Honestly, the scene near the end where Ernest is crying over the fate of his dog Rimshot has always stayed with me as kind of brilliant acting. It's so stupid and goofy (and you know it's going to be okay because it's a movie), but it's so genuinely sad at the same time. When you hear the dog barking it's actually emotionally engaging because of Jim Varney's setup for it.
I think a lot of people consider this the best Ernest movie because it took more advantage of the fact Jim Varney wasn't just a goof with a very expressive face he was actually a highly trained actor. Ernest is a little more human in this movie, we see him scared, brave, happy, sad, etc. He does this in other movies too but it's more predictable in those movies. For example there are sad scenes in Ernest Goes to Camp, but they're very predictable and it's limited to one sequence. The way this movie is paced and scripted I think we see more range in the character.
Another facet of Scared Stupid is I think it does a better job of making Ernest out to be sympathetic. Again the other movies do this too (I think Ernest goes to Camp is probably its equal), but something about the way this movie does it is more effective imho.

This was one of my favorite Halloween movies growing up. I didn't see it until it came out on VHS and when it did I was 6 years old. I believe that this was also my very first Ernest movie to watch ever! I haven't seen all of the Ernest movies, but this one has a special place in my heart. I found the movie to be completely silly and I loved all of Ernest's personas. But, also getting to see Eartha Kitt along side Jim Varney was awesome! I remember seeing her as Cat-woman from re-runs of the original Batman t.v. series and I LOVED her! She was so slick and cool. I loved her voice too! And of course as I got older, the Disney channel would play this throughout October so then my mom wouldn't have to rent it for me. Rimshot....LOVE this dog so much! Great movie and a must see for kiddos nowadays.

Trantor the Troll traumatized me BADLY when I was a child, he terrified me so much that I didn't want to watch the movie again.
Then years later when I was watching a video on horror movie jumpscares and they put THAT scene from Ernest Scared Stupid (when he's on the little girl's bedside) and no joke, I freaked out so badly and was on the verge of bursting into tears (I know it's embarrassing).
But I give thanks to the Nostalgia Critic for making that horrifying moment into one of the funniest moments I saw, it's when he adds "They're Eating Her and Then They're Going to Eat Me. OH MY GOOOOOOOOOOD!!!" scene from Troll 2.
I kinda still have those feelings but I'll always remember that joke so I can just laugh at his expense, oh and there's the "Bumper Sandwich" scene he he he. 🤣
I hope Disney + adds this movie in the near future.

It’s an accent thing... UK, Aussies and Bostonians have a non-rhotic accent which means they leave off the “r “ sound ( or at least de-stress it ) of most words ending in “r” but strangely the accent has evolved to accidentally include it in words that end in vowels that are followed by words that start with vowels. It’s called an “intrusive r”

We really should have had way more scary kid movies in the 90s ... getting scared young increases bravery later in life, and the majority of big horror writers became big thanks to the scary stories they were shown or told as they were kids.
