I’m new to the clarinet world. Ive been playing flute for most of my life but then suddenly stopped 5+yrs ago haven’t played or picked up an instrument since. Now as a 36 yr old ive been wanting to get back into music again because its been something ive been missing but this time i want to learn something new and the clarinet is something that has been on my mind of an instrument i want to learn. I love watching these master class videos.
If you are able to find a teacher who studied with Joe Allard and knows his method for single-lip embouchure very well, I would strongly suggest you learn that method of embouchure and they compare it to what Mr. Guy recommends. It is quite different from what Mr. Guy teaches and gives results very like double-lip embouchure. I realize that Mr. Guy is very accomplished and obviously gets good results with his embouchure, but I think the Allard embouchure method provides more flexibility, among a variety of other benefits, for most or all of the same reasons that those who use double-lip embouchure consider this method to be superior.
