About:
Cecil Alexander is a guitarist, composer, and arranger from Muskegon, MI. He graduated from Berklee College of Music in 2016 with a B.M. in Jazz Composition. He is a recent graduate (2019) of the Jazz Performance M.M. program at William Paterson University. In 2016, he co-founded the folk-rock group Visen, which released its first EP, Shoulder Deep, in 2017. Cecil was the 1st place winner of the 2017 Wilson Center Jazz Guitar Competition and the 2018 Lee Ritenour Six String Theory Competition. As of recently, Cecil was one of 3 finalists in the 2019 Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz International Guitar Competition. Cecil has recorded/performed with Bill Charlap, Antonio Hart, Lee Pearson, Luis Perdomo, Nathan East, and Steve LaSpina. Some of his greatest influences include Charlie Parker, Joe Henderson, Grant Green, and John Coltrane. As of Fall 2021, Cecil started a teaching position at Berklee College of Music as Assistant Professor of Guitar. Cecil recently was recently signed to Heartcore Records, a Berlin-based label founded by legendary guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel.

Great video and verbal explanation is clear and concise. I've tired a little picking like George and it never worked but with you explanation and video, I have a much better idea of what I should be doing for that so it will be worth trying. Thank you! BTW, love your playing.

Hey there Mr. Alexander, my name is Justin and I am a punk rock guitar player. I happened upon this video and just wanted to say how I like how you played this video out! I’ve been trying to find help with a better picking technique, cuz mine SUX, big time! Anyways, I found it helpful that you slowed the video so I could see what you were doing. I haven’t been progressing in all the years I’ve been playing, mostly because I wasn’t taking it as seriously as I should have. Now that I am, it’s helped to see how other players techniques work for them. I hold my pick to tight I think and often drop it.. frustrating as hell! Anyway thank you for the lesson🙏

Great technique and great mastery of it, Cecil. I explored it a lot a few years ago....along with Benson, rock players like Schon and John Sykes do this, but I never could get accustomed to my fingers catching on the strings and making noise, especially at high gain. How Schon and Sykes do it is beyond me. I ended up going with something more "standard" like Gary Moore and DiMeola.

A good sound. What is the make and model of your guitar?
How would you damp the strings if there was distortion with that picking angle?
I also use reverse grip. I didn’t copy anyone. I just started that way. George Benson is one of my heroes, and I have to say I was thrilled to find out that he used reverse grip also.

Clean
I do this but its my natural way due to being double jointed in the thumb. Its actually really frustrating. Great for certain techniques but a massive road block for others. Im trying to unlearn it but its hard after 20+ years
Crossing the chasm to this approach - one thing I notice is that, since the palm is not on the bridge, much more fret-hand muting is required. Any thoughts on that, Cecil (or anyone else using this approach)?
Those were my thoughts as well. I like my palm resting on the bridge since it acts like a dampener when I’m playing across the higher strings. When I play on the lower three my fretting hand mostly takes care of the higher strings not vibrating
Why does that pick angle produce such a fat, round, popping sound? I have tried the angle and absolutely love the sound, but I got a bit of pain in my forearm. I'm not suggesting that would happen with anyone else. I mostly play finger style.

What gauge strings you using here?
I noticed Sebastien Giniaux uses the reverse angle pick technique when I saw him at DIJ for the first time live up close- interesting…..
Giniaux is a cello player and approaches guitar with a lot of that influence.
