    As I understand, the reason cars are shipped from the factory with higher air pressure is to avoid, or at least reduce, deformation of the tires after long periods parked. It takes weeks from the time the car is manufactured to the time the customer takes ownership.
    This was more noticeable before covid craziness when cars would take weeks and even months parked at the dealership before they were sold.
    The dealership is supposed to set the correct PSI before they deliver the car to the new owner.

    My sweet spot is 27.5 PSI with BFG K02 285/60/18, D Load. OME Shocks & Medium Duty Springs, 2” Lift. 65,000 miles on the tires and still tread left. Zero accessories except a significantly lighter Magnaflow exhaust and lighter wheels. Smooth and silk (kinda). Mostly drive round in circles in Manhattan and Brooklyn with occasional highway and off road ventures. My mechanic will sometimes return the car with 32PSI. My teeth and brain start to rattle, more than usual. Incredible difference with only a 3-4PSI change. Great vid as always!

    What brand gauge do you use my guy? I'm using the brass Slime brand one but it doesn't have a hose. I'm considering buying the Joe's Racing one as it's highly rated. I got scammed buying a fake "AstroAI" one on Amazon which wasn't accurate and I had a cheap digital "Michelin" digital gauge I brought from Ross that wasn't accurate either. Aviation Gauges are the best but are extremely expensive. They come with an official certificate of calibration that actually means something. I tend to like exactly 31psi cold on my GX as I feel it absorbs bumps better as we have horrible roads in the greater St. Louis Missouri area for the most part.

    Thanks for the rationale. The notorious PSO question. I had mentioned in another video of yours. I put new tires on my new to me GX460. They were a more all terrain tire bit same size as stock. I put my PDInat 32. It rides like a "Lexus" Someone tried to tell me the ftint tired looked low. They are at 32 PSI. "Well I'd bump them up" ok thanks but good.

    I have a 2016 GX with only a rack and KO2 265 65 18 tires, after performing a chalk test multiple times, the ideal tire pressure is 45 PSI. At 35 PSI like you suggest, fails the chalk test.

  • @jeffreycormier3864

    What if the 32 psi is for the EPA and fuel economy? Does airing down give you a better ride with worse fuel efficiency?

    • @LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD
      @LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Best pressure is 32 psi. Airing down will lengthen tread footprint for more traction... it will not make the ride more comfortable... that is a mythological misconception

      raise it up a bit to account for the extra weight preloading the car's tires... ✌️ We are at 34-35psi with bumper, skids, sliders added for reference.

    Just keep in mind that I think LT tires need more pressure than a comparable P rated tire to keep the same load rating. A guide I saw showed that for a suv or pickup tire rated at 35 psi would need 45 psi in an LT tire to maintain the same capacity.

    Please help me out sir I really respect your opinion I become a recent subscriber. Can you please tell me what lightweight bumper you would recommend. I'm leaning towards aluminum and my off-roading will be to a minimum but I do want to have a winch. And if I do that do I stay with the regular front shocks and if not what do you recommend. Other than that I'm not going to do any rails at this time or underneath skid plates.. I appreciate your opinion.. thank you very much.. and after watching this video I went checked my new tires which are all season and they have 36 PSI so I'm going to do the recommended psi by you and Lexus. I have a 2015 GX 460 with 71000 mi I live up by lake Tahoe in the snow country here in California. So most of my driving will be Street and snow. And I do admire your off-roading and tell it like it is attitude. And you're helpful with your knowledge and I appreciate that.

    Interesting - in the NE - when i get in the GX it will say 31 or so. After driving 5 or more miles i observed they are now a mix of 36 and 37. If the ideal PSI is 32 then we would need to start off at a lower point.

    • @LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD
      @LexusGX460-OFF-ROAD ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No you have it correct, 32 psi COLD. As you drive the air will heat up and expand 3-5 psi. This is normal and the engineers always account for this which is why they specify to set the pressure cold/moringing time 😃

      Yes. The sticker psi is the propert psi designated by a team of experienced automotive engineers. Set it to 32 psi cold. You will notice a difference, you are 6 psi over inflated... it doesn't take much to induce the basketball effect 😀

      @Bill Balleza No. Some people did tests online and higher psi for mpgs has been pretty much disproven. Modern cars are already under govt pressure to get the highest mpgs. Higher psi will simply make the ride worse... the exception to this is to account for extra vehicle weight/load...

    To say you should use the pressure on the doorjamb all the time on and off road is ridiculous. The tire itself has a pressure range. The amount of pressure needed is determined by the amount weight applied to the tire and the rating of the tire. The only way to determine the best on-road pressure is the chalk test. You may find that each tire could require a different pressure. Also many people (like me) use “E” rated tires and you certainly would not use the doorjamb pressures on a tire's max rated of 80 psi. For off-road you would only use the doorjamb ratings if you are on dirt trails like in this video (you could drive a passenger car using on-road tires). If you are on a trail that has rocks and/or sand you certainly do not want use 30+ psi. If you are using factory pressures on a rocky trail you take the chance puncturing the tire and will have limited traction. If you are in a sandy environment (sandy trails/dunes) you certainly will not get far unless you air down. Again, to tell people you can go anywhere using OEM tire pressures is RIDICULOUS!
