Today we cleaned bare rooted Geraniums and fuchsias, trailing petunias, ready for storing over winter. We also took cuttings to root over winter. Episode 359. Music Emerald Seas By Aaron Kenny.
Hi Cliff and Diane, really good to see propagating done well, the tips and reminder to start now is a wise move before letting it get too late. Have a good week. Always look forward to your videos. Take care.
Our pleasure lonegunwomen, I always try to get these plant sorted before the days get too short. Although a bit behind this year. Take care regards from us both.
Thank you for another week- just love this! Every year I try a little something new from the overwintering prep and propagating tips that I learn from Cliff and Diane, and every year my success grows. And it is such a comforting way to spend this time of fading light and cold- giving something to look forward to! Like each installment they load here- something hopeful, growing, to look forward to.
I agree wholeheartedly with your comment. For some reason this Autumn seems more lonely, even with work to be done I notice the Bluebirds left much earlier than usual, so too the Hummingbirds. Although I have up to 400 Redwing Blackbirds, swarms don't make up for the soft calls of the Western Bluebirds. I feel something in the air that makes me feel isolated and almost afraid ~ I hope you don't feel the same. Keep warm and carry on!
Hello Cliff and Diane ~ oh I love this video, just in time for the Autumn chill and shorter days when I wonder "what can I do today?" Thank you, once again, for the inspiration and tutorial, although I couldn't grow a garden this summer I do have a lot of geraniums to sort out. We're having 28 degrees Fahrenheit and snow on Wednesday here in Colorado, so thank you again for helping me save all my plants! Have a lovely week ahead
Hi Cliff and lovely Diane as you probably know this is something val does as she has far better results than I do. And like you say saves a good bit of money the next season .
Hi Bill & Val, nice to know Val still overwintering the plants. Like you say It does save you money, and will give you bigger plants and know vine weevil. Take care regards from us both.
🙏🥀Hello Cliff & Diane I just switched on TH-cam watching gardening video on geranium I’m watching first time your video fantastic really good idea saving the geraniums and replanting them storing them in winter. It’s going to save lots of money I usually throw all my hanging basket with a lot’s of geraniums. Thank you so much for a good idea you have really inspired me Cliff has someone ever told you? You sound very much like Geoff Hamilton on BBC Gardeners world years ago very sad he passed away Mr Hamilton inspired me a lot Market, I’m going to subscribe showed regular how to cutting pruning and crafting now a days BBC don’t show such things . I’ve been in UK from Malawi Africa over 60 years I have learn a lot gardening and about pruning cutting and Grafting but never winter storing I’m going to subscribe your program. Hopefully I’ll get updated regularly from you. Keep it up have a nice Christmas and winter. See you next spring.Rām🥀🙏🥀
Thanks Ram and welcome to our channel, and thanks for subscribing. It was a shame to have thrown the plants away in the past. Its a little bit of work to clean and replant them, when the weather gets cold do cover with plenty of fleece. We have never used any heat over winter. I did like the late Geoff Hamilton he was a real gardener. Thanks for watching regards Cliff.
I enjoyed watching this! I think it gets too beastly cold here 🇨🇦 to do that. I reckon you would need a heated greenhouse. I always feel a bit wretched when I put the Geraniums in the compost bin! I have never seen you find a vine weevil, what action would you take if you found one? Klaus
Thanks Klaus, Its a shame you are not able to save your geraniums, a heated greenhouse would not be viable for a few cuttings. If I found a vine weevils I would give the weevils and compost for the chickens to sort out. Regards Cliff.
Hi Cliff, thank you so much for your fantastic advice. I love your channel. Can I ask, with the overwintered geraniums and cuttings, do you water them at all once in the greenhouse or leave them completely dry until Spring? Also, here in Dublin my geraniums and nemesia still look great and are still in bloom but should I take up regardless? Many thanks Tina (Dublin, Ireland ☘️)
Thanks Tina, I take the cuttings into moist compost as normal, If we have a few sunny days I lightly spray with water to stop them drying out. The geraniums tend to leave on the dry side until spring. It might sound a bit harsh but you do need to lift and store the geraniums and nemesia before the harsh frost. Thanks for watching regards Cliff.
@CastleHillGarden Hi Cliff, thank you for replying and for your great advice. It's good to know, that way I can save some beautiful geraniums and make some more through cuttings and hopefully they'll get through winter (I'll use fleece to keep them warm too). Many thanks again Cliff, take care. Tina (Dublin ☘️)
Yes Helen provided there is a window. As the weather gets colder cover with fleece. We have no heat in our greenhouse and I cover the same regards Cliff.
Hi TheNiiiNjAClan, the plant is quite tender. I think the best thing you could do, is take indoors and treat as a houseplant give maximum light possible and don't overwater regards Cliff.
Always learn so much from your videos! God bless!
Love your videos Cliff and Diane. Every minute I watch I learn something. Thank you
Our pleasure nazislam, thanks for watching regards from us both.

Will all the cuttings survive in an unheated shed ?
Yes Helen provided there is a window. As the weather gets colder cover with fleece. We have no heat in our greenhouse and I cover the same regards Cliff.
@CastleHillGarden Thank-you for replying, yes i will do that .
Cliff I have a citronella plant (potted) where should I over winter it…no greenhouse or root cellar….??
