I got to play with Geoffrey once - his compositions are really interesting, so pretty and distinct. His playing was just fantastic - and he was just the nicest guy!
Geoffrey's tips: 1. Just tap on beat one (although you'll notice Geoffrey is tapping his foot on 1 and 3 on that blues) 2. Don't play endless eighth notes, use space and let your drummer have some too
Geoffrey is being far too humble about his abilities: He has 'chops' galore! But, how reassuring to hear that someone you admire has musicians THEY sincerely admire for their abilities. (Perhaps those who play music at the very top level don't need to boast or feel threatened by others; instead they tend to be very gracious about sharing what they know, and spreading appreciation for the talents of other musicians)
As a bassist, I think about playing fast as well and I realized the attitude and perception of the time of a quarter note has made a difference with my playing between the notes/beats. Thanks for the confirmation...a la Dizzy. And back to practicing...
When I saw Dizzy in the early 90s, that's what I wanted to ask him, but didn't - about playing fast and keeping time and tapping on 1. Thanks Geoffrey!
It’s way easier to play outside very fast as opposed to playing inside... I think this ends with Barry Harris and maybe a Benny Green or Sacha Perry .... lost art form
Was just thinking the same. Playing basic "outside" patterns up and down the instrument has become a cop-out from actually creating nice melodic phrases
