I use the Volume (Pre-FX) envelope in Reaper. Easily lets you control the volume of everything above it and you can just CTRL+Click and draw the volume down to silent if you want to eliminate breaths and noises.
I've a voice over professional, been using Reaper since 2018, teaching myself engineering as I go. In my time with Reaper, I've never heard mention of downward expanders. is this a new thing or am I just visiting the wrong forums. almost all solutions I've seen to my queries involved a noise gate. I haven't checked yet, but does Reaper have a downward expander? I tend to to start with Reaper fx and then finish off with RX if I need to. depends on the day, the cars, the leaf blowers, etc. thank for sharing the knowledge and the joy though. I love Reaper and I love learning more things about it.
There are a couple of options within Reaper: "JS: Downward Expander" and "JS: General Dynamics." The first is simply that, while the second is, IMHO, more powerful and lets you control both downward expansion and compression from the same place - as well as being graphical.
