I'm an English Romany gypsy but my grandmother was a Young from the border of England and Scotland. The discrimination has never gone away. My father still lives by the side of the road in a caravan and told me only a few years ago that barely a week goes by without someone driving by and shouting abuse out of their car at him. He's in his late 60s now. Imagine that your whole life.
You mean reservation! Because that's all those sites are. It's disgusting the way they have stopped people camping up and down. There's a place near Appleby, People have camped for hundreds and hundreds of years, and now the council have dug it up and made it a ditch. I left England and bought my own land in Ireland last year. It's not possible to live the way our ancestors did anymore.

Proud of my Gypsy traveller heritage I’m a descendants of the tribe that was sadly deported in the 1800’s era many were sent to Caribbeans Mexico America and also Canada
I have centuries of my Scottish roots' genealogy, from my father, born on Shetland, buried in Morningside, Edinburgh, and I had NO idea about these peoples. So grateful for this video. It explains a lot; the ancestral pain of not being allowed to be, and why I know the name of my future Scottish Home, Garden and Farm is "BELONG HERE." All are welcome. Aloha, Blessings, Claire

Edward A. Moonstar 1 second ago Many of us dislike the term Gypsy... My Grandmother would insist in being called Romani. She was a Lowland Scots Romani. After all the term is a misidentification.
Not everyone is Romani though and people all have different preferences for what they prefer to be called. I prefer traveller. Some prefer nomad. Some prefer Romani and the list continues.
You have peaked my interest. So, the history in England, as I believe was that the Egyptians Act was enacted in 1530, whereas anti-Gypsy legislation in Scotland was enacted in 1541. The last person to be executed under this law was in 1714, whereas in England, I believe it was 1650. Looks like I need to do a little more research to see why this was. Anybody know if Scotland was independent at this time?
Hi James, hopefully we can help a bit with your question regarding the Scottish and English union. The Union of the Crowns took place in 1603 when James VI of Scotland became James I of England after the death of Queen Elizabeth I. Over 100 years later, in 1707, The Acts of Union were passed by the English and Scottish Parliaments. This led to the creation of the United Kingdom of Great Britain.
@@jamesbowring9528 you promote a fantasy way off life, with your silly way of speaking as if it’s some how mysterious and a lost civilisation, as per my previous comment , it was a horrendous way of life and the culture especially in regards to the treatment of woman was particularly brutal, my mum lived that life along with 16 other of her siblings, her brother wrote many many published books sugar coating the lifestyle and the oral tradition of story telling and it’s all BS
@@garyjameswilson There was a time when anti-Gypsy legislation was brought into existence and a time when Scotland was independent after Robert the Bruce. So, which ever, one of these facts seems to have sent you spiralling out of control on here, please let me know, as I have eluded to no treatment, on whatever side. I was just trying to ascertain whether Scotland had yet been brought under the Union by the time of the last Romani execution in Scotland
This video needs updated. Gypsy's and travellers are not the same group of people. Dna is showing our history. And travellers with highland names are the Scottish Highlanders.

Commonly known Scotalnds gypsies as well as Irish gypsies are not related to the Gypsies or Roma from north India. It is just a way to describe their lifestyle. They are part of Scottish history as well as Irish.
No group of people should be marginalized for the way they choose to live. If society as a whole, in this day and age, claims to be inclusive then travelers should receive the same equality and respect. 20,000 or 25,000 years ago, there were bow tents in scandanavia with animal skins- the remains have been found by archeologists- one scottish traveller family still lived in these bow tents in the 1980's. the tents had tarpaulins by then. 20,000 to 25,000 years ago these proud nomadic kings & queens were living their lives in the northern hemisphere of earth.
And I’m talking about real summer walkers or tinkers who lived in gelly tents in and around Fife, picking berries and farm working in the summer and all that BS , and yes I’m very angry about how they are looked upon as somehow a wonderful free, nomadic tribe , singing their way through history, it’s all BS …….read my comments , read the Horsieman by Duncan Williamson , it’s a sugar coated version on that lifestyle…………
Us Romany Gypsies never refer to ourselves as Travellers, we're Gipsies because that's how our ancestors first presented themselves as Egyptians, in England and Scotland, hence why there's Egyptian Acts in Scots and English Law. x
