"Nie pytaj mnie" is the singer singing "Don't ask me why I'm with her" (her being Poland) but for the first half of the song it seems he's singing about his lover. It's basically a song about how shitty life was in Poland in 80s - and yet people still were patriotic and remained here hoping for something to change. The music video was showing the most depressing stuff they could find :)

The vast majority of songs from the 1980s in Poland had a political message. Songs were censored and so "BAJM-Józek, nie datuję ci tej nocy" says about the imposition of martial law on December 13, 1980. Kult and Republika sang about the hopelessness that was in Poland at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s. Then Poland was a very gray country with great complexes in relation to the "west"

    • @dushmanmardom
      @dushmanmardom 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Well not really. That's the best thing about those songs - on a face level this is a song about a guy, and how she's not gonna forgive him that night. BUT you could read it as a political song, but this could fly under the radar.

"Zawsze tam gdzie ty" is one of the most beautiful love songs that I've heard.
Here's translation if you need it.
"Zawsze tam gdzie ty" ("Always where you are")
I will turn each breath into a restless wind
So it takes me back to where you have your world
I will put all whispers into one, warm cry
So it finds you right up where you've hidden your dreams
Now I know that days only exist
For me to come back to you every night of gold
I don't know words that have any greater meaning
When I only know, only know one thing
To be there, to always be where you are
Don't ask me about tommorow - it's a thousand years away
We're sailing a white boat into an unknow time
I will put our whispers into one, warm cry,
So they don't escape from us, so they dry the tears
Now I know that days only exist
For me to come back to you every night of gold
I don't know words that have any greater meaning
When I only know, only know one thing
To be there, to always be where you are
Now I know that days only exist
For me to come back to you every night of gold
I don't know words that have any greater meaning
When I only know, only know one thing
To be there, to always be where you are
To wake up and to fall asleep in our own heaven
To be there, to always be where you are
To say goodbye each dawn and to come back to you again
To be there, to always be where you are
To wake up and to fall asleep in our own heaven
To be there, to always be where you are
    Always where you are

Hi Trev :) Song "nie pytaj o Polskę" from band Obywatel GC (it means the citizen GC and GC is from the name of the vocalist Grzegorz Ciechowski) is about love to his homeland- Poland. He is singing "don't ask me why I'm with her (Poland), don't ask me why I'm not with any other (country) and why there's no other place for me". This song was written in 1988 when in Poland still was a comunism. People where poor, unemployed also there was a lot of alcoholism and criminality but the singer regardless of this still love his country. I hope it help you understand what this song is about.

@@The0Stroy @0plp0 Kryzysowa Narzeczona => "Emergency/Crisis Fiancé" - as for the singer this is a crisis, you can't just translate the word you need to give back the sense behind it.
Trevor interpretation for you (google translated, sorry i don't have time to do proper translation)
The song is written from the perspective of a man who addresses his would-be life partner. The woman he apparently had an affair with in the past is now far away; sends him greetings on a postcard "out of nowhere". She did not choose to live with her former lover and, as can be seen from his words, she did the right thing. If she had stayed, she would be "at the bottom" and would live "slowly", a completely colorless life.

The words “you'll never know what you've lost” appear in the chorus thus seem to be sarcasm - the man in bitter words admits the woman is right and actually approves of the choice she made.

The text of the song came from the hand of Andrzej Mogielnicki, who explained in the magazine "Poezja" that the words concern the problem of emigration to the west.

"This song is not a text for young people, it is a text written for the 30-year-old generation," said Mogielnicki. “17-year-old boys don't have girls who suddenly emigrate abroad. I am writing this for myself, for my colleagues, for my generation ”.

The one I really miss here is Dżem, I guess there is no bigger band than Dżem who had so many hits in 80's and are still popular like Czerwony jak cegła, Wehikuł czasu, List do M., Autsajder. The most interesting fact about Dżem is that when Metallica played concert in Poland Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo performed Dżem song - Wehikuł czasu.

Obywatel G.C song You had trouble to understand based on lyric is about this crazy plathonian love polish people hav torward their country. Something about our rough history makes our love for Poland very... specific. Also Poland, especially during PRL era ( so "communist"era ) made this love kinda pathological one.
In the lyrics, subject of the text was being asked "what does even hold You in that place?" and in replies he was adressing Poland in the manner more fitting a gentle lover than a country.
Love this song, kinda twisted but lovely and deep.
@Trev feel free to hit me up about some of cultural stuff, love this pieces, propably can bring some interesting insight to You if Youre interested :)

Varius Manx - Piosenka Księżycowa (Moon Song) is one of the greatest Polish ballads from early 1990s. Anita Lipnicka's beautiful voice, stirring music and poetic, romantic lyrics make this song a real piece of art. For me it's one of the milestones in polish pop/soft-rock music genre ever. Another good choices from Varius Manx with Anita Lipnicka on vocals repertoire are "Pocałuj noc" and "Zanim zrozumiesz".
Talking about ballads, I would also recommend listening to Rotary - Na jednej z dzikich plaż. This one hit wonder from 1996 is one of the earliest takes on britrock genre in Polish mainstream. Another, and certainly very successful Polish britrock band is Myslovitz, who were on top during late 1990s and early 2000s.

3:18 Bajm - "Józek, nie daruję Ci tej nocy" (Józek, I will not forgive you this night). The original title of this song was - Wojtek, I will not forgive you this night. But the censorship did not agree. Because that title of the song was a clear allusion to a certain general. A general who wore dark glasses and was named Wojtek. And which general one night in December 1981 introduced martial law in Poland.

When Poland was under ZSSR hands there was strong censorship and we have to create lyrics that was not an offence to the government (of that time) as others points out the vast majority of songs from the 1980s in Poland had a strong political message and sometimes anti-government hidden deep in between the words in the lyrics.

    Hello there,
First I'm gonna admit that I'm 27 polish and rly having fun and appriciate your content here. Sorry for a lacks in my english.
I recommend you this - also polish classical singer, some may compare her to french Edith Piaf classical singer even.
(th-cam.com/video/vyp9pIoC-gY/w-d-xo.html) (title in english could be "I love you life") but,
    Interesting fact:
On this video (th-cam.com/video/kg9ko1HZkyg/w-d-xo.html) Jerzy Kukuczka is singing it's words "Kocham Cię życie", while he is coming down after climbing Annapurna 8 thousand meters peak in Himalaya. It's interesting so far because during communism in Poland, polish climbers were writing himalaism history and made major of winter first ascents in history, as they're called "polish ice warriors" cause of that, getting huge respect in a climbing community. They were fighting both with highest mountains in the world and their own country issues, like closed borders. Kukuczka was the second man to climb all 8-thusands, just after losing first place in a kind of race with Reinhold Messner these days. And he made it so fast comparing to Messner who starter years eariler. Don't know if you actually interested in that, but it's huge fascinating piece of polish history. It's just a sport you can say, but comparing to all that sh*t these days - unbelievable. Few years ago I was in Himalaya, trekking this mountain to the base camp, where I had a short talk with guy who met Kukuczka many times, when he was passing-by to make a real climbs. Mindblowing memory and experience for me. Some facts there:

    Best regards!

Every Pole who has the so-called Slavic Soul knows that music is the best balm. The music of the 1980s is in many cases a rebellion of young people who began to notice the hopelessness of the contemporary system of our state. Long before the plastic trash of modern Eurovision, the song had to contain a good, even poetic text ... Dzieki i pozdrawiam. Try it Odzial Zamkniety

Lady Pank's 'Zawsze tam gdzie Ty' is such a softie compared to their much earlier, cynical take on love and practical realities of relationships in 'Kryzysowa narzeczona' (Crisis-time fiancee): 'You could've hit the rock bottom / But you didn't / You'll never know / What you've missed'
BTW, 'niejeden raz' means 'not once', or 'numerous times'...
You could have been my crisis-time fiancee,
Drunk with me what's been brewed for us.
    You could have been mine.
From a silenced radio receiver we would have listened to news
Till the morning light and got wasted
    Numerous times
You could've hit the rock bottom, but you didn't
You'll never know what you've missed
You could have been my crisis-time fiancee,
Live our lives slowly, as was prescribed
    You could have been mine.
We would have got by somehow
Instead of wishing me Merry Christmas
    On a postcard from somewhere

Thank you for that Trev! That was such a fun trip down the memory lane. I know every single song. Bajm was a first band whose concert I attended in the 80s. Very often with these old songs, especially from communist times is that the lyrics are poetic, have many metaphors and hidden anti communist messages. That is why direct translations might still not make sense to you. 😀

Obywatel G. C. "Nie pytaj o Polskę" is really deep song. It says that he loves his country (Poland) even if there is not beautiful and most people live in a boring, grey world. He sings about dirty trainstations, drunk people who mumbling in their sleep something like:"until we're alive She (Poland) is alive too" (words from our National Anthem). He is singing about Poland something like about a lover or wife, and he says that he can't find other place to live for him, cause this love is uncondictonaly. If you could guess it was written during the comunism. I'm not very good in English, but I hope you understand that mesage I tried to describe. I suppose it's not easy to feel the spirit of this song, if you're not from here... Nowadays it's totally different than in 80' or 90'.
    Greetings from Poland ;)

The first song of LADY PANK is just KURWA MAĆ. I was born in 1980 and I met this song in 2005 but I know the lyrics by heart. Nie pytaj o Polskę is a song about life in Poland, about the gray in those days and why are you still sitting here and not going somewhere else. It describes the terrible history of our nation after WWII, then communism, transformation

Im a little late with this comment, but who knows - maybe you will record second part :)
So below you will find few classics that I have chosen, which i think you should listen and maybe review at least few of them. (going from the oldest stuff, by the decade).
    1. `60: Czerwone Gitary (Red Guitars) - polish answer to The Beatles :) This music came from the darkest of communism times in Poland, but you may find it interesting. Top songs - Takie ładne oczy (Such pretty eyes), Kwiaty we włosach (Flowers in the hair), Biały Krzyż (White Cross)
    2. `70: Tadeusz Nalepa (solo) and with his band Breakout - in US standards, he was like polish B.B.King: grandfather of blues and absolute legend. Top songs - Kiedy byłem małym chłopcem (When I was a little boy), Modlitwa (Prayer), Oni zaraz przyjdą tu (They're about to come here)
    3. `80: Jacek Kaczmarski - probably greatest singing poet and bard in polish music, you can easily compare him to Bob Dylan. His songs were very important in times of martial law in Poland and even after that. Top songs - Mury (Walls) , Obława (Manhunt), Epitafium dla Wysockiego (Epitaph for Władimir Wysocki)
    4. `90: Illusion - this rock/grunge/metal/hardcore (4 in 1 ;) ) band had a great vocals, even greater riffs and you should definitely hear them if you like a `90s heavy music. Top songs - Cierń (Thorn), Nóż (Knife), To co ma nadejść (What is to come)
    5. `00 Coma - some people love them, some people hate them, but all in all they are really solid and important band on classic rock scene in Poland. Top songs - Leszek Żukowski (Leszek Żukowski - name and last name of a guy is the title of this song :)), 100 tysięcy jednakowych miast (100,000 identical cities), Trujące rośliny (Poisonous plants)
And, as a bonus, ihmo greatest band from Poland, which songs are in english - ACID DRINKERS! You should definitely listen to those three albums - Infernal Connection, The State Of Mind Report, High Proof Cosmic Milk - they are like crown jewels from their legacy :)
Enjoy and please record second part to this video :)
    Best regards!
    Marcin

I see plenty of great recommendations
    But few things seem missing
    Try please
Budka Suflera - za ostatni grosz (for my very last cent)
Zbigniew Wodecki - anything he sang (best to start are
'Lubię wracać tam gdzie byłem'/I like to go back to where I was
    Or
Zacznij od Bacha) his voice may resemble you a bit vibe like chris de burgh and F. Sinatra
Try Geppert, Górniak, Maryla Rodowicz (but not the Polish anthem;) )
And if you'd like to listen to something like the Beatles please try
    Czerwone Gitary
I do not recommend artist with specific poetry vibe since it's so hard to catch and get this feelings but if you're more into Polish language then I can find you so much more.
    And final blues
Kasa Chorych - Chce Cie kochać (more happy blues but really worth trying)
    Take care!

Hi, majority of these songs have a second meaning. They convey a sense of harsh relationship between Poland and the Poles; it was hard to be a patriot during the times of communism, under the socialist regime, where you basically meant nothing, unless you had some connections with the Party. Nonetheless the authors express their bitter and nostalgic connection with their country.
If you want any deeper explanation on the meaning of any of these songs, ask me:)
    Greetings from Poland

To really appreciate the quality of the songs you need to understand the poetry of the lyrics, the story behind them, sometimes even a social or a political context which played an important role in creating many of these masterpieces.

    2. "Jo! I won't forgive you that night." by BAJM (read: BAYM) - and in the chorus: "you appear and disappear, and you disappear." So it is a metaphor for the relationship between a man and a woman.
    3. "Don't ask about Poland." by Citizen G.C. - The main sentence in the text is: "Don't ask me why I'm with her". Thus, the author describes his difficult relationship with a woman, in the guise of Poland. It's simply a question of why you still live in Poland and won't try to leave. The author answers simply "It is complicated". (as in relationship). And the video is the opposite of the "positive" and "colorful" propaganda practiced by the government at the time. It simply shows the reality as it was then. Very, lame, old and GREY.
    4. "Poland" by Kult (Cult) - Another form of struggling with lame, old and GREY reality of that time. It describes what everyone saw when they went out on the street, but it was impossible to talk about it in official propaganda. I wouldn't worry about the soberness of the vocalist. It is his stage acting. You know, every vocalist has his own style and way of drawing attention to himself, e.g. we still don't know if Jimmy showed his willie at the concert in Florida in 1969 ;).
