A lot of people play snake because he’s kind of one of the most unique characters in the sense that a lot of his moves change his hurt boxes and very advantageous ways. Love how these vids, and how detailed your overviews are. I also wanted to point out another really cool thing about grenades that I think we all understand, but isn't explicitly said much: Grenade adds a 4th layer to disadvantage when snake is in tumble. Ordinarily, in tumble, it's like RPS. Jump, air dodge, or attack. But Snake being able to grenade allows him to avoid needing to tech anytime he's in tumble. Practically, it just falls under the similar umbrella of needing to always be wary of Snake's grenades when juggling, but it's worth noting that if snake didn't want to, he never has to tech when in tumble.
Something not mentioned that I feel *really should be* That fucking back throw… I swear to god I cannot explain this well enough but the angle it bounces people off of the ground is *brutal* for comboing into kills
I always love snake and watching good snake players that outsmart the opponent. Or just seeing people go boom! I love fighting agiqnsed em too w my main. A battle of the trappers!! Also villager video when? Lol.
Kept you waiting, huh? To be serious though, in the next Smash game, if we even do get a completely new one and not a Mario Kart 8 style port, then I personally believe that they will try to keep as many characters as legally possible. I think that after the backlash against Smash 4 for cutting characters for no reason like Wolf in particular, that unless it is EXTREMELY legally difficult, they will keep the character, so this basically includes most of, if not, all first party characters as well as a at least a good amount of third parties like the ones from Sega, Capcom, and Bandai Namco. Hell, I mean with how we can now get more than one third party character per franchise, I wouldn't be surprised if we end up getting Tails and/or Eggman, Megaman X, Yu Narukami, Chun Li, etc. in the next game. I also believe that not only will they keep most, if not all echos, I think that they will actually add even more, because it is kind of an easy cop out way of adding fan favorite characters who would feel like clones otherwise.
I personally don't have high hopes that we're going to get a "the next one", at least not under Sakurai. Ultimate was already starting to strain under the massive size of it's roster, 82 fighters is almost four whole games worth of characters, unless they're going the lazy route and re-using old assets there's no way we're going to get another game with a roster that big. Pokemon is having the same problem right now with the national dex.
@@kevingriffith6011 Smash 6 will probably follow the Ultimate path, where we'll have all the characters with similar moveset and adding new ones, since they already did the hard work of bringing everyone back, now they can focus much more on the newcomers, so Smash 6 will most probably have much more newcomers than Ultimate, easily over 100 fighters.
@@Zenitsu-zq4pj See, here's the problem with that: You can't just drop the old models and animations into the new game. The fighters aren't "already done", they have to be re-built basically from the ground up for every single game: The only things they don't have to do is imagine a moveset for them. When a hypothetical Switch 2 comes out, would people really tolerate a game that looks like it came from the last generaton's hardware? Probably not, but that's what porting the old models would do.
@@kevingriffith6011 Yes, but they probably have tools and programs to automate and facilitate this process, otherwise they wouldn't be able to add all those newcomers + all the old characters from previous games in Ultimate in so little time. Of course it's not simple nor easy at all, but I'm sure they already have everything planned for the next Smash for the "Switch 2", including an estimated release date.
@@Zenitsu-zq4pj All I'm saying is that realistically if we're going to get more smash content it's probably going to be in a "Smash Ultimate, Complete edition" or something like that. Adding on to ultimate directly rather than making a new smash title. Making all of ultimate again from scratch is unrealistic. Smash ultimate got made unreasonably quickly by all reports (2 and a half years from conception, lightning speed for a project of such a scale and only possible thanks to backup from multiple major studios. Something I don't see happening again any time soon, especially considering the cost of such an endeavor)
Snake's Classic Mode {for the Challenges} was such a PAIN to do, but I got to 9.9. easily with him without losing a single life even if I've NEVER played with him before. I LOVE the Metal Gear Solid music in Ultimate, like Encounter, Yell 'Dead Cell' and Cavern among others, though, the first being THE BOSS where you fight her possessing Zero Suit Samus. The Boss was the first Legend Spirit I had obtained and I just fell in love with the SNAKE EATER remix! Also, my beloved Sephiroth amiibo easily destroyed a Snake Level 5 CPU during their fight at Bridge of Eldin's Omega Stage, by PERFECT SHIELDING against his explosives and letting him get hit by his own grenades and get a Star KO instead when Snake was on his last Stock. That was INSANE!
"M.Fucking STEVE *-Vine Boom-*" I wasen't ready for that. Yeah Snake is a powerhouse, I've got a kid at my locals that's 5 years younger than everyone else and last time he swooped he's a monster, but he also admits that Snake carries him a bit.
This is why I love Snake. Not sure if it’s because I’m a Snake main (and that the game doesn’t match you up against the same character often) but I don’t regularly see many people playing Snake. I play at around 10-13million gsp and I’ve seen about 4/5 other Snakes in the last 6 months. Keeping in mind the game has terrible algorithms for match ups I swear I fight the same group of people of similar GSP all the time.
you've done 32 of these and still havent reached zss. honestly i feel like shes the most compelling character in this context bc on paper shes broken, but in practice shes nearly the opposite. and at one point in ult it felt like everyone played her, like joker.
bo2 music? based Snake is sick. Love everything about his design. Although I will say, I'm surprised you didn't mention his down throw at all, the amount of fear that puts into people is very much note-worthy to say the least.
Is you reasoning on why everyone plays snake because people specifically know and choose snake for being a mu check and having fundies or people coincidentally playing snake for other reasons is a byproduct of snake being a mu check and having fundies? Because i think most people just play snake because hes cool or visually appealing or smth.
I thought his grenades have a uniquely smaller blast-radius for himself? Meaning, if both characters are exactly equal distance from the explosion, it can hit Snakes enemy but not him. Or was that something from Brawl/Sm4sh/some weird dream?
PLEASE DO WHY NO ONE PLAYS LINK! I love your videos and he is another trapper that has tons of potential but is not widely used like Snake/Rob/Pacman 😢
I would love to see that video too. If I had to guess, I'd say a lot of his best normals have brutally long end lag, making him committal and unsafe, while his best trapping abilities require lots of practice and big brain plays to pull off
@@davidlane1248 he is good but it is a case of why bother with Link when there are other easier options? I think he has a unique toolset that could be amazing in the right hands tho
Link has worse frame data and a worse disadvantage across the board compared to those three characters. Pac-Man, snake, and Rob have all have good close quarter combat options (as he discusses snakes in this video) where as link has none. All 3 of those characters have better recoveries then link as well, leaning into the better disadvantage. To sum it up link is a traditional zoner with traditional zoner weaknesses, whereas the three characters you named are zoners who don’t have those traditional zoner weaknesses.
@@RedBookBag420 totally! That is my theory as to why no one seems to play Link. There are some Link players getting results in regionals and online tournaments, but it is clear that we Link players are character loyalists.
Funny how this video popped up. I literally just picked up Snake a couple weeks ago, and plan on duo maining him with Sephiroth. Originally planned on solo maining Sephiroth, but realized that I stop focusing whenever I tried to solo main a character. I do better rotating between a couple characters as it prevents my brain treating the game like a chore. Came back from playing different fighting games got me into the mindset to reset my brain on how I view characters. Planned on having a character for each range, and different playstyles. Sephiroth was mid-range, and covered the swordie playstyles. (Sorry Ridley, Byleth, and many more. Forcing myself to stick to one swordlike character!) I'm still currently trying to figure out a close range fighter. One that won't die instantly (sorry Pichu, it was fun!). One that can force the opponents to do things (sorry old pal Meta Knight!). Fox, Sheik, Falcon, all solid picks but not super attached to those characters and view them as "the faces of competitive smash", so that's an emotional barrier I have to get over if I were to pick any of those 3. Inkling, Sonic, Yoshi are pretty likely due to gameplay and having some emotional attachment to them, but I have to play them more to find out if the negatives about them comes true, or if they are even a problem. However, considering about making exceptions for Lucario, Ryu, Kazuya, and Ridley (Ridley still has the most hours currently, and my emotions love to pick him the most frequently if I let my emotions pick a character). It's very hard to totally rule these out. I also haven't given Kirby a fair shot competitively. They all play in a weird way compared to other characters too. However, long range/projectile focused was much easier to figure out. Links will make me swap between them all the time, so I just can't allow myself to play one. Samus is meh, except charge shot, but at that point I'd rather play Lucario. Most other zoners I like at least a bit as a character (I mean, literally everyone is fun to play in the roster), and have above average fun gameplay since it's more than just pressing forward and attack, but nothing that stands out. Notable exception is Duck Hunt, because I don't care about that character in the slightest, but hot dang is that gameplay among the most fun. You're always throwing stuff out, and the can allows for so many fun situations. So process of elimination, I was very close to finding out my long range character. Rosalina & Luma was very tempting for a while, until I ran into Snake. Lumas die so easily, so for some players/matchups it's unlikely to ever get to use her unique mechanic at all. Snake however, gets to have separated from him all game. I play chess as my other competitive game, so hearing people say Snake is like "chess in smash" I thought it was overhyped, and then would be laughing too much at his explosions whenever I did play him. Though after really sitting down with him, it's hard to go back. There's always something to think about, and the focus on controlling multiple areas on the map, willingness to sacrifice to get a better position, and always thinking about what your opponent is doing (more so than a lot of other characters) made me really see the comparison. Now back in Brawl, I didn't like Snake because I assumed he was just yet another shallow gritty tough guy. Since then I realized that his games are more in-depth and cover some interesting subjects, but they also strike an amazing balance by being extremely goofy at the same time (still haven't played one yet though). This is shown really well in how he's presented in smash, gameplay is heavy on thinking, but those explosions are hilarious and silly. We'll see how long Snake lasts, but right now it's hard to see what could cause me to stop playing Snake. Especially since a lot of people used to come to me for matchup experience with Snake, even though at the time I did not practice him when Ultimate was new. Yet was kicking my competitive friend's butts with him. He's just one of those day 1 naturally good with characters just like Sephiroth was.

I like demo/soldier in tf2 cuz I like projectiles, Snake is maybe the closest thing to that for me for satisfying those projectile niches
Metal Gear is my favorite game series ever. I hope he makes it into the next smash.
Why wouldn't he? I think it'd be awesome if they brought more characters from MGS, like Raiden or Gray Fox

When I fight a Snake as Samus, I try to snuff out his grenade control with lots of small charge shots
Love how these vids, and how detailed your overviews are.
I also wanted to point out another really cool thing about grenades that I think we all understand, but isn't explicitly said much:
Grenade adds a 4th layer to disadvantage when snake is in tumble.
Something not mentioned that I feel *really should be*
That fucking back throw… I swear to god I cannot explain this well enough but the angle it bounces people off of the ground is *brutal* for comboing into kills

Colonel decided to take matters in his own hands
BO2 menu music in the background got me HELLA nostalgic
The classic combo vid for brawl is why everyone I know plays snake
"M.Fucking STEVE *-Vine Boom-*" I wasen't ready for that.
Yeah Snake is a powerhouse, I've got a kid at my locals that's 5 years younger than everyone else and last time he swooped he's a monster, but he also admits that Snake carries him a bit.

What’s Yoshi’s use status?
This is why I love Snake. Not sure if it’s because I’m a Snake main (and that the game doesn’t match you up against the same character often) but I don’t regularly see many people playing Snake. I play at around 10-13million gsp and I’ve seen about 4/5 other Snakes in the last 6 months. Keeping in mind the game has terrible algorithms for match ups I swear I fight the same group of people of similar GSP all the time.
I love that you picked Black Ops 2 music for him!

Vars wasn't even in elementary school when they announced snake for Brawl in 2005
Is you reasoning on why everyone plays snake because people specifically know and choose snake for being a mu check and having fundies or people coincidentally playing snake for other reasons is a byproduct of snake being a mu check and having fundies? Because i think most people just play snake because hes cool or visually appealing or smth.

Cause he's a kitchen sink zoner, he's thick, good close range and recovery.

I thought his grenades have a uniquely smaller blast-radius for himself? Meaning, if both characters are exactly equal distance from the explosion, it can hit Snakes enemy but not him.

Excuse me?
Pac Man has a high ratio amount of players in every Region.

Request to do why everyone plays Palutena
Forcing myself to stick to one swordlike character!)
I'm still currently trying to figure out a close range fighter.
He's just one of those day 1 naturally good with characters just like Sephiroth was.
. thick ass essay. bt i fl u. hope u gt good with snake. feels
