    Neck pickup with overdrive:
    Fender 3:15
    Suhr 6:45
Also, came to hear the guitars but forgot about that and just listened to your playing for the rest of the vid. Very diverse.

Just purchased a 2014 Suhr Standard with Lollar Dirty Blonde Pickups = 50's Tone Heaven. I can now get my: SRV, David Gilmour, Nile Rodgers, & Mark Knopfler Tones. It made me: put my 78 Fender Stratocaster guitar - immediately Up for Sale. Suhr made Significant Improvements over the Fender. One Love from NYC.

It is literally a knockoff…a high end knockoff if they were a Chinese company people would be pooping on them. I don’t like PRS but at least he did his own thing.

I think the „problem” with Suhr is the ML standards pickups. I had them in my Suhr but I just couldn’t bond with them. They are very mid heavy and when played clean it was hard to get that classic Fender sparkle. They worked great with crunchy/gainy tones but cleans were not very fenderish. I think they should try v63 (old name is ML classics). They are definitely less mid oriented and airy

Both guitars sounded great I thought the Fender sounded a little bit more warm to my ears but I'd be happy with either guitar... fantastic playing by the way...

I like the fender more. It sounded like it covered a wider tonal range in the higher frequencies. Started to second guess myself towards the end though, with that sweet playing style with those high triads and vibrato on the Suhr.

The Strat seems to have more character. The Suhr sounds a bit sterile to me.

I’ve felt the same thing. Wonderfully built guitars... and I’ve had three... but dead sounding to me and had no breath. Took me three to learn, even when building one with vintagey specs like a six-point bridge.

  • @mtitus27

Prefer the Fender for all tones. Fuller, more musical, and more harmonics. Greasier with gain, just has that tone. The Suhr is a little more flat.

I’d be amazed if you’re able to get 60-cycle hum from either of these guitars Jack seeing as you were in the UK and we don’t have 60-cycle mains power. 😜
Great demo as always though. 😃

Suhr has SSCII which eliminates 60 cycle hum apparently.

  • @jakeah1175

I have a suhr for the locking tuners and lack of string tree. It’s the most stable trem I’ve ever had as a result. That said the pickups sound a little thinner, and more scratchy (occasionally harsh above the 12th if I don’t watch my attack). Can I order Fender CS with locking tuners and no string tree??

Important to note that SH signature model pick ups are a bit hotter. Even Scott turns his tone down to 7-8. He loves super hot pick ups.
Other thing to consider is that Scott is particular about his tone in how it sounds live with a full band. The extra bite and highs cut through any mix.

Fender is definitely richer across the board... Very hard to duplicate that sound and broad range, and obviously that what others are trying to do, right? The Suhr is a crisper sounding guitar, and if that's what you're looking for, it certainly does all that... I'm impressed! I've been pretty blessed to own electric and acoustic guitars that have a lot more to offer than I do as a player, but even so, I will grab the one that gives me the sound, tone, and harmonics I want for the particular song I want to sing. Oh, I'm a wannabee singer also, so there is that. Thank you for sharing!!!

  • @SeattleMartin

Great playing as always! The Strat sounded more like a 'vintage' instrument to my ears, while the Suhr sounded more modern, and a bit fuller sounding. The Suhr also sounded, well, more accurate, with spot-on intonation and no buzzing from the frets, which I noticed in the Fender. (But that's part of the charm of vintage-style instruments, a bit of wonkiness with the frets and intonation that's off a wee bit.) With the Suhr you can get similar tones, but those tones will come from a guitar that is crafted to modern standards. I can't say for sure that I preferred one guitar over the other (as far as sound goes), but I would rather play the Suhr, because of the excellent neck, the thinner neck heel, and the pickups, which are much quieter that the Fenders. Both are fine guitars, though.

  • @MrBostechman
    @MrBostechman 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Both sound great, just two different tones. The fender has all the classic tone that makes it a fender. The Suhr has a more modern tone with a bit more bite. When I hear that tone out of the strap I instantly picture a Strat in my head and associated with that sound. So it’s a bit of a psychological thing too. The Suhr is a great guitar and I can see where it might be a tad more versatile as well. Strat through a clean amp or slightly overdriven and the Suhr for more overdriven tones.

What amp/pedals? Suhr is a workhorse: no hum (live
In an area with power issues and need a brown box), stays in tune, and the SH bridge is already modded to work. Imagine the SH is pretty close to what suhr made for Jeff Beck when he was with fender? But looking for a classic strat with those SRV and Hendrix tones and that strat fits then bill. Heavy strings timed to Eb. Gnarly sounding tomatillo pickups! Nice playing man!

  • @teknokont
    @teknokont 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I am a keyboard player, so keep that in mind when reading my comment. To my ears Fender has a more vintage vibe, great for overdriven and fuzz tones. That Fender wants a plexi or an orange , great for dirty tones. I think Suhr has a great definition, open clean sound, great for cleans and pick ups have higher headroom i guess, And I really love modern crunch sound Suhr produces, if I had budget I would buy both.

Why do none of these comparisons ever give you a quick A/B between setups? I had to retain the sound of the strat *in my head* for 2 minutes before I heard the Suhr. It’s impossible to get an real idea of the differences unless you A/B them in chunks. I had to skip back and forth in your video just to hear the difference side by side and even then, I would never land on identical setups.
In the future, can you do something like: clean neck Strat then clean neck Suhr then clean bridge Strat closely followed by clean bridge Suhr and so on? It’s not like it’s hard to do (much less watchable but far more useful).

I have had both and kept my Fender CS Strat. Had a Suhr classic “S”. I never measured the body but the Suhr body felt bigger and thicker than the Fender. Also the Suhr has stainless steel frets that take getting used to. The Suhr also felt too perfect if that makes sense. One of the things that people say about them is they are all perfect and that may be the case but in my mind that means they are all the same. While looking for my Suhr they all seemed to be in the 8lb range too so a bit heavier than a CS Fender. For my taste I’ll keep my Fender. But Pete Thorn and Ian Thornley seem to make the Suhr work - and they are Monster Players !!

Why limit it to only Suhr? don't you retail the Vigier Classic rock? or the Expert series? 54, 63 and Texas blues? they all are Strat style type of guitars that easily compete with the best. Equipped with DiMarzio pups.
I checked your website, and you do have a Vigier Expert Classic Rock in retro white which is totally gorgeous!!!
I don't know much about "amber" pickups though, but I trust Vigier. I am sure those are top notch.
Next time you do a side by side comparison, please get that Classic Rock a spin. It really deserves it.

Roscoe p Coltrane not to mention the contoured heel! Fenders neck joints are so dumb... there’s no reason for it to be so uncomfortable! I bought an American pro strat a year ago, and after 8 months it needed a level and crown. SS frets are a no brainer!

    • @roscoepcoltrane23

Spencer Bladyka I totally agree. I’ve got two strats that need a refret and a Les Paul. One of the strats has had a refret but I think he used the softest frets made because it didn’t take long before they needed to be leveled and crowned. I’ve had two level and crown jobs done on it and now it needs frets again.

Some squire would sound good as well. Squishy glassy sound, no big deal

I can't buy a Suhr: 1, production line guitars are as expensive as second hand Fender Custom Shop guitars, and 2, the radius doesn't work for me.

The tone of suhr strat is, shadow of fender stratocaster!!!

The Suhr fretboard looks drier than a desert wtf

I think the Fender blows it away on looks and sound. The quiet Suhr pickups don't have the quack, and that headstock - no thank you. But I would not spend $4K on a custom shop. I can make my own out of a Squier and rewire it with new pickups and make it sound 90%+ as good for 1/8 the price.

you should have done it without showing which guitar you were playing - I have a feeling peoples ears are being highly influenced by their eyes

They both sound amazing but the Strat sounds more like a Strat. Easy choice for me.

I love these videos, I love the guitars, your playing is lovely but I can't hear what you are saying because your jean shorts are so loud.

I‘d take the Suhr...but the price point...

Im not a fan of the ML pickups, but they make the Suhr take gain better and nicer. The Fender pups sound more vintage clean, but farty with gain. Id grab the Suhr with some V60LPs or regular V60s

It's hard to beat a Fender ( At its own Thing)...With that said, Fender could wipe out all of the imitators if they'd offer the compound radius neck as standard as well as the vintage 9.5 neck...
