety tripod once you've gotten used to something more robust.
German here too, you are right!
Philipp Nagel yes! Vindication!
As for the foam insulation, I compress it really firmly when wrapping so it's not as bulky.
the vitus is even better imo
Nick your audio track is a bit off Synch, however good video, Love those Gitzo tripods. For me Anchor Steam beer. Made in San Francisco.
It occurred to me one time, before disaster struck, that I was mounting $5000 of camera and glass to a $90 tripod. That was when the $400-$500 tripod became a no brainer.
You are right about the pronunciation. W's in German are pronounced "V".
At what time does this video start Nick 🤣.
Great choice on the beer too!
klappers1 haha! 0:00 of course!
Good work Nick. Might just have to see if I can source me one of them Weihenstephaners (but not the tri-pod). Cheers!
You really need to visit the UK specifically the midlands and try Bathams Best Bitter. You will then find the ultimate ;-)
Nick, have you taped up the main legs on the tripod? if so with what?
Weihenstephaner belongs to the university i am attending (Technische- Universität München), you are able to study there how to brew beer. So it's not just the oldest brewery in the world, but also the only one who belongs to a university :)
Nico Harder #TUM WZW ;)
Nico Harder that must be a damn enjoyable college experience.
As we walked out of the exams, they served us the selfemade beer for free! our beer and your great videos are guiding me safely through my studies :)
BTW, love your channel.
Do you ever wish that you had the Giant (GT5563GS)?...I can't decide between the two, I also do architecture
I also have a BH-55 on Gitzo legs, much older legs but still carbon fiber :p I'm still looking for a plate to hold up my Linhof 4x5
Just bought my first proper tripod and I thought £130 was expensive.
Try some Erdinger too if you haven't done so. (also German.)
YES!!
Great video...not sure if I could afford that tripod...but one day! also What is the 4x5?
Very good pronunciation for an American!
Hudek Photography danke!
Oh man, if you like Hefe Weizen, you have to come to "Niederbayern" at some point. ;)
surprised you didn't get RRS legs, Gitzo customer service is horrendous and slow. I love the whole RRS line.
I got these legs many years ago. When they finally crap out on me, I might go with RRS.
Love that beer :-)
