      I see you don't necessarily always hit less (low) notes with the LH as other instruments join. For example, when the bass guitar joins, you sometimes still do hit 3 bass notes at once, spread out in the left hand. But as you say, you do it less pronounced, more gentle. So it's okay to "gently support" the bass guitar this way?

    • @BillHilton
      @BillHilton  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, absolutely - and the focus is on using those low notes for, if you like, expressive purposes (ie, adding to the musical texture you're creating) rather than for functional purposes (ie, filling in a bass part in the absence of anyone else doing it). So it's not necessarily a case of "the bass has come in - stop playing bass notes!" but rather a case of making use of the freedom the bass gives you. Does that make sense?

      Yes it does, thanks!

    Brilliant - thank you! I play with acoustic guitars providing rhythm but I think the same logic applies as if you have a drummer.
    Great video. Loved the complete halt when the horns came in, then back in for the epic finale!

    Very insightful! I love how you describe the reasoning behind your choices in the context of the piece. All your videos are great and educational, but this is like a look under the hood. Knowing *why* you make decisions is often more informative and practical to know than being told things one can do, especially when playing with a band which is something I struggle with more than sounding good since I mostly play solo in my room or something. I've had a couple gigs that were imo trainwrecks (although the band told me I did alright, but that's not what I wanna aim for) because I didn't have experience with it and didn't even know how to approach the situation
    Again, all your content is top notch, but I hope to see more information about getting one's playing to mesh well with others. Because playing well and sounding good with a band can be lightyears apart

      I'm gonna need to watch this a few times over a period of a few days and maybe take some notes to let it all sink in, as there's a lot of information you covered and a lot to be explored outwards from there--
      More specifically, though, I've also always adored arpeggiation and would appreciate some tips about different arpeggiation styles and how to construct them in different genres and musical contexts, whether classical, jazzy, bluesy, ragtime, what have you. Just as some ideas, maybe not necessarily all of those specifically. If you already have a video on that, please let me know as I'm relatively new to your channel (but I'm already a subscriber who just turned the bell on after this vid and is considering becoming a patron. I'm a broke student, but I might be able to work something out)

      Really glad this is helpful for you! Really the trick to fitting in with a band is to trust your ears and remember you're playing as part of a team: usually, if someone doesn't gel well it's because they're too focussed on what they are personally playing and not paying attention to the whole sound. So stick at it, and you'll be fine. Re: Patreon, don't worry about that at all if you're broke - just remember me when you're a rock star ;) Re: arpeggiation, there's a very old tutorial here - th-cam.com/video/6fYNPvE3-gA/w-d-xo.html and this more recent one that you might find useful: th-cam.com/video/FNj74AcY4Hc/w-d-xo.html - shout if you have any questions!

    I’ve just been trying to explain to people how I was learning piano but had no idea how to play with other musicians, how there was some art to it or knack I just didn’t understand. This filled the void quite nicely, thank you for sharing your knowledge with us!

    Bill has a lot of knowledge about piano but since now i couldn't find a tutorial to teach us for example ......(all today keyboards) has the feature of ''accompaniment'' like various rhythms(pop, salsa, reggae and so on) just by playing and changing chords.
    Can you do that for us, i'am sure a lot of people will love that.

    • @BillHilton
      @BillHilton  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's an interesting one, Andreas - you're right there would be a lot of demand. The tricky thing is that my digital piano doesn't have that feature: I'll see if I can borrow one that does and come up with something...

    • @andreaschristodoulou4274
      @andreaschristodoulou4274 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, no, Bill you have misunderstand , just simply use the bass (say octaves) plus chords on your right hand or any variations of them to produce the ''rhythm'' like pop, salsa, arabic, etc, don't need the drum section, hope you understand.

      Listening back to this two and a half years later I'm kind of quite pleased with the arrangement there, but the horn samples.... not so much. I think I was just using the built-in Logic Pro brass sounds, and yes, they're kind of... striking...!

    Love the way your left hand got away from the low register once the bass was there and had that covered. Am I wrong that the lower register should mostly used on piano when it's only a pianist doing the concert (besides a few visits here and there)?
