I have this model, so far love it , it is a computer sewing machine so the rest time which is minimal is needed, this machine is well built not made of plastic inside components which makes it a stronger build. This is my second Pfaff I have owned and for projects, repairs it's great and I will sometimes be using the machine for 6 hr a day if not longer with no issues. I am not a quilter or a bag maker for that you should get an industrial machine which would be again not made with plastic inside . Thanks for the lesson it was informative
The IDT is a dual feed not a walking foot, they are different. The semi automatic needle threader doesn’t normally like small needles. The reverse button locking on is handy with the light to let you know it is activated. The “rest’ notification although a nuisance would either be machine problem or user error, would need the shop mechanic to check it out under warranty.
I know what you mean about getting on and sewing straight away 😆 I find the newer machines are fussier to work with. I recently purchased a semi-straight stitch machine & I love it. I just bought this machine last year and yes the "need to rest" pisses me off too. I still have my mechanical Babylock Pro which I absolutely loved but it was getting tired. I too don't think ill use all the fancy stitches either but its nice to have them. This is my first computerized machine so I'm adjusting to that. I do like the IDT foot feature. I was torn between this machine and another babylock but I wanted to give Pfaff a try. So far I've sewn a few garments on it,I'm beginning to adjust to the new features and I think with time im going to love it too
Are you using metal bobbins? Since I went back to the recommended plastic ones I haven't had issues. My dealer said the metal can mess with the magnets in side
Good to see this review. I just bought one and have had it just over a week. The extra feature I would have liked is the automatic cutter, but I would have had to move up to the Ambition 620 for that. I'm not so much bothered by the things you don't like, but I get it about not retaining your settings. That would be a pain. My issues: I find when threading, it doesn't want to catch in the take-up leaver; back stitch (and the auto start/stop) are in an awkward place - hard to see, easy to hit by accident. I would have preferred they be higher, on the front, where the symbols for them are. My biggest beef, is the dual feed foot (the reason I bough this machine) and that it's not handling quilting well. It's pushing the top layer of fabric and puckering it. I don't know if I"m doing something wrong and the sales guy is less than helpful. The manual talks about using setting 4 or 5 of for the pressure of the presser foot. Frankly, none of the setting seem to make a difference. A friend has a much older model with the same dual feed and her's in the "N" normal position was better than mine. Not impressed and am unsure I will keep it. Thanks, BTW, for talking about the "tack" feature! I didn't realize it had that and I would totally use it. I had it on another machine.
@@seasonallyproductive It was with 2 layers of quilting cotton with batting in between. It was pushing the top layer of fabric and distorting the quilt, I even had it spray basted. I do recall trying all the settings but need to go back and try again. The dual feed what why I bought the machine, so I hope it works...
Hi. I don't own a Pfaff, but have a newer Husqvarna Viking which you may already be aware of is owned by the same company as Pfaff. I have yet to receive this message, but understand from the Viking/Pfaff owners Facebook page that the newer machines have this safety feature to prevent the motor from burning out--tends to happen when you are sewing over heavier fabrics. There are factors which could be causing the motor to feel stressed (i.e. type of needle being used), but it would not hurt to call your dealer just to make sure that there are not any issues especially since it has happened more than once and with it being so new. Also, having the warranty is great--my machine needed a repair which was covered by the warranty which would have been a couple hundred out of pocket. Enjoy your machine--I have never sewn on a Pfaff, but hear they are wonderful machines!
Thanks so much for your comment! Sometimes it is happening over heavier seams, but then other times happens at the beginning of a project with basic material. Some of it might have to do with the needle, for sure! I'll try be better at using proper needles for the job (switching seems so annoying when it's just a quick job). I might call the dealer, too! 🙂
I sewed with the pfaff 1475 CD for 28 years I can tell you, (as a sewing technician) it is the best domestic machine in the world, and I have tried some machine, however the new machines are 'no longer have the same technology all to evolve, I lost my machine because of a small engine, and the part is not even available or even used, so I have to buy one ... nice problem which to choose ? thank you for giving your impression of ambition 610 I will take it into account when, on my next shopping trip😁
My mother purchased a Pfaff Creative 1471 around 1988/89 and a Creative 1465CD about a year later. She has used them since then. The 1471 was recently passed down to me, but it is no longer working. We think it is the motherboard as it was working perfectly one afternoon, then I turned it off to make dinner and it would not turn back on. So now I am shopping for a new Pfaff. My mom and I are taking a road trip next month to test some out and decide which one I will buy. Thank you for the review, as it is really helping me decide which Pfaff I want next.
I would like to tell you that this is one of the best TH-cam videos I have seen. You did an excellent job of explaining things clearly. I just got mine this past Tuesday, so I’m still on a pretty steep learning curve, even though I am a well seasoned sewer. You answered several questions for me. Also, I am experiencing some of the same frustrations you mentioned. The “machine resting” message came as a total surprise and cracked me up!!! (I said to my machine: “Honey, you better get well rested quickly, because we’ve got work to do!!!”) Thank you for your excellent work. I appreciate your time.
Thank you for the kind comment! After taking her in to the dealer to be looked at, I was told to only use plastic bobbins - I guess the metal ones mess with the magnetism in the computer system. I haven't had near as many issues since I switched. Enjoy!
So I have sewn with both brother and singer and pfaff is by far the nicer machine. If your machine is saying it needs to rest pretty regularly, that means something is wrong. The first place to check is the base plate. If you use the automatic trimmer then some times threads can get caught under there and that will trip the "rest" function. It happens to prevent you from breaking a needle or ruining the machine. While the base plate is off remove the bobbin case (if you can) then press the cutting button and watch the little snip hook slide out, and check for random threads. Also, if you have sewn any fluffier fabric (even some knits) you will want to clean out that bobbin area. I use a large plush brush and a smaller eye shadow brush to gently sweep out the lower areas to be sure that they are dust/lint/thread free. You can also (very judiciously) use canned air, though you will need to re-oil after doing so, so don't use that often. If you are still getting that rest notification fairly often, then take the machine back to your quilt shop and have them take a look at it, as it should not happen very often. I've been sewing on my main pfaff machine for 2 years and have only gotten that notification a handle of times, so getting it every time you sew means something is not right. Good luck! I see you've had the machine a few months, so I hope you are liking it. :)
Could you show how you wind the bobbin via the needle? I've followed the manual for my 620 but its too tight and won't wind :( it'd be great to see a demonstration! Thanks for the videos
Which pfaff model comes with an automatic thread cutter and basic utility stitches straight , button hole, zig zag and some decorative stitches . Automatic thread cutter is a must for me now.
The rest issue was a mother board issue that Pfaff put out without major emphasis. I bought a 920 out of desperation to replace my 30+ year-old 1473 (no part available) and had over 6 months of issues back and forth to where I bought it. AND it's COVID! Finally the repair guy went hunting for a notification and found it. Frustrating experience but I've moved and now have a great dealer who took my machine last summer and fixed what the other dealer messed up.
Shooooooot. Thanks so much for the info. I wish I had known that while it was still on warranty! However, after I stopped using metal bobbins, things have been working quite nicely
I couldn't believe the first time I turned off my machine (not a Pfaff) and it reset to stitch 0 (straight stitch), 3.5 width, 2.4 length when I turned it back on. Are you kidding me? With all the advanced stuff today you can't remember the last settings just before I turned the machine off? Too bad we don't manufacture anytihng in this country anymore, I would definitely bring the electronic part of sewing machine up to date. I do agree with you on the mechanical machine preference, give me a mechanical walking foot machine with cylinder bed any day over any electronic machine on the market.
The tack button is the lock stitch for the beginning and end of a seam. You do it manually when you go forward, back, and forward when starting and stopping. It is just faster using the button.
What a good video. I am looking for a new machine since my current one is starting to go to the repair shop more often. I do make bags in addition to my quillting. The "Need to Rest " bothers me, but the building in walking foot is awesome. Can you change needle position? Not sure if I missed this.
Hi, I just purchased 630 n I love it, yes, the machine needs to rest ha ha, couldn’t believe it at first but it just lasts for about thirty seconds and then it resets. Don’t like the automatic threader which has broken already. Just started to quilt but the fabric underneath is bunching up even though I’ve pin basted, do you think the pressure needs to be lowered to make it a little tighter. I would buy this again tho. Thanks for your review.
When I took the machine to my dealer they said to quit using the metal bobbins - something about a magnet. Since then, the machine has only needed to rest when going through bulk! I really dont use the auto threader but your dealer may be able to warranty that. As for the bunching, I would make sure the walking foot is engaged and the top thread is all the way in the tension disk and take up lever. Good luck and thanks for your comment!
m0ther0ne I just noticed you have a top load bobbin. It is not like mine. I looked up your manual, I don’t think it does. But on some front load bobbins they do have that feature if using a clear bobbin ( I've owned two Creative Pfaffs)
Hello, thanks for your review. Do you know the maximum stitches per minute of the Ambition 610? I am considering upgrading from a basic Singer machine for another machine that is faster (at least 1000 SPM).
Now that you've had the machine for some time, do you like it any better? I'm looking at getting this one or the Designer Jade 35. I just can't decide :(
Hi Tiffany. Since figuring out the "machine needs to rest" issue, I do love this machine. I'm not familiar with the Designer Jade you mentioned. I think my next machine will be an industrial, but this Pfaff is still a good choice that I will use for a very very long time. I would say forever, but the technology and computerization likely won't last the way mechanical machines do
@@seasonallyproductive thank you so much for your response! I have one last question if you don't mind and it's keeping me from hitting that checkout button... when you start sewing, do you have to hold the threads? I have an industrial Pfaff at work and I know they're great machines, I just want something more modern and hi-tech for the house. I'd prefer something where I didn't have to hold the thread and also an auto backstitch when I start to lock in my thread would be fantastic lol
I will say that holding the threads is a good practice for any machine, and the biggest variable would be the fabric you're working with. That being said, I've never had the need to hold or pull them back while starting a seam, unless they were short and I was afraid the needle would come untreated
Tiffany Prevatt only machines with top and bobbin thread snips do not require you to hold the threads at the start of a stitch sequence. I just purchased the Pfaff Ambition 620. It's a dream! I not only don't have to hold the threads, it doesn't even seem to matter where the threads are. The needle thread can be above or below the PF and I can't even see the bobbin thread. The technology prevents the threads from pulling out of the needle. It's awesome.
@@seasonallyproductive Thank you! Your video was super helpful! I picked up my own Ambition 610 this weekend and have already finished my first quilt top! :)
Use the gadget fffor holding your needle when changing a needle. It has different thickness at each end. If sewing bulky Sean’s etch the gadget goes in front of the fabric that you are sewing. Watch a video to show you what I mean. You will not get the overload message up if you use the gadget.
Hi Naty. I use my 610 for garment sewing, mainly. It is set up for such. As for freemotion, I'm actually not sure. There's a ton of quilting stitches and I want to say it is possible, but I would check with your dealer to be sure
Where do you find your metal bobbins that fit Pfaff? The plastic ones than came with my 610 broke as soon as I needed to fill them. Would appreciate specific part number!
Hey, I had the same problem. I just don't fill them as much now. I also picked up a compatible set from my quilt shop and they seem to be stronger. I had to quit using the metal bobbins because they were causing the machine to glitch
I have this machine, and I have the same dislikes as you, but I also hate the way reverse stitch works, it takes one stitch forward before reversing and one stitch back when you tap it to fo forward. This means you have to stop one stitch before you reverse and vis versa.

Thanks for the great video! Question - does the 610 notify you when your bobbin is low?
No it doesn't
@@seasonallyproductive Thank you! Your video was super helpful! I picked up my own Ambition 610 this weekend and have already finished my first quilt top! :)
Use the gadget fffor holding your needle when changing a needle. It has different thickness at each end. If sewing bulky Sean’s etch the gadget goes in front of the fabric that you are sewing. Watch a video to show you what I mean. You will not get the overload message up if you use the gadget.
Pfaff 610, 620, 630 they have a freemotion? And they have posibilty for plate for straight sewing? Sorry for may english.
Yes! That does take some getting used to
Hi !Just bought this machine and I can't even ....raise the needle!! I press the appropriate button and nothing happens. Why?? Any suggestion?. 🤔 Thank you very much ( the screen says raise the neddle....)
When the screen says to raise the needle you must do so manually with the hand wheel. Remember to only turn it towards you (as a rule)
@@seasonallyproductive ...wow, at last I could raise the needle, I thank you so much! I started to think an electronic machine was too much a challenge for me, let's hope it won't defeat me🤗 🌹🌹🌹 Greetings from the Alps 🐻🐮🐎
@@ottie1954 hehe. I had the same trouble with it when I first brought mine home! Happy sewing my friend!
@@seasonallyproductive .....yes, instructions could be a bit more precise, strange but true 🤔. Old machines were easier to use. I will go on trying my luck again with patience 🙄. Thanks again and happy sewing to you too! 🐝
@@ottie1954 agreed. The mechanical ones don't leave you much choice with how to do things!
Hallo from Greece! Ihave the ambition 620 for a year witch is my dream machine!! ... But I cannot wind the bobbin through the needle! I do not know what I do wrong ! Can you please make a small video how you do it. I would appreciate it!! Here in Greece they do not know much details how to use complicated machines they just sell them ☹️ everything I know about this machine is from heirloomcreations on utube but the nice lady does not show this detail although i kindly asked her!
Congratulations on your new machine! I have a video planned for just that!
Thank you very much!!!💟💟💟💟💟
Hi Kate! Just wanted to send a couple of words about the "history" of my sewing....trouble 🙀😳 I contacted the seller of the e-shop and in the end I decided to go ahead and ask for the refund, because they have not been very fair. Better close the business with tricky people! Unfortunately, what could have been a moment of happines is becoming a nightmare....Have a n ice week-end my friend and I suppose the adventure will go on 😊🤔😶😕🦉
Oh that's too bad. At least they're offering a refund. I hope to see you comment some wins very soon!
@@seasonallyproductive I also hope to get out of this trouble soon and far from these people. All my projects are waiting, but the enthusiasm is gone 😕
@@ottie1954 oh that is too bad! Take a mental break from it until you're ready to go again
@@seasonallyproductive I really appreciate your friendly advice 🤗 When I am back to creativity, I will try to sew something from the "Global Fashion Workshop". Have you ever heard about it? It is a russian lady, tailor since more than 40 years, who posts videos teaching how to create with or without a pattern, creating from everybody's measures. I follow the Italian channel, but discovered she also has one in English. She is an amazing woman, revealing many useful tricks 😊
@@ottie1954 I'll have to check this out! Thanks so much for the tip
Lol, si la machine dit qu'il lui faut une pause c'est pour éviter que les circuits chauffent et que ça grille la machine
