  • In this video, I will share information about how I record and use GPS coordinates on frames taken with a Canon EOS R6 mirrorless camera.
Despite the fact that this camera does not have a built-in GPS receiver, we can easily put down the shooting coordinates - geographical latitude and longitude for each frame separately. These are standard coordinates, so you just need to match them to the location on the map to determine where the photo was actually taken.
GPS coordinates are useful to use when you are traveling and do not want to manually fix the shooting location. Or you have found an unusual corner for a photo shoot, but there is no way to explain how to go and where it is, so you just save them on the frame and share them with your colleagues or clients.
But, and if you are a modern professional and use cross-platform applications from Adobe in your work, for example, the Adobe Photoshop Lightroom graphic editor, then you can catalog photos using GPS coordinates in it. We will also talk about this in the video, so watch it to the end.
GPS coordinates are recorded in a special extension of the digital image (if it's just metadata). This extension is called EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format- - where a lot of useful information is entered. I will give a detailed example of metadata on one frame a little later.
With this camera, we have two ways of entering GPS coordinates into photos, which are often called "geotags". The first is to additionally purchase a Canon GP-E2 GPS receiver, which is installed on the camera's hot shoe and is not cheap. For myself, I don't see the point in buying this equipment, since I can use the second way - to use a smartphone and it doesn't matter which operating system it has IOS or Android.
We will need to install a special Canon Camera Connect application on our mobile device. A detailed video about it is already on the channel, where it was told about its main features - to instantly upload files from the camera to a smartphone, for further sending to the editor or for posting on social networks and remotely control the camera, for example, to create a self-portrait. The link should appear in the upper right corner.
There are slight differences between these videos. This time we will connect the phone using Bluetooth. It is this connection that makes it possible to obtain GPS data on camera images.
The Canon Camera Connect app is available for free in the App Store and Play Store. But if you haven't installed it yet, then take your time, later in the camera itself, in the settings, there will be a QR code of the page to download. For those who are used to the old-fashioned way, links to download the application in the description.
Let's start with setting up the camera. We go to the 4th section of the menu, on 1 page. Almost always I have the "Airplane Mode" activated, which allows you to save battery power of the camera. If you are interested in finding out how to improve the energy efficiency of the Canon EOS R6, watch a video on the channel called "Increasing productivity", it is popular with viewers, so I am sure that the information in it will be useful for you as well. Now we will deliberately reduce the battery charge, because we will disable this mode. In this case, we don't have to manually turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth separately, so let's leave everything as it is and go to the Wi-Fi/Bluetooth Connection tab. Specify the connection to the smartphone. Here we agree and turn on Wi-Fi. Select "Add a device to connect", specify the operating system of your smartphone. I choose IOS. With the QR code that appears, you can scan the smartphone camera and download the application, but I already have it downloaded, so I click "OK". Here we specify "Connect via Bluetooth". Turn on Bluetooth on the camera by selecting "OK". A memo appears, we read and agree.
Go to the Canon Camera Connect app. The smartphone has detected the camera, make sure that the name matches on two devices and start registering. Creating a pair between devices. I'm pleased with how quickly everything connected.
Let's go back to the 4th section of the menu on page 1 "GPS device settings", then "GPS device selection", specify the Smartphone. You must provide permission to use the smartphone's location information in its settings.
Let's make sure everything is working correctly. We will find the "GPS" icon on the camera screen. When it is displayed constantly, then everything works correctly. If you do not see this information on your screen, then you need to use a separate "INFO" button, which increases and decreases the amount of information during shooting both on the screen and in the viewfinder. Read more about the "INFO" button in the video on setting up the touch screen, a link to the video in the description.
The location information added to the images when shooting can be checked on the Shooting Parameters information screen.
