OEM AMG dealer mark ups are insane. They had the gall to tell me that aftermarket Brembo rotors are inferior to the OEM MB. Brought the Brembo pads and rotors from local suppliers and fitted it myself for a qtr of the cost at dealership. As long as you don't option the Carbon Ceramic, your wallet will be fine.
My best friend asked me to ask around at local Mercedes Benz dealerships if one of my friends and technicians could get a better cost for the set of brake rotors on his S 63 AMG. IN 2022, the rotors were about $1200 each. I told him when he went from an M5 to an Alpina B7 then to the Mercedes that even though the cost of acquisition might be okay, the cost of ownership of the M cars and the AMG cars are expensive. After a $6000 clutch replacement on the E39 M5, he left it at a repair shop in 2008 and never went back. After spending $9200 on the Alpina B7 for a total gasket replacement, he traded it in for the S63 AMG because the BMW was still leaking oil. Now the AMG is leaking oil because both vehicles end up melting the seals due to excessive heat. My M550 had the same problem after I got rid of an E60 M5. Please do your research and shop for your own parts and cultivate a relationship with a good certified German car repair shop.
I have the same car, the amplifier got wet and destroyed it. Mercedes quoted me near 2500 dollars to replace, I went to a local car hi fi shop and they replaced and installed a new amp for 700 dollars
Never own a Mercedes AMG out of warranty, that my lessoned learned advice. I know these here were general maintenance items, but if anything actually breaks in that engine it's several times that bill. Get the extended warranty from MBUSA if you buy from a MB dealer. Can add a few extra warranty years and roll it into your car payment.
Doesn't matter if you have a warranty or not. You’re not getting maintenance done such as brakes with a manufacturer warranty that's always out of pocket. Unless you bought a separate maintenance plan when you bought the car
funny thing about german engineering is that they make great powerful engines, but anything above 4cyl engine is pain in the butt to work with… people don’t realize when they buy any used german cars with low miles they think they got a sweet awesome deal! but when the repair time comes they cant afford it ! just onething to remember if your buying german car make sure you have atleast $60k saved up for maintenance and repair
Keep in mind these brakes are made to stop over 2 tons at very fast Autobahn speeds, over 150 mph. And ten times in a row. No speed limit... Still expensive though 😁
I had a similar problem while I was repairing consumer electronics. The stuff kept getting cheaper but the cost to repair kept escalating. An example, to properly service a $350 Panasonic camcorder Required 2 $600 jigs ($1200) and a PC plus special software (don't remember subscription fee). Not to mention special soldering equipment to replace parts. Another problem that came up is the tape transport came in 3 pieces, the drum, the cassette holder, and the chassis. If a gear stripped we had to buy the chassis at $130 then use the $1200 jigs to realign everything.
I have a Renntech built AMG C63s 800whp and a brake job 4 new brembo 2pc rotors and Porterfield pads $1400. Rotors have lifetime warranty and free replacement from FPC Euro. A fool and his money are quickly parted. If you pay $5000 for a brake job you are insane !
Hint: if you have a Mercedes, FCP euro is your best friend, get yourself some tools and learn how to work on your vehicles. I did transmission service, coils plugs and plenum gaskets on my wife’s Glk I think for around $250 if I remember correctly, had I taken it to Mercedes it probably would have been around $2100
Yes, with a powerful German car come massive and expensive brakes. That's just how things work over here in Europe: AMG tunes the car for 250kph or more and thus it needs upgraded suspension and brakes that can handle those speeds without fading after the first hard braking the driver does. This isn't a Ford or GM car that's been souped up to insane power yet still has bog-standard brakes, suspension and often even standard tyres.
Incredible! A friend reconditions foreign super car LED taillights that are custom built in South Korea, imported for use in Italy and installed in supercars. Owners who have too many failed LED lights are in a tough spot, wait months for an “Italian” OEM part or seek a specialist that can fix the existing part.
I guarantee you next time he stops by your shop he will need his engine mounts done 👍🏻 You could have got all these parts from fcpeuro for half of price
Not to question the wizards judgement ( seriously), but did it need rotors? When I worked at a MB dealership many moons ago, pad replacement was just part of the service. Rotors were only replaced for minimum thickness, warped or corrosion. I am seriously curious. Back in the early 2000’s, a Mercedes wasn’t too expensive to fix all things being relative.
Just a suggestion here. When you take a wheel off to do the brakes take a snapshot of the pads thru the "window" on the caliper looking to the wheel bearings IE top down to show just how thin the pads are.
I own a 2021 BMW X5 X40i. New breaks and rotors at the dealership for front and rear are around $3300. New tires are about $2000 with alignment. So $5500 dollars. It’s just the code of ownership on these vehicles. A lot of people can buy these vehicles but they can’t afford them.

Brembo's cost irrespective of what car they're on. Check out a brake job on something domestic like a Mustang Black Horse, it might surprise you. I'm guessing that (some) repair guys might charge extra for hi-po brake jobs...beyond just the exorbitant parts prices. That's pretty neat MB hotrod too.
I Traded my '17 GLE63 with 33K last week. It was on its 3rd set of tires and 2nd set of brakes. I changed the oil every 5K miles. I drove it like an old man and nothing broke on it.
Its not only the 5x multiple on AMG parts (vs regular MB) but the frequency of the wear intervals on items like brakes is 1/4 to 1/5 the mileage! Means the AMG is costing you up to 25x the cost of the standard MB on wear items in the name of "track performance"..
First time hearing Mrs Wizard as I’m new here, was familiar with the Wizard through his skinny friend with the hoopties. Must say I really like her voice and the review of the interior. Also nice to see an older Mercedes interior as I drive a 2025 model.
You can buy quality aftermarket parts that work just as great and maintenance on these cars are fairly standard as other luxury vehicles. The only additional maintenance on AMGs are proberly the differentials which are LSD and use a different fluid and MB recommends a shorter maintenance interval.
Hi Wizard. When people drive machines like that, they shouldn't be surprised by the costs to have that AMG badge. I had a customer with a high quality cylinder mower, but they still think it'll cost the normal price to repair as a standard cylinder mower. Because it has higher spec and is a bit rare, it'll cost more! Buying it is the lowest cost of owning it.
I have a Mustang GT350 with Brembo 15.5 inch 6 caliper brakes - rotor and pad replacement all the way around was about 2500. Tell me how those AMG brakes could outbrake this 'Stang?

Yes, it’s the famous 3.6 which I had for about three years before finding out about the issues with that engine. No problems until just recently when an oil leak had to be addressed. $200 for parts and $1,800 for labor! Not AMG prices, but was glad I had a service contract that took care of it. Chevy prices are bad enough!! There are no AMGs parked in my neighborhood.
I owned a CLK 5.5 AMG. Last 2 years I owned the car I spent $13,500 in maintenance. The convertible top had to be replaced, brakes, camshaft and crankshaft sensors and other items. One of the most aggravating aspects of ownership is that Mercedes didn’t support the car due to the fact that it was over 10 years old though it was low mileage, 67,000. miles. A Porsche specialist replaced the convertible roof. Mercedes told me to purchase a replacement for the cracked windshield fluid reservoir on ebay and they would install it. Very disappointing. Never again will I buy a Mercedes product!
I have a 2005 CLK55 AMG coupe ,,last two years I spent $1000 in maintenance and repairs. The two years before that I spent $500 ... The three years before that I spent $3000 , which included new front brakes , suspension arms and 16 spark plugs. Average is $643 per year,,,but I wont have to replace the front brakes , suspension and plugs for a long time. These can be a very affordable car to run if you DIY and you don't buy a convertible.
I remember when I needed brakes for my 01 E55 about 20 years ago. Back then the MB dealer wanted $1000 for the front rotors each. I shopped around online and eventually got them for $1100 for the pair. What a deal!🤣 But you are correct Wizard, that AMG tax automatically bumps up some of the same MB parts up 50%. It's a shame, because they are really great cars when maintained properly.

As with many cars though (not sure on this one) sometimes belts can be expensive to replace (not the belt itself, but the labor to get the belt on/off that can be expensive -- sort of like the old Hondas that had the timing belt-- the bulk of the labor to do the job was for removing all the stuff to get the to the timing belt but the belt and pump itself were maybe $125-$150 combined, but needed about $400 worth of labor (probably about 5 hours I think). Of course the time I had one of these ,shop rates were lower like $95 per hour so I was able to get them done for about $550 with tax, including a new water pump, but these days if you had to pay someone it would probably be more like $750 or $800 (but most companies have done away with timing belts and have gone to chains).

Hmmm I had a 2018 c63 amg. The pads were $1000 oem. Did it myself. You're telling me the belt and labor is almost $4000? Nah. Doubt it.
The cost for brakes and rotors on my scat pack widebody cost more. Dealership quoted me $7200. Just the front rotors were $3600
It’s not just Mercedes it’s mechanics in general that have gotten expensive, my Jeep Rubicon cost 3,500 for breaks it’s just crazy.
Hey Car Wizard, have you ever shopped at FCP Euro for Mercedes parts? AMG Mercedes Brembo brake kit with 2 rotors and 4 pads with sensors are $1033 for the GLC. Just sharing a source for OEM euro parts. I always enjoy your videos! It's really nice that Mrs. Wizard gets to work with you on the videos as well.
No he would rather charge people a million dollars on Parts he likes to make double his money on Parts like he does with hoovy
@@lincolnmarklt man, how do these people stay in business making profits like they do.
@@lincolnmarklt Are you okay bud? You think someone would be willing to buy the most expensive line items to make tons of profit? Stop being dense.
Most shops wont use aftermarket. The customer was considering the dealer to fix it. He has to honor the warranty for parts.
if he did that he wouldn’t be able to charge as much much for the labor. easy to slip in a few extra hundred when ur at 6k
Rarer cars have fewer aftermarket options for parts. When only one company makes the parts, they can charge whatever they want.
Brake rotos and pads is not one of those parts you talk about.

My SL55 makes me smile and that’s worth the cost. Doing my own work helps to keep the cost down but, sometimes the price of the tires every year makes my head hurt. Thank you for explaining that playing with these things is expensive.
Great video Car Wizard!
You can get the identical front brake disc from Bremb9, who makes them for Mercedes, for $455 each.
Always here when you upload, Mr. Wizard i love your videos.
Just today my dealer quoted me $3,000 Canadian for rear rotors and pads.
Rotor thickness is still great.
I got the pads for $135.00
Never ever go to a main dealer stealer.. not even for an oil change with a high end car.
dumbest comment I've ever heard. Plenty of people who own BMW and Mercedes new are servicing their cars at the dealership
@@IEATU95found the con artist bmw tech
OEM AMG dealer mark ups are insane. They had the gall to tell me that aftermarket Brembo rotors are inferior to the OEM MB. Brought the Brembo pads and rotors from local suppliers and fitted it myself for a qtr of the cost at dealership. As long as you don't option the Carbon Ceramic, your wallet will be fine.
😂the nerve to say that shit when their so called OEMS are brembo ☠️🤣
@esthetics4512 exactly!! The arrogance of the AMG tech really did me in.
Unless your rich
funny thing about german engineering is that they make great powerful engines, but anything above 4cyl engine is pain in the butt to work with… people don’t realize when they buy any used german cars with low miles they think they got a sweet awesome deal! but when the repair time comes they cant afford it ! just onething to remember if your buying german car make sure you have atleast $60k saved up for maintenance and repair
The prices for parts are absolutely ridiculous and it’s all just prices gauging….
A dude I know who's a tech at the local 3 pointed star dealer and he says, "AMG stands for Always More Gravy."
Mr wizard that is some good advice. You could get one of those for free and not be able to afford the maintenance
Agreed 💯💯💯 and man that’s a sweet whip 800whp how many miles on that set up?
@ Just over 6 years 30k miles, nothing but general maintenance.
@@GunSurgeon nice💯💯
Engineers don't build cars anymore, accountants do. Everything now is just cheap and mostly not built to last. It's a shame
I like the line of, if you have to ask how much, you probably can't afford it.
Full set of Brembo pads and rotors is over $2k, so even OE quality aftermarket is $$$$!
Pretty standard German AMG / RS / M pricing
Yes, with a powerful German car come massive and expensive brakes. That's just how things work over here in Europe: AMG tunes the car for 250kph or more and thus it needs upgraded suspension and brakes that can handle those speeds without fading after the first hard braking the driver does.
This isn't a Ford or GM car that's been souped up to insane power yet still has bog-standard brakes, suspension and often even standard tyres.
@@tjroelsma and yet you can buy the identical OEM rotors and pads fitted for 50% less at a specialist fitter.
Same for Porsche
Also rec'd a 5k estimate for just brakes on my 2020 Audi SQ7.
Incredible!
A friend reconditions foreign super car LED taillights that are custom built in South Korea, imported for use in Italy and installed in supercars. Owners who have too many failed LED lights are in a tough spot, wait months for an “Italian” OEM part or seek a specialist that can fix the existing part.
I guarantee you next time he stops by your shop he will need his engine mounts done 👍🏻
You could have got all these parts from fcpeuro for half of price
Costs as much as a camry to fix, yeah the price of a whole used Camry!
I own a European shop. Our average repair ticket is $8,000 and we’re about 40% less than the dealer on labor. Parts prices are crazy.
Door panel, door card, door decor, just a door. Who cares what some Karen thinks about such nonsense. Your content is excellent. Thanks for all both of you do.
Agree. Came here for the Wizard, not these worthless interior reviews. I wish I could skip Mrs Wizard. She should stick to arts and crafts
I kept telling those people that i know, “I have a very cheap car that it’s very expensive to maintain”. BMW X5 owner here.
Love the videos and valuable advice.
Just a quick safety suggestion.....
If you are like me, you tend to bump into
stuff when looking around and fussing under
cars, etc. Maybe consider wearing a bump cap.
In other words.....protect that beautiful chrome dome! 😂
Who would have thought an AMG Mercedes would cost a lot to maintain and repair?
For those commenting on factory parts. I hear you on aftermarket parts, but you have to be careful. Use either OE suppliers or reputable brands.
I'm sure DIY will save a ton of money as long as it's not terrible to do. I'm falling in love with this exact spec and year of GLC.
My cls 63 with 240k miles and I do all the maintenance. LOVE the driving experience of a high end mercedes. Hate getting in anything less
Great car and even better engine/transmission. Worth the money if you have it. They don’t give many issues either.
Thanks Wizard! I keep having "DAS AUTO, yaaaaah" commercial flashbacks. :o) (actor Peter Stormare, un-pimping VWs).
Mrs Wizard is really good at showing off the cars.
I have a Mustang GT350 with Brembo 15.5 inch 6 caliper brakes - rotor and pad replacement all the way around was about 2500. Tell me how those AMG brakes could outbrake this 'Stang?
The S actually has 510 hp and 516 torque
Mrs Wizard you just keep calling the door cards as they do in Germany! Don’t listen to the haters! I enjoy your interior reviews! Thank you!
My Nephew gave me a ride in his AMG sedan with the twin turbo V-8, and it’s the fastest car I ever rode in. That beast was pulling hard at160 mph and supposedly will do over 200. It makes anything I’ve ever owned look like a stone!! The fastest car I’ve ever owned is my 2017 Chevy Impala with the V-6. There are no AMGs parked in my neighborhood.
just checked on FCP euro OEM front and rear OEM is yes $5677. I would personally go with Brembo $2111.
The owner seems like the perfect customer. Understands what the car needs and doesn't hesitate to pay for it
Except the car doesn't need that. Easily could have had the same quality for 1/3rd the price.
My local dealer charges a 310$ per hour labor fee, I remember having to replace a 1 rear-left control arm and the dealer quoted over 11 grand.
Alternative: 2009 Lexus ISF $18.000, half the price on parts, good aftermarket stuff available, only ~ 40hp less. Will go on until you are bored.
Wizard says "Under the hood we have" at that instant Fancy feast for your cat commercial!
I remember when I needed brakes for my 01 E55 about 20 years ago. Back then the MB dealer wanted $1000 for the front rotors each. I shopped around online and eventually got them for $1100 for the pair. What a deal!🤣
But you are correct Wizard, that AMG tax automatically bumps up some of the same MB parts up 50%. It's a shame, because they are really great cars when maintained properly.
Wow twin turbo V8 sounds like something you don't see anymore.
PSA: GCL63 brake discs are $93 each on eBay. And they can't throw codes. Pads are similarly absurdly cheap. Even if they only lasts 30k miles it's worth it IMHO
I could explain why skimping out on eBay brake parts isn't a great idea, especially on a car like the GLC63. But instead I'd love to see someone try it and have them share the long term experience!
@@henkondemand I skimped out on my daughter's bright yellow Ford Focus. Cheap pads, cheap rotors, under $75 for everything we did the work ourselves and no issues after 30k miles. We did this ourselves and the ABS works great and the car stops well. And I drive like a maniac.
eBay brakes are just fine. If ur tracking it and want absolute performance then go with factory. U can do 4-5 brake jobs with eBay but they just last fine. I’ve run them on several cars
You don't put cheap brakes on an extremely fast car like this they will fail really fast
@@fboomerang that's a ford focus that is a slow daily driver cheap pads and rotors are fine on that but NOT AN AMG Mercedes

If you buy a high performance car that's an SUV even so very heavy, then be prepared to pay high performance prices for maintenance.
I don't understand why people buy cars based on how it looks. When you are driving it, you can't see how your car looks anyways.

BMW N63 Hot turbo is famous for issue because it's bad design so many issue because plastic and heat related issue and i think mercedes hot bi turbo will have same problems
Good Job! This and the recent Porsche turbo YT are good reminders that while you can buy these used pretty cheaply, they remain expensive cars. Of the few truly wealthy folks I know, they all have normal cars for daily drivers, their toys spend more time in warehouses or used in track days.
These are fun to watch but I would rather see more YT on cars that we peons can afford.
thanks for the info
Remember folks. When you buy a luxury car, you also buy into luxury maintenance costs and experience
It’s not necessary to spend that much money. You can go on the FCP Euro and get some good Zimmerman rotors and pads. It’s pretty easy to replace those rotors and pads on this car.
The regular GLC 63 has 470 hp the 63”S” bumps it up to 503. I did the brakes on my 2020 glc63s in Canada and it was $7400 cad for pads and rotors
Hey Wizard, love your content.
Please make a video on why it is impossible to manufacture an inexpensive sedan/car due to EPA standards. I would love to hear your thoughts on why everyone is forced to buy an SUV or Pick up truck.
I remember years ago sourcing brakes for a W210 E36. Six months wait for shipment from Germany plus rotors and pads more than 10 times normal E320 ones. Almost the cost of a whole used W210 E320 at that time
