Seems like Sha'Uhl is describing the ego here. Or the ego that is enslaved by the flesh. The giving of the law he describes also looks like God trying to expose the shadow-self, minimizing its grip and growth. Perhaps, this is why confessing sins and forgiving in the chruch was encouraged in one of the epistles. Maybe someone who's expert in cognitive phsychology can help bring more light into this.
