- What is RTA-TB?
RTA-TB stands for Real Time Attack minus Time Bonus. Sonic 3 speedruns are timed using standard real time, but eliminating the time it takes for the time bonus from each act to finish. The reason for this is because you are awarded a 50000 point time bonus whenever you finish an act under a minute, which takes 8.7 seconds. Over a minute and it'll give you 10000 points, which takes 1.8 seconds. So if two runners finished a level with a 0:59 time and a 1:00 time respectively, the slower runner would have the time advantage due to the longer time bonus on the faster player. Raw RTA would encourage intentionally going slow to go fast, which is stupid, so RTA-TB was born.

This is the original Sonic 3 & Knuckles version released back in 1994 played on the Sega Genesis Model 2.
My ultimate goal for this game has finally been achieved. I spent countless hours, months constantly grinding this category to reach the sub 30 mark. Out of all the speedruns that I've done over the past 3 years, this is the one that I'm most proud of. My magnum opus you could say. Small flubs in Flying Battery 2, Sandopolis 2 and a couple of other places, but everywhere else is absolutely clean.

why 2 bosses?
Spindashing out of the Elevator triggers a glitch called Slope Glitch. This same glitch is done in Ice Cap and Flying Battery. If you're standing on an object and it gets unloaded, the game gets confused and keeps you floating in the air even when he's not grounded.(which is why Sonic is teetering)
In Launch Base, Knuckles normally fights two of the bosses in his playthrough. That same fight is still loaded in the level, even if you play as Sonic. Performing a level wrap to that area still triggers Knuckles's fight. The game is coded to end Act 1 if you kill any boss as Sonic or Tails, since they normally fight one. So since you're fighting two of them, you can kill the first one and Act 1 will be considered completed. If you keep the other one alive to Act 2, then kill it there, the game treats the boss kill as a flag to end Act 2 immediately.

Sprite tiles get replaced with different tiles when the signpost appears. This happens every time but bosses usually get blown up or are offscreen while this happens

Never seen a sonic 3 speedrun before, what... is happening? At 5:10 I mean. He dies, then he teleports to the end of the stage???
the death is for deloading act 1, and then joey clips in and wraps by zipping and touching the left border of the stage, thus ending on the other end of the stage (right border) where he can spindash up a slide to get to the boss room

entering the booster isn't necessary, it was keeping the 2nd boss alive and killing it at the beginning of the act that did it
What kind of controller do you use? I know it’s prob a genesis but how would you be pressing multiple buttons at once on a standard genesis controller?

speedrun tips:
there’s one extra chaos emerald in angel island zone act 2. im too lazy to tell where it is, so find a tutorial.
there’s a way you can get hyper sonic in mushroom hill zone act 2. just find them all, since im still lazy

RTA minus time bonus, so whenever you complete a level, the timer is paused when the time bonus starts scrolling down and it's unpaused when the time bonus goes down to 0, that way you don't save time by going slow

0:30 from my researches you can jump off this ledge with enough height to get to the speed shoes platform and you don't need to use the spring. But confuckinggrats! This Run is fuckin insane. Keep it up my man!

It has something to do with keeping the bridge off screen so it doesn't spawn, since when it respawns it plays a weird animation where it drops down for some reason I think??? I'm pretty sure I've seen the animation before, and it even plays a noise because I've heard it before while playing and I think I've seen it drop down, I don't know how speedruns work
is this glitchless or is that another category?
