I wish they explained it but Chika's sign reads "Otoshi dama" [new years gift usually money]. The kanji used for "dama" 「玉」means ball so the sign literally says "year ball". Chika's mom, being a hilarious smart@$$ literally gives her a ball. Knowing the context makes this scene funnier

also I don't think shiitake would've managed to get it that clean with the time of a single brush stroke considering it's fur and everything

I didnt quite understand this though. Do Japanese kids get their allowance at the beginning of the year? Like in a lump sum or something? I used to get it weekly.
I dunno about Japanese kids
I'm Chinese. And to us Chinese, we celebrate Lunar New Year. And whenever it's Lunar New Year, we Chinese kids get something called "Angpao" from our parents and our aunts/uncles(basically, married relatives) "Angpao" literally means red pack in the Hokkien dialect. Inside the "angpao" is money. We stop getting "angpao" when we get married because that is a status of being grown up
Of course, we do get our weekly allowance from our parents. But the money we receive from the "angpao" given to us from our parents is something special we get every Lunar New Year
Maybe Japanese kids are also like that. I dunno actually. But I'm pretty sure no parent would give a lump sum of money at the beginning of the year cuz that's just insane
