      Read my comment. The first one modified like that was for john Wayne so he could spin the rifle on horseback to chamber a new round. When u know there's a reason for it it's a little less awful. th-cam.com/video/Dc-GnbmVPQ8/w-d-xo.html
      It was later used by others but that's why it was made that way.

      @@rogerbussiii They had m-lok free float handguards during the time of John Wayne movies? Or are you referring to the big loop lever? BL Lever is fine, that handguards got to go though.

    Chris, thanks very much for another great selection of interesting firearms. It is especially nice to see an episode free from lots of nearly identical polymer framed double stack 9mm pistols. Nothing wrong with those, but just so nice to see other stuff.

    19:50 that large circular loop is what they made for old western movies, I believe it was John Wayne who . This allows you to spin the rifle on horseback and in doing so chamber a new round. I'd definitely be careful but that was how and the reason it was used. Just something I saw a long time ago and I've always thought it was cool as a kid.

      Probably because they were ergonomic improvements.

    • @RIPPER334
      @RIPPER334 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@CreepyPastaSalad You've never shot a lever action rifle have you?
      A forward grip, mounted on a section of rail, in front of an aluminum hand guard, would not be an ergonomic upgrade for cranking on a lever gun.
      ...and not to mention the aesthetics. Which just look like some easily impressed 12 year old video gamer level derp. 🤣

    • @CreepyPastaSalad
      @CreepyPastaSalad 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RIPPER334 Actually, I have. I run a .357 Henry with mostly polymer furniture. Similarly bought used; the price was really good because it was in a hunting store where nobody would touch anything black with a ten-foot pole.
      While I do believe the placement of the foregrip is a bit far away, and having it on an aluminum rail is perhaps questionable, it isn't a bad idea ergonomically so long as the lever doesn't have to swing too far forward.
      Bracing the rifle into the right shoulder with the left arm while the right hand runs the lever doesn't work as well when the left hand, upturned, is cupping the forend. Gripping with a downturned hand puts strain on the thumb. Additionally, the balance, at least on my rifle, is a lot more toward the center, and being able to have a proper grip closer in definitely helps with stability.
      As for aesthetics, it's a gun, not a painting. Some people don't buy guns to hang on walls or show off to their friends.

  • @roberttaylor6030
    @roberttaylor6030 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The desert eagle definitely has a cool factor but in my experience with 2 of them they're not good guns, very prone to jamming. I even seen a slide on one shoot downrange, it was a rental and the on site gunsmith took it away and didn't bring it back.

      Aesthetic purism is the bane of practical utility.

    • @bmstylee
      @bmstylee 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Except all it did was make heavier and fatter which seems to fly in your utility argument. A hunting gun is supposed to be quick and handy. Not mall ninjaed out.

    • @CreepyPastaSalad
      @CreepyPastaSalad 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bmstylee I've not argued anything yet. I've merely put out why someone would find reason to do what they did with it and assumed its look is why it's so abhorrent to you. Opining that it is horrible is to dismiss that there could be any reason for anything on it. Sure, it may not be aesthetically pleasing, but so what? The model is newish; cowboy LARPers wouldn't have accepted it anyway from a purity standpoint.
      The only mall ninja thing on it the foregrip. Maybe the rail on top, too, but I'll contend, if you want to argue, that the idea of hunting is humane shot placement, and an optic is going to beat something traditional like buckhorns any day for the same amount of training. If you're doing the stalking type of hunting, the extra holes getting tangled on brush might be a concern. However, that is not the case for everyone or all terrains.
      Regardless, have you considered that this gun might've been used or kept for something other than hunting? Target sports perhaps? A foregrip and railed forend might get caught on brush, but that doesn't mean anything in a bowling pin shoot. There are ergonomic reasons to have a vertical foregrip, as well.
      With as many holes for affixing things as that aluminum has, I'm not so sure it'd be appreciably heavier. Aluminum is denser, yes, but what's on there is way thinner than a person would get with a wood forend. Presuming this gun was for hunting, if you want to discuss weight as a measure of handiness, the lever gun is already a lost cause with the underbarrel tube of steel (and presumably ammunition) unless the context is squirrel hunting with a .22LR. Even then, a bolt action would better suit.
      Therefore, no, there are clearly ways this rifle stood to gain utility from the modifications. Mismatched colors are the main sin this rifle is guilty of.

      He's a fan of star wars. So what? To each their own.... Freedom.
      I'm sure he's been a fan since long before Disney bought the franchise.
