Thanks for the very helpful video. I got a bunch of giant sunflowers from the grocery store and now they are dry. Instead of dumping them I decided to save the seeds and try to grow them next year in my yard in Texas.
We have a few hundred acres of sunflowers near us and when they are blooming, it is the greatest section of highway to drive by... These plants are amazing!
Synergy is new to me but absolutely beautiful and productive. Thanks for your video and showing how to save the seeds. Last year I bought this flower at Lowes. It was infested with spider mites. I took a chance and cut the dried flowers and the seeds were abundant. Gorgeous and plentiful this year. 👏
Thank you for taking the time to create this very helpful video. This year I planted the four foot tall sunflowers with smaller blooms, 4-5 inches, which are still blooming and the large head sunflowers which died off early. I plan to plant the smaller sunflowers in rows in the back of the garden next year. Thank you again for the helpful tips in saving the seeds!!!
I love autumn beauties, I grow them every year in my garden. Rite now I have 12. I also save the seeds . I usually have the yellow finches come around and feed in them
My dad was an avid, master gardener. Back in the day when I was a kid, his garden always included sunflowers. At harvest time, he cut them off and placed them upside down on newspapers in the greenhouse until they dried out. He built a wooden frame - like a wooden box but with no bottom - and put a metal screen on top. Not chicken wire - that wasn’t sturdy enough. A good, metal screen. Stapled-nailed it down on top of the wooden box. When it was time, we put on gloves and scraped the sunflower heads on top of the metal screening and it took all the seeds out for us. We dreaded doing it - but now, he has passed on, and I am so grateful for the memory and instruction of harvesting seeds. The price of black oiled sunflower seeds has gone ridiculously high. I will replicate my dad’s harvest method and start growing our own for bird seed. Reply to this comment if you want more info on the screen! I’m hoping that handy thing is still around and if so, I’ll use it. Otherwise, will make one of our own. Oh - if you get a lot of mess in with the seeds - we used a small fan on low speed to blow it out of the seeds - or a colander to help separate. Enjoyed your video :-) thanks for sharing. You remind me a bit of my dad and his love of gardening. It’s amazing how smart our parents get as we get older 😊😇
Thanks so much for your video. Really appreciate it. As for which sunflower is my favourite - that's an impossible question. I love them all!! They are all a piece of sunshine that brighten the days. 🌻
My questions are: 1 I have watch alot of videos before yours. No one said how dry to let them get a I had several out I different stages some to me were super dry almost a beige color. 2. They all say to watch or rinse them they let them dry a day or so. What do you think is the best way? My friend gave me some Dwraf sunflower seeds. I absolutely love. They grow like a little shrub or bush.
I made a boo-boo i should have watch this sooner… I left them together and dried out over the winter are they still any good? Can I pick them now and plant them still? 😢
I was planning to take my tallest sunflower plant in my garden and use its seeds for next year so I can make the tallest plants possible. Do i just take them out and dry them or will they expire if i wait 6 months for spring time,
Thanks for sharing, Donna! 🌱 Saving seeds is a great way to keep your garden sustainable year after year. ♻️ It's also ideal for preserving plant varieties that you may not be able to find in stores or nurseries. 🌻🍅🌶️ Happy gardening! 🌷🍃
Ive harvested some sunflower but they are hollow inside because the so the seeds are paper thin and almost transparent. How can I get more suitable sunflower seeds for planting?
I’m trying to find out when’s the right time to harvest mammoth sunflowers. I’ve seen some videos from other people they harvest it too early? The colour of their sunflower seeds are still a bit pale green..while yours are the first ones I’ve seen that were dark in colours which is reassuring for me coz I’ve harvested mine when the seeds are already dark/ black in colours. Also I’ve noticed if we harvest it too early ( still greenish) the shell of the seeds are hollow. Please I’d appreciate it if you can give me your opinion. I’ve been growing Russian Mammoth sunflowers for two consecutive years now with the main purpose of providing seeds for the birds at wintertime. The tallest I had here was about 11.5ft, and a bit slimmer amongst the rest ( got knocked down by the wind last night) .The thickest one was about 46.5mm in diameter with the height of 8ft and obviously has got the biggest flower that measures 11.2inches across. But this year I want to save some for next year’s sowing and I want to make sure I’m doing it right . Anyway, I’d like to thank you for making that video, it’s helped some people like me learn a little bit about sunflowers.
Let nature tell you. Wait until the plant pretty much starts dying off. You can cover the head with some pantyhose, so the birds don't get them. You can check them each week by jamming your finger in there to grab a seed or 2.
🌻Hi Cookie! Don't worry, we're here to help you out. Sunflowers are a great addition to any garden! Here's a quick tip: they need full sun and well-draining soil. Make sure to also water them regularly. Hope this helps! 🌞🌱
+cae ri Hey cae ri, You don’t have to wait a full year. If you live in an area close to the equator you probably could grow them year round. Thanks for your support! 🌻🌻
Hey Chezly Lopez You can certainly try and sprouted it, but it probably won't germinate. You'll know that the seeds are ready when they are darker and the middle almost looks like it is dry and brittle. I always experiment with things, so maybe give it a shot. Nature has a way of surprising us sometimes.
+Chezly Lopez most likely the seed is immature. It most likely need to still grow on the flower. You can just plant it and see if it germinates. Do you have any other seeds?

We got seeds from an immature sunflower (unknowingly), so its color is grayish not black. if i'd plant the seeds, would it still sprout & grow?
