I am one of those hard headed people who has just not been able to get the basics of clawhammer into my hand. I started as a child with rolls and just could not make it happen. Thank you for explaining it so well. I think I finally get it. Best online breakdown of clawhammer basics!
As a newbie banjo player coming from a guitar background, I've looked around for so many basic explanations of what clawhammer is in order to correct my bad habit of strumming the banjo like a guitar, and as other mentioned, you simply did a great job. Thank you!
I agree @Ma vie dans le vent - I’ve play guitar for 34 years and banjo now for 3 days🤣. It still seems counterintuitive, but this and a few are videos are so well explained. I can’t wait to forget about my right hand end experience autopilot so I can pay attention to the left hand.
I'm doin' it! First time, really, since the accident (tears welling). Previously dedicated to learning 3-finger style with picks, after severely injuring my forefinger I'm coming back here for review and do this for a while. Thank God (quite literally) I can use just the middle & thumb in this style leaving out use of the pureed tip of my forefinger missing 2/3 of the bone tuft and healing for a long time. God bless you for your genuine service. I'm doin' it!
Hello from Colorado. I just retired and learning to play the banjo now. I want to tell you how much your lessons are helping me, thank you for explaining and showing the right hand drills up close. You play very well.👍👍
Thank you! 😄 I was definitely trying to get ahead of myself and this was a good lesson. Very helpful 😊

THANK YOU FOR THESE LESSONS........I STARTED SEPT 1 ST, 2019.......THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU....I WILL STAY WITH UR LESSONS....U R A GREAT TEACH!!!!!!!!
Haha yeah, will take some practice of course. Just started with banjo, playing guitar as well but more electric bluesy/rock stuff, and just getting the clawhammer stuff going will take time. Prefer without a thumb pick so far, gives a more mellow sound.
Hi, greetings from Scotland, just to say I love your videos - you are an excellent teacher. Also think you have a great banjo there, keep up good work, Kenny
Gooday mate?I`ve started to improve ALREADY using Mandy`s lessons! BEST EVER LESSONS!sending for her exercise discs asap! Replies to emails fantastic! THANKS I was just about to give up before these lessons! AL
Just bought a banjo. Really good tutorial. Hopefully I can get the hang of this. Nice shirt too! I go to Florida state. Keep on doing what you do! God bless!
thanks a bundle. i went from guitar to banjo and i thought it would be easy since i am a good finger picker on guitar. only i was unaware that you use 2 fingers and a thumb on banjo. i was used to 3 fingers and a thumb on guitar. i had to velcro the other finger down at first to keep it out of the way. keep the lessons coming i subscribed. lots of teachers out there but a lot of them just want to show off ho well they can "noodle" on it. your vid makes it was to learn and not feel intimidated.
I was inspired with the way you said to start out.I'm trying this clawhammer style as I also started with the bluegrass picking style but can't seem to get that bouncy rythim sound.I also like your other videos where you tear up the banjo. Thanks and keep up the lessons for us greenhorns
Oh I LOVE fiddle, wish I had one to play with. Best of luck. If you get a banjo be sure and sign up at the website for lots of free lessons. I've only got a few on here.
Hi, Thanks for posting these lessons. I wondered if you do a lesson for the tune you play at 3:40? and what the tune is called, it sounds great. Thanks.
Love the easy to follow tutorial, as a complete beginner would you recommend starting with this clawhammer or to concentrate on 3 finger picking first ? Thanks
Really it's a preference thing. I would say that clawhammer is a bit more forgiving in terms of accuracy though. I have an ebook and video lessons available if you are interested in purchasing. If not I have lots of free vids and there is a plethora of free information to be found around the internet. Best wishes to you! -Mandy
BanjoLemonade thanks for taking the time to reply, I know how it gets trying to reply to everyone, much appreciated 👍🏻 take it easy over there. I'll have a look at your e books 📚I'm sticking with my 3 finger picking 🙏😀
They are both equally hard - easy. If you don't like much finger picking though I would definitely go with clawhammer. The hardest part for you I'm guessing will be the thumb note, since it is completely different than anything you would experience playing guitar.
Hi I've been playing guitar for thirty years and I've got the urge to take up banjo instead as I love the sound ! I just don't know whether to start with claw hammer or blue grass style ? Also when I play guitar I mostly use a pick but if I do play finger style I just use my thumb and first finger so I think my right hand will be the hardest thing for me to change ! I'm attracted to claw hammer as it doesn't need the finger picks,is it easier than bluegrass style? Thanks for the video.
Howdy there Just recently found yer videos, Great Videos, I was curious if you give lessons via Zoom? Thank You for all yer Great videos!! Johnny Cornbread
I actually have tried that ,Thanks got one that will work but still hooks to much of the G string to really get a soft strike if needed .oh it will come sooner or later .
Sophia Nag Rizzi - when you say fluent I'm not sure what you mean. In a years time I felt comfortable playing around 10 tunes and playing along with my husband on guitar. Hope this helps.
You are very welcome! I just want to pass it on. I have a free section on my site banjolemonadedotcom where you can see a bunch more vids if you want to join. Best of luck to you.
Hello! I just wanna thank you for your lessons. I've been thinking about star banjo lessons for a while and I started watching your channel and I went for it! I bought a banjo and I'm learning so much from you. Thank you! Also, I bought a mini banjo (cause due to the quarantine everything is closed and the mini was the one I could afford) do you think I can keep practicing with the mini and then later transition to a regular size?
Hey Roana, I’m sorry but I’m not really sure what a mini banjo is? You can definitely learn a “Clawhammer” type stroke on basically any stringed instrument, so a short answer without knowing for sure is yes.
I can get into playing no problem it`s just I have big hands from working mechanics , Try to get a drop thumb going is so hard and try finding a thumb pick that fits right without cutting off circulation , I might even re invent the thumb pick for my situation -I`m addicted to Banjo Now only been playing for few months ,I like your method but the G string feels like a knife edge I have to figure something out .
Hey Catherine, you don’t have to be a member of paypal, they take all major credit cards. Or you can send me a check in the mail. Send me an email - banjolemonade@icloud.com
I can't seem to keep anchoring my thumb on the fifth string except for the time for it to pick that string, all the other notes my thumb goes up and also for some reason my hand won't stay clenched like yours while playing, I guess I better just keep practicing that .....good videos though
Hey Red Beard - yes and no, lol. I’m full right now with my one on one lessons and working on a huge project. The project I will announce in December (stick around you will like it). For one-on-one lessons though may be after the first of the year before I open it back up to new folks.
How can I ask this? I literally just got my banjo today, and broke 2 strings tuning lol :(Anyways, when you get to actually "playing" per say, are you picking the same string you are fretting? Its hard to tell, or does the sound ring out as your strumming all strings?
+Larie Day - sorry for the delayed answer to this! Short answer yes. The sound definitely rings out as you play all the strings. But in the beginning whenever you are fretting a string you are also plucking that string as well. Later on you will vary that, but for now always yes. The other strings are ringing out all the time too, unless you are trying to hit a single note (part one of the stroke). Thanks for watching - Mandy
Oh without the picks no problem really I just can`t get enough sound from my thumb in between strings got big hands , Can play all day just using my index finger doing -- Bumdity / Clawhammer
I'm a new banjo girl...I'm older so thankyou for your lessons. I'll be with you for more lessons ❤

Howdy Donnie,
How are you progressing with the banjo now..
I read your comment and was wondering..
I am having a slow start myself..
Thank you BanjoLemonade! You have explained this technique better than anybody on the net.
Best wishes from Germany
Totally agree! I was going to say that! Sorry it took me two years later to find this!
"You can go so far if you just start out right, slow and easy" Amen to that! Great Lesson!
Thanks for watching!
I had trouble getting that beat so I changed it up to strum 5 then brush and strum 1 and it worked. Thank you, you're a good teacher young lady.
Now I got it. Strike 1, brush, pluck, then brush
Thanks for getting us beginners going.

If you have a plastic thumbpick you can put it in hot water for a couple of seconds, then cold water, that might work (never tried it).
Good Lesson! thank you.
Tom Tomasi - Thank you Tom!

Not sure if it's an advantage or disadvantage being a guitar player. Waiting for my first Banjo, very excited.

Do I have to do it barefingered like you're doing or is this something fingerpicks are also used for?
svp. vos doigts de la main droite ils grattent quelles cordes ?
How long did it take you to learn the banjo and become "fluent" with it? I wanna start!
Sophia Nag Rizzi - when you say fluent I'm not sure what you mean. In a years time I felt comfortable playing around 10 tunes and playing along with my husband on guitar. Hope this helps.
Someone gave me a resonator banjo, but clawhammer seems to to be all about them open back banjos. How much does open back vs resonator matter?
Thanks
Take the resonator off, problem solved. Don’t matter one bit, long as you got 5 strings you are good. 👍
I have a vintage Frames Contessa banjo with 22 frets. Is the lessons going to be the same?
Hey, yes as long as you have 5 strings you are good :-)
