Under your circumstances means:-
*How much you genuinely can afford, without being a task master overworking someone with little pay in the name of “I cannot afford it”. Remember God is always looking for fairness in everything.
*How much work load you have.
*How much help you can offer the person with some of the work
Now about duration of stay, it’s not you who communicates. Remember the person looking for the job is the one who communicates how long they want to work for you. So ask them how long they would like to stay, and then also talk about how they can leave incase they want to leave earlier than the time they have stipulated.
Finally, talk through how you will periodically appraised each other because many times maids leave earlier than planned because of a build up of anger or feelings of being mistreated. Periodic appraisals say every 4 months help you arrest situations before they escalate.

Oh yes I do! Do they not give us salary in the marketplace while on probation? They give us! So why not for the domestic worker?

A person on probation is still working, even though under supervision. So yes, pay them. And remember this probation is what will get you to the place you desire. So it’s inevitable.
