      Every time JJ argues with another "analyst" that never played in the league before, that's all he says. "You've never played at the highest level before" ....And then what happens when other guys that also played in the league call him out for the same stuff that the analysts who didn't play in the league were talking about.... JJ's podcast is the best in the game right now. His level of insight, thoughtfulness and willingness to engage with all walks of NBA life, from players, to fans, to coaches, to media, is really refreshing. I think he'd be a fantastic coach.

  • @mobetta2092
    @mobetta2092 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    What catapulted JJ ahead of many others in terms of getting a head coaching interview is the exposure he showcased for himself through his podcast where he showed a wealth of knowledge for the game and also being unbiased, personable, direct, and no nonsensical about his views.
    This led to him gaining a following that resulted in ESPN calling him to appear and host their basketball shows, which now gave him mainstream exposure.
    These NBA Organizations pay attention.

    • @deifiedtitan
      @deifiedtitan ปีที่แล้ว

      Piggybacking off what you’ve said, I think his podcast especially has demonstrated that other players know him, respect him, and in some case like him and enjoy his company even if he was never an amazing player. Being a guy people want to be around combined with knowing what you’re talking about greases a lot of wheels compared to someone no one’s heard of with a resume or someone that’s good but people know is difficult to work with.

  • @bluewave3417
    @bluewave3417 ปีที่แล้ว +43

    He has the understanding of the game. But does he have the tolerance for all the different personalities? There’s a reason why many great basketball minds stayed mostly in assistant roles. Tex Winter is an example.

    • @michaelahurt
      @michaelahurt ปีที่แล้ว +2

      JJ? Yeah. I'd say that's one of his strengths to be honest.
      That doesn't always work out (thinking of Steve Nash) but I think a lot of these journeymen former players have that. Steve Kerr, Ty Lue, Ime Udoka, Monty Williams, Willie Green. Pat Riley. Phil Jackson. They tend to be good at building relationships. And you can see from his podcast how many relationships JJ has around the league.
      He also strikes me as a guy who would really study coaching and leadership.
      Honestly if you are really smart, have high emotional intelligence and have a tremendous work ethic, you can kind of do whatever you want and JJ has all three plus a low ego which makes him easier to work with.

    • @leopoldvonwinterfeld5801
      @leopoldvonwinterfeld5801 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah but I think if you look at who he actually gets on his podcasts from the current players, it's pretty obvious he enjoys great respect among them. The Ben Simmons interview was terrible but JJ got that guy on his pod. So him enjoying so many good relationships shows that he pretty much understands how the modern athlete (I mean he retired two years ago) works and thinks.
      But I agree with you in terms of is he able to handle all those different guys? Would he be able to get Ayton to play hard? I doubt it. Would he magically pull a backbone out of his magic hat and put it up KAT's ass? I'm also doubtful on that.
      In the end, I believe this was more to get his name into the conversation of being a potential head coach rather than getting it right now. I could imagine that the interview process for a HC gig is also pretty unique, so he maybe wanted to test the waters moreso than actually pursuing it, knowing he probably isn't the leading candidate.

    As a huge Duke fan the way JJ played the game and now breaks it down and covers it he would make a great head coach just like I believe Scheyer is gonna be a great coach at Duke. They understand the game different and I hate when people play the race card. GA said it perfectly is about relationships and connections. I started my business without spending any of my money because of my connections and relationships, ever business is like that

    I really respect what Gilbert said about taking a picture or giving an autograph to someone even when you're eating with your family. So many players get so pissy about messing with their alone time with their family, but you're gonna see them again, probably a lot, and literally 30 seconds after this encounter, so what's the big deal? The fan, however, will probably not only ever get the chance to be so close to you in person again, but it'll be a moment they can cherish for the rest of their life. With fame comes attention and adoration. Without the fans, you aren't shit. Embrace it.

    When Gilbert touched on the fact that. You should always take that picture with a kid, as you never know, he may end up being your boss, it immediately reminded me of Isiah Thomas and Mat Ishbia.
    Ishbia grew up a Thomas fan and gave Thomas the CEO position of the UWM subsidiary One World Pharma, Inc.. This was after Thomas had been booted from the from office due to sexual misconduct allegations.

    Gil made some great points, but even some former players get screwed over in coaching opportunities. Patrick Ewing worked for years and had to go to college to get his shot. Jerry Stackhouse won a G league championship as a head coach and still didn’t get a shot in the NBA, Sam Cassell been on the bench for years, still looking for his shot
