Song is about the last stand of the swiss guard in the Vatican during the sacking of Rome in 1527, the fan video shows footage about the crusades a few centuries earlier and is incredibly misleading.
@@Hallstat72 Nothing wrong with Deus Vult! I doubt there is an intention of shifting blame or having an agenda to frame muslims, it is just unfortunate that this video got so much spread among the non-reddit-meme-visiting people whom probably should stick with the live version of this instead :/

The Holy Roman Empire lead by Charles V was in conflict with France. After defeating France, Charles had run out of money to pay his army, so the army was directed to Rome to steal treasure and kidnap Pope Clement VII for ransom because the pope had gone behind Charles' back and struck a peace agreement with France in case the war had not gone in Charles' favor. However, one of the army's commanders suffered a stroke, and the other was killed during the assault on the city walls. With their employer not paying them, and with their commanders gone ("abandoned by their lords"), the army went wild and launched an 8 month rampage of looting, rape, and murder which reduced Rome's population from around 51,000 to around 10,000. This became know as the Sack of Rome. "The 189 in the service of heaven" are the 189 Swiss mercenaries who were part of the Pope's personal bodyguard as the Swiss Guard. Lacking natural resources to trade, Switzerland's chief export at that time was its elite military mercenaries who were renown and highly sought after because of their prowess and courage in battle and because, unlike many mercenaries who would abandon or turn against their employers when thing got tough, the Swiss were steadfastly loyal to their employers. These particular men were recruited from the Catholic region of Switzerland, so protecting the pope was a religious duty as well as part of their warrior's sense of honor ("for the faith, for the art of the sword"). 147 of the Swiss Guard made a stand in the Teutonic cemetery in the Vatican to hold back the pursuing invaders to buy enough time for 42 of the guards to escort the pope ("Under guard of 42") to the heavily fortified Castel St. Angelo via the raised passage the Passetto di Borgo ("along a secret avenue"). The last members of the guards who fought at the cemetery withdrew to the steps of St. Peter's Basilica where they were overwhelmed and killed ("gave their lives on the steps to heaven"). That's the version in the song. I think the official version is that all 189 of the guards initially made the stand in the cemetery. When there were only 42 of them left alive, and they could no longer hold that position, they fell back to the steps of the basilica where most of the 42 were killed. The few remaining survivors then moved to block the Passeto di Borgo itself. To buy as much time as possible, rather than trying to make a stationary defense that would have been immediately been overrun, they made a fighting withdrawal being pushed farther and farther back along the passage but slowing down the attackers so much that they couldn't catch the pope before he reached the safety of the Castel St. Angelo. More of the guards died while doing this, but some made it all the way to the castel and survived. You're watching a fan made video, and the TH-camr who made it explained that he couldn't find any movies about the Sack of Rome, so he used these clips instead.
