Do you need a Light Meter? 🎥💡

- What is a Light Meter, and do you need one? That largely depends on you and what you shoot. I've never had a need to start using one until now, and I would still consider it a bit of a luxury tool for photographers, while being a bit more needed for videographers; especially those shooting indoors or with artificial lighting. I'm thinking about making a more in depth video, so stay tuned for that in the future!

That tells you the amount of light. Instead, you need one that tells you the shutter speed/ f number for a given ISO/ASA/DIN. They cost a lot more.
Any recommendations?
@@brucekhamp6859Sekonic has a few options. I’m sure you can find other great brands on B&H.
Wouldn't the reading change based on the camera?
@@brucekhamp6859sekonic L308
That’s only the half of it. It’s more necessary in flash metering. Something the most expensive Leica or such can’t do no matter how good it is & that’s such things as flash ratio & value or burst.
Decent modern cameras for 47 yrs do give you a similar reading. 35 yrs to current do it differently or more advanced it’s just you may not see the values it reads but it’s in there.
If it did spit out the lux, fc or ev or whatever, most wouldn’t do anything with that number anyway except shoot what the camera says. (: it’s a reflective meter in about a 30-40° angle. Equivalent to looking through a 70mm lens in full frame 35mm camera
Interesting! But why not just a photographic light meter? That way you can know what settings you can use and your base exposure.
Camera ISO values aren't consistent across brands, nor even in the same brand
@@mostlymessingabout which is exactly why light meters allow you to calibrate them
Never use one is these. Would definitely help with some of my shots.
That and a dedicated meter can do things even your $5k canera can't. Flash ratio, Incident, mulri light and more.
But if you don't do anything over the top outside of normal rhen you'll be fine never owning 1 as many have been pretty reliable sine 1977 in camera CDS blue cell
On the other hand, if you are in a specialty work or multiple task you may wamt dedicated spot, probe, multi flasg & Reflected and incidentally. Each one being better at doing its own job good. Or just the 1 you need.
Can you post a link to the light meter? (If we're interested in purchasing)
Thank you for answering this
Never seen this type of light meter before. Question now if you cannot add or subtract light on the subject how do you measure the cameras exposure to the LUX. Does it take in shutter, speed, iso on this type of meter?
Love ur video 😍
Cool
Finally a simple explanation, thanks
What does it have to do with color grading/temperature?
When you’re color grading, most of your work is matching shots to each other. The bulk of that is done by correcting your light levels (shadows, midtones, highlights).
The meter helps you measure the brightness of your lights on the set. When you have matching light levels, it makes it easier to match shots to each other when you’re color grading.
Oh, that is a beautiful explanation and now all of this make sense! Thank you! A normal photographer don't really know color grading. That more like a video thing
Can't I use an app that tells me how much light I'm getting since my phone also has a light meter?
❤️ love from India
I draw the comparison to why have a multi meter if you have a test light. One is a quick and dirty way to check and the other is a proper tool that will give you usable data
❤️
Can you give us a top 3 or say top 10 light meters?
But when changing the location, a change in the light is more than natural?
How do you then set the exposure?
Did that thing calcul what is the color temperature in Kelvins? Because I am whit fujifilm and it don’t the number when I take the WB personalize…
Light meter doesn't give you lumens
That's a photometric light meter, not a photographic light meter
damn i'm earlier than i thought id be
Me pausing vieeo to figure out which light meter he's using in video 😅
There is a phone app for lux meter so😅
"I need batteries" - Anthony
Have you tried a lightmeter app?
I usually use my phone
That’s not even a photographic light meter. You want one that will show you exposure at specific settings ISO, shutter, f-stop etc.
why does he look like Kevin Parry
LOL wrong one man
Looklike sus💀
I’m sorry you don’t know what you’re talking about. That is not filmmaking we use a very different type of meter. This will be dam near useless as it tells you very little usable information. And you likely won’t know how to use it properly. It’s clear you’ve never shot on film on a set before
Yeah I agree. Useless video
