X was so dramatically better, yes better, than so many of their colleagues. With John and Billy slightly older and more accomplished, they had a degree of polish and musicality that kept it tighter. John has said that Billy would not let them indulge in too much of that "art house shit," and that sensibility served them well.
This is the single best American rock band of the past 40+ years. Great musicians, terrific songwriters, and even with the "punk" tag, and all that it implies (dark, angsty, angry, etc), they still maintained a sense of humor ("your phone's off the hook, but you're not"...sweet!). I've seen them many times over the years, all iterations (and the Knitters too, with guitarist Dave Alvin of the Blasters). They're getting old, and Zoom survived a bout of bladder cancer a few years back, so if you have a chance to see them live anytime soon, do yourself a favor and go. They can still rock the house!
X is one of my favorite bands ever! I love how Billy Zoom combines rockabilly licks with punk in his guitar playing. I’ve always loved punk and rockabilly music and this is a perfect combination of the two.
If people ever mention that Punk is just pure noise and is not R&R I will tell them listen to X and see for yourself ! Punk is R&R !! Maybe from another upside down universe but it is deeply rooted in Rockabilly,Rock , Surf and other styles .

She gave them their punk cred at the start. Without her, they were just another Ramones wanna-be boy band. With her, they got lyrics with a bite, and stage presence that worked for that crowd.
@@yournamehere6719Agree. Back in the day people used to claim that X would be really great if they just got rid of Exene; comparisons to Yoko Ono were common. But without Exene they would have been just another rockabilly band. Exene’s unique stage persona, voice, and brilliant lyrics raised them to another level. Saw them live at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in 1984, I think it was…the “More Fun in the New World” tour. Still one of the best rock concerts of my life.
Just incredible. Speechless.
Billy Zoom being happily, quietly brilliant is the best

Billy kept them grounded.
Art house shit > generic rockabilly
I concur as well and will really try to get up at the HOB to see them in July .👍 X 🖤🔥
@@TotinosOtherBoy mix em bro
@@TotinosOtherBoyI’d prefer rockabilly. Too artsy can be a bad thing.

.. and I did last summer 👍😉
I see them every chance I get, including this past summer. First time was in 82.
An LA immortal. Seeing them back in the 80's was to be plugged in. What a band, what a time
Right On!
I saw 'em... 80? 81? something like that. Jaysus they were great. My mind was truly blown.
The seamless perfect synthesis of Rockabilly and Punk. Yeah? Shut up and smoke!
These guys were probably the best group in the movie
Michael Graham The best group as far as talent, but FEAR made the movie what it is.
At that moment it time, yes, but Circle Jerks are still making great music 42 years later.
@@bossmann6358 Eh. They had like one OK album and that's about it for them.
@@bossmann6358 FEAR stole the show..nobody loves their audience more than FEAR! :D

I'll go somewhere else
I'll move to the couch
It's darker in the dark

I forgot you were a liar
Now it's five to twelve
Shut up and smoke

No more orange nightgowns

This is no place
To be addicted to another place
Never get to go
Don't you want me to make it
I took as long as you took
You take a lot from me
I forgot you were a thief
I want to be like her
Instead I stay nowhere
Marked down in the basement
Lousy at the bottom
A life of intermission
A life of intermission
A life of intermission

He looks a little like Bill Clinton.
