I know this is an old post but did you check the capacitor on the coil, these really need changing it makes the special coils work great once new caps are installed

My Bally Skateball does the same thing with the slingshots. I had to gap mine a littler wider then normal as well. I think it's just a common problem with the games of that age...don't quote me though..I have original boards, not the rottendogs...
