I would say to anybody starting out now, whether that be deer stalking, foxing or even ratting, buy a half decent thermal spotter. Safety is paramount.
100% agree mate. Like I said in the video you can pick up a thermal spotter from £250 which is more than capable of detecting a person couple of hundred yards away.
Very good little video Jim. People still think they have a right to roam anywhere they see fit. I've had a similar thing happen to me a few years ago. Keep those videos coming mate, well done 👍👍
Very true Jim.I also find swinging the gun and it's thermal over and back spotting is a total pain in the ring too, especially without a set of sticks. Spotter is less of a chore to swing about.
Wow that’s amazing just shows how valuable a thermal spotter is when out shooting, did i ever tell you i found an elderly lady in the middle of the field one night whilst out foxing she was confused and cold been out all afternoon and got lost walking her dog ot was around midnight when i found her tell you about it next time we chat 👍👍
@@jimwood I no mate I think some people think they have the right to wonder anywhere mate , I had it happen on private ground with no footpaths at all once and the chap tried to say I had no rights to be there 🤣😂🤣
That's a good point Jim , I haven't got a monocular and I scan around with the rifle on a tripod and that rifle is pointing at what I'm looking at !! Great video for awareness of what could go wrong 👍
Thanks Shane. Yeah I thought it was worth putting this video together mainly to point put safety awareness mate. Just goes to show that you need to be so vigilant on what is around you at night.
Good video jim! The amount of people i see on my permissions walking there dogs wherever they like is unbelievable! Last year i went out for a scout about and bumped into about 15 japanese tourists taking photos of my dairy farmer friends cows! Cant be to careful!
@@jimwood my mate put a track in for the cows and now every holiday maker seems to think its there to walk the dogs! I put a sign up saying no public right of way so hopefully they will stay clear.

Good video. Thermal spotters are vital. Nothing can hide from them. Again it’s people thinking they have a right to wander anywhere. Still trespass by that person but you’d be 1000% screwed if you fired that rifle when someone was encroaching on you.
Absolutely. At yhe end of the day a thermal or night vision are your eyes in the dark so I would like to think no accidents would happen. But your right should a shot have been fired you wouldn't have a leg to stand on. My thermal is always around my neck.
Excellent job Jimbo. I think if you had gone to that person ( having first hidden your rifle ) because they would then probably say you threatened them ! And asked what they were doing on private land, the response you would have got, would be what I’ve had before. “I’m exercising my right to roam” I’ve had the same thing, folks wandering off footpaths and ending up causing a problem for us. Buy a cheap thermal, it doesn’t matter if you can’t identify a fox at 200 yards, you’ll know something is coming . “ they shouldn’t have been there” isn’t your defence in court 🤷🏼♂️🥴
I completely agree with you Dave. I have confronted people in the past during the day but never had an issue at night luckily. All it would take is for them to get their head up their arse and make that one phone and then you have a massive problem on your hands through no fault of your own. It would be helpful if land owners put up more signs to make it completely clear that it's private land. But some walkers would still ignore it I guess. As long as we do everything by the book that's all that matters.
Spot on, we've the same problem on a golf course. Thermal spotters have saved us a few times now from right to roam. Another advantage is thermal can see through thin bush cover where nv units don't .
Absolutely mate 👍 like I said in the video they don't have to be top of the range but they are worth their weight in gold. And yes folk think they can roam anywhere these days
Very true mate had that happen a few times over the 30 years I've been shooting even before thermal spotters where available usually if that happens I wrap up for the night but very true safety first number one priority 👍
I cull NZ possums and I also use a thermal spotter and like yours mine has LRF, meaning I can range it at the same time. Unfortunately I can't afford a thermal scope, so I use red light to shoot by. I have tried an infra red scope but they need quite a bit of adjustment to make a clear and ethical quick kill, as they take too long to set up! But as you said, thermal spotters are a useful safty tool as well. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for that and I appreciate you watching. And yes they are a useful tool to have for hunting as well as safety. I know thermal scopes aren't cheap. But having a thermal spotter is a great bit of kit. Can you not use a night vision scope then rather than a red filter?
@@jimwood If by when you mean "night vision" you mean IR, I did, I said that in my first post. I was using a Sytong HT-77LRF, but it took too long to clarify the picture, it became a hindrance! So, I went back to a red filter, which possums are not overly bothered by.
@richardt.4224 yes sorry that's what I meant. Have you tried any other nv scopes? And what sort of ranges are you shooting out to? The reason I ask is there are plenty of nv scopes on the market as you well know and some are alot better than others. I have done done reviews on the Hikmicro Alpex A50t and Hikmicro Cheetah lrf which are both very good scopes. Even the pard nv007 is a good rear add on as well. I know it comes down to cost but it might be work a look. If you have a chance check out my video's with them they will give you an idea of quality and ranges at night.
@littledavey2169 that's the trouble, people seem to think they walk wherever they want. Sorry but it doesn't work like that. They wouldn't like it if a stranger came wondering around their garden.
That’s a great point you made Jim iv actually had this issue myself and was in that daytime tho. I confronted the sed dog walker who proceeded to call the police 😂😂 totally get were your coming from on my ground they jst appeared on the crest of a hill and i was lucky to see them as I was facing that direction at night without some sort of night vision or thermal spotter could result in a serious accident 👍
Thanks mate and yeah some people not all think they can wonder anywhere they like. I bet they would soon have something to say if their dog got shot. Hopefully nothing like that would happen but it has been known especially with live stock in the fields. So yes a thermal spotter to me is an essential bit of kit 👌
Not good that someone is trespassing & placing themselves at risk, but at least the dogs were on a lead by the look of it & not aimlessly running about like I regularly see in my thermal.
@@jimwood yes mate, either people genuinely lost or they just don't care. Either way they have to be treated very carefully when your a firearms owner. Always a good idea to film the interaction just incase.
@stevenlord782 I completely agree with that mate. You have to be so careful these days. You might be 100% in the right but it only takes them to say you threatened them even if you haven't then it's a whole new ball game to prove you didn't. So recording any event like that is a must 👍
dosent have to be thermal, any night vision spotter is adequate, most people cant afford them at that price,i always have a quick left to right scan before taking the shot anyway.
Yes I agree night vision will also do the job, it was just a point to show how careful you have to be in the field at night. I'm sure we all take the necessary precautions to ensure safety comes first but it goes to show that things can change in an instant
