My wife's family in Guatemala has an old single Lister & they've got it set up on a belt to run a corn grinder to make masa for tortillas, enchiladas & pupusas. The brothers fire it up once every few days & everyone in the village brings them a bushel or so of corn to grind up. They get a few quetzals for doing this & the oldest b-i-l told me that engine had been around long before he came along. I asked him if anyone ever serviced it, he said no. I wanted like hell to mess with it but in the end I left well enough alone ...but with a renewed respect for this old iron & their way of life. These are still people who pull up water from a well with a bucket & rope. They do have electricity & I did pack an electric winch in my luggage to make the job easier while I was there. Guatemala east of Ciudad de Guatemala around Gualan is gorgeous. Good simple people & I could explode on all the great food!
These engines are still made by Chinese and Indian companies realizing their necessity in 3rd world countries as affordable and simple solutions. Many small puncture shops in India have these engines to run compressors. Also many small fishing boats are installed with these engines to make the job easier.
Please remember to take safety precautions. I saw you start the engine with lose shirt. You were lucky if having court fabric with fly wheel outcome would have be even fetal.
