I feel like you should go into Shadow Generations not expecting it to play like Sonic Generations. If you do that I feel like you’re just setting yourself up for failure since they’re trying to differentiate Shadow’s movement from Sonic’s.
@@Charizardslash 1. The engine you’re referring to has been around long before Frontiers. 2. Why wouldn’t they use the updated version of their engine to develop Shadow Generations? It seems pretty simple to use the strictly better engine to make a game. 3. You realize the drop dash is in there because it’s in the game right? Go actually play Sonic Generations and oh-! Look! Drop-dash. They gave Sonic the drop dash as a brand new skill with the release of Shadow Generations (something they’re known for doing with remakes like Ghost for Sonic Colors.) 11:59 You can fast travel to each location and level through the pause menu. Going from level to level really isn't boring if you don't make it boring. All you have to do is explore and find them once.
No one is calling Sonic Colors, Unleashed. and Mania a "Good step". Especially not in the context that they're referring to Frontiers too. Frontiers was "A good step" because it had ambition and the characters actually sounded like they were supposed too, for the first time in a decade. The first time since Unleashed that it actually took itself seriously with a threat with actual weight. It helps to understand the context of each of these games. The context to consider for Mania, is as part of the bloody nose Sega of Japan got after failing miserably with Forces, the success of Mania, and the success of the Paramount movie. If you follow the behind the scenes stuff w/ Sega, you should know just how awful their mandates and demands are. Rise of Lyric was a sabotage of the highest order. The context of Frontiers was a game director's final chance to make something, and make something while the execs weren't paying attention. This allowed Kishimoto to completely catapult the game into an open world environment, and bring-in a completely new writing team. It wasn't a game his team was ready to make, but the feeling of shaking rust off and creating something beyond a single project was palpable. The DLC releases after the game's release, as well as the amount of direct interaction Kishimoto had with fans on twitter, getting direct feedback, prove this out. Lastly, Shadow Generations. It's a $40 game bundled with a Remaster of a beloved game. Forces expected full price for Sonic Forces, a shorter game with less replayability. Shadow as a character hasn't existed in the Sonic Franchise since 06. Sega needed to reintroduce the character to new and old fans, and do so before Paramount put a different Shadow in their heads. That's why the story (a bit of a bummer for me) was so mid. It only existed to bring folks up on what they need to know as we enter this next era of Sonic. My expectations were blown away. See, you don't really know where things are going until you've got two data points. Disney makes Force Awakens. It's a nothing movie, but it feels like Star Wars. You don't know how the rest of the movies will go until you get Rogue One. Rogue One was doo doo. Shock and surprise, TLJ, Last Skywalker, and all the Disney+ shows suck. Sonic Frontiers was "a good first step"tm, but it means nothing by itself. Shadow Generations, a game made by the Sonic B-Team, was really good! Things are on an upward trend. That's my two cents. That, and I don't know what you're smoking. Shadow Generations felt way better than Sonic Generations to play. Short hop or not. The return to the Adventure-Era handling felt fantastic. I actually had a hard time going back to playing the Sonic campaign after.
i beg to differ. Shadow generation's story is far from mid, i'd reccomend you watch pariah's video on it as he too had the impression that the story was weak, and at first glance it is, but it goes considerably deep, especially when you consider the implications of shadow accepting maria's wish back into his life after the events of shad05 where he ditched the old shadow completely. it's not any sa2, sonic heroes or unleashed, but it is pretty cool. but yeah, things seem to be getting better, that's why, for the first time after forces, i'm genuinely excited for a sonic project, and how ironic is it that this project is none other than Sonic Frontiers 2.
I 100% disagree, with Shadow generations having no drift. Because if you hold the quick step button, you turn a hard right, and a hard left. And there is a trick in the game to make the drift go straight, And this makes you go faster as well, And makes you go faster, in the open zone shadow is in. “Challenges to pad the timing,” You can activate hard mode on challenges, Where hard challenges are actually a challenge, and are better than the normal challenges, But I do agree with you generations challenges are better, because you only have to do it once. “Ranking system a mess in the game.” Nope blame time stop, Time stop balancing is terrible. Because if time stop, did not stop the timer, then the ranking system would require skill, to get a S rank. So would probably have the game, to a 8/10, Since it is a good DLC.
I honestly disagree with you saying that not having short-hops or drifts in Shadow generations is a bad thing, I am of the opnion that it works to make Shadow play different to Sonic while following the same formula, making Shadow be a tad bit more ridig than Sonic while Sonic is loosser and smoother at full speed, but i do agree it should be in the next Sonic game tho, if it is a boost formula one Also great video btw, me did like
That may have been a point if sonic still had his hops or any of his other stuff from earlier boost games but forces & frontiers have shown us that prob won't be the case goin forward
If they made a new game where Sonic and Shadow were playable and Sonic had short-hopping and drifting while Shadow didn't, that would honestly be a really cool idea where you have two similar but different gameplay styles that can focus on two types of level designs that play to different strengths. can't wait for lost world 2
Great video, personally IMO, the thing that would make or break the next game is if they expanded on the accidental movement tech from Frontiers and Shadow Gens, makes those games 10X more fun
Correction: You can air boost in Forces, there's clips of it in the video itself especially levels like Mortar Canyon where you can literally fly over everything thanks to the slight additional height you can pull off of.
The “air boost” is not what it was in Unleashed and Gens. Those only boosted you a little bit, where (like you said) Forces has you boosting over everything. It’s not the air boost I know. That’s what I mean. Much love ❤
Glad to see that you finally get to enjoy a Sonic game again, even if it’s not your favorite thing ever. Piece by piece they’re stepping in the right direction. Looking forward to watching this video in its entirety.
Pretty good video, I disagree seriously with some points, mainly the controls. The reduced move set sucks, but I think it's a pretty delusional take to say sonic gens controls better than shadow, I don't see it at all. Though I wholeheartedly agree with the step in the right direction bit. Sonic Team needs a good game, like an actual really good game, not divisively good games, a game someone can look at and know for sure "thats a good game"
8:53 it's never explained but there is a bit of a short hop workaround! you can use the sidestep button in midair to cancel some of the jump height while keeping your speed, and you can also boost while doing it best way to practice or mess around with this is at sunset heights act 1
I don't see how not having drift or short-jumps in a game that has levels and environments not designed is supposed to be a problem: I like pulling them in sonic generations, but if the levels are not designed around them in shadow gens and I can still enjoy the level, why bother? also 12:25 you're complaining that an open zone Collectathon is bad... because you have to collect in a open zone collectathon? yeah, explain me that logic...
Ahh… a Sonic Christmas gift 🎁 you shouldn’t have, thank you Dumbsville. Merry Christmas to you too. 🎄🎊 Also, what are your thoughts of Sonic 3? The ‘movie’ not the game.
It’s aight!! Best in the trilogy for sure. Not perfect tho. People are asking if I’d do a video on Sonic 3. But I’d have to do a video on 1 and 2 as well. But never say never.
I mean in all honesty take your time. But at least that movie is doing better than the Mufasa. Especially in money wise that is. 😅 Also if you’re gonna do one and two, you might as well do all 3 together.
This game isn't mid lol? I love how people outside of the fandom complain how Sonic fans hype something up to be way better then it actually is, then the person saying that completely ignores the irony of the fact that they're doing the same thing except they're not giving the game as much credit as it deserves. It's sad that barely anyone can give a good review of it and most of the reviews are either mindless praise or mindless hate like this comment here. Even then, Shadow Generations is a 8/10 and if you disagree then that's fine, but you're just not giving the game as much credit as it deserves because it's a Sonic game. The best Sega can do isn't just "mid". Hell, the person who made this video aka Dumbsvile would probably say that Sonic Team has made quite a bit of Sonic games that are above mid
Sega japan when they have to make a sonic game: *insert patrick with board nailed to his head* Sega hardlight making sonic dream team for apple arcade for some reason: *insert buff patrick*
I am playing Sonic Gens right now, and one thing I can say for certain: Sonic feels horrible to control compare to Shadow, like... it's night and day. Playing Sonic just reminds me how good Frontiers and Shadow feels. Having a precise jump, being able to walk and run at normal speeds properly, and having an aim on the airboost feels miles better over not having a short hop and a drift. I think it's also a shame that they went through the effort of giving Sonic his Drop Dash, but not his Bounce Stomp, that move was a game changer.
Shadow Gens I believe is where Sega and we as fans should set the, what I like to call,” the “bare minimum bar” in terms of Sonic’s quality. Shadow Gens is what future Sonic games can be in their weakest state. However, we should definitely push Sega to always strive for the gold standard like with the Classic games (minus Superstars), the Adventure duology, and Generations. Frontiers and Superstars I feel barely miss passing the bar that Shadow Gens sets. They’re fine for what they set out to do, but I still feel like they missed their marks exponentially.
Quick Question: Do you enjoy doing Time Attack in Sonic games? If so, which ones are your favorite to time attack (either with standard or unintended tech)? Also, Merry Christmas, dude! I've been watching your videos for years and they keep gettting better and better. Hope you recover your Klonoa 2 footage someday!
I actually liked shadow gens more than sonic gens. I also want the drift back and think it was a major loss but the level design in shadow gens is so damn good (especially chaos island) that it makes up for the lack of a drift. Also unleashed's day stages are better than sonic generations boost stages.
I feel like step in the right direction is an understatement for Shadow gens, it was a leap. We're so close to the ideal Sonic experience, I can feel it.
Still think that the fact that shadow generations has a level from sonic frontiers (where shadow isn't even in to begin with) but not a single level from shadow's own game is just downright criminal
I got and beat the game twice today for Christmas and my literal only complaints are that there isn't more of it and doom morph, like they made me love Kingdom Valley (alt paths and general speed) like wth guys.
Haven't commented in ages but seeing you make a new Sonic video was unexpected but welcoming. And sorry if I bore anyone with a long post. Personally while I do agree with many of your thoughts on Shadow Generations I didn't really mind the challenge acts and the absence of drifting too much in this game. While I do see how having to do EVERY challenge act is considered padding I found them all of them enjoyable enough to replay them all for S ranking or just for the sake of doing something a little different aside from just getting to the goal. If a few of the challenges were optional like the hard mode challenge stages then the padding wouldn't even be an issue. (Side note it is a neat visual narrative detail that Mephiles' gate requires four gates instead of three, as if time itself prefers to keep Mephiles FAR away from coming back.) As for the drift the level design in Shadow Generations is fairly designed with its control scheme in mind compared to Frontiers where most of the level design was ripped straight out of Generations, Unleashed or Adventure 2. And while I'd prefer the automatic turning to just be gone and have the players take turns themselves, the automation in Shadow Generations is nowhere near as present or egregious as Forces and Frontiers, and Shadow's movement and doom powers make up for the lack of drifting. As for the rest of the game, I love the theme they seem to be going for with Shadow's story here, with him literally facing his past and having to properly come to terms with it instead of just brushing off the pain of it, but I do wish there was just a little more interactions and cutscenes with the characters outside of the optional dialogue boxes. The absence of a proper stage from Shadow's own game will always be so weird because of how much they call back to that game otherwise with Black Doom being the main antagonist and Shadow's ties with the Black Arms being a major factor to his growing powers. So unless if they somehow DO follow up Shadow being thrown into Chaos Island with it incidentally foreshadowing events of a future game, playing Chaos Island, while a fun stage, just feels like the developers were tight on time and resources and needed to quickly think of SOMETHING to fill one more spot. And lastly while I love the cinematic angle they're going for the stages, my main concern is disrupting the flow of the gameplay after the first time playing and the Tokyo DLC stage, as sick as those scenes are, does highlight my concern because those two mid-stage scenes take up much of the time on that stage and aren't skippable for the sake of flow and speedrunning (even though S ranks in this game are way too easy). QTEs being harder and actually punishing the player for not inputting the button outside of Act 1 of the Ark, even if it doesn't kill you but just set you back, would've been more nice. Overall while I may not agree with ALL your thoughts and I do think Shadow Generations is still great as its own, I did enjoy watching your video on this game and understanding your critiques. Heck even if I personally like Sonic Frontiers, warts and all, I am curious to see if you ever decide on making a video on that game. Have a merry Christmas!
First things first, good video, these are ALL good and valid points made, but, at the same time, is there someone who really cares about these? You are literally the first person I've seen complaining that the short hop and the drift are gone. I mean, yeah, objectively speaking it sucks that the player lost moves that were previously present, but I barely ever used the short hop and the drift in the original Sonic Generations (ESPECIALLY the short hop), so I don't see how their absence is a big problem in Shadow Generations, with the addition that the level design doesn't warrant the use of the short hop or the drift, so they are not really needed here (and I think that the Doom Powers and the Chaos Control are MUCH MORE FUN mechanics to use, if we go by comparisons). The part of the side missions not being "on the side" anymore is a GENUINELY great point, easily the best in the video, but I liked doing them and thought they were fun (none of the stinky stuff from the original Sonic Generations) so I don't mind that, but I'm willing to take the L on this one and say that this is just me being "a fan consuming product" because IT IS JUST PADDING FOR TIME, THERE'S NO DENYING THAT. I'm pretty surprised you didn't mention the corners that were cut in the game, like Chaos Island being chosen as one of the levels while the Shadow The Hedgehog 2005 game got no level to represent it in the game that commemorates the history of SHADOW THE HEDGEHOG (and also some of the props from the Metal Overlord Boss Fight that are just things from Chemical Plant recolored). I do agree that the story is mid as fuck, but then again, who plays a Sonic game for the story of all things? Lastly, I do think that the game is a masterpiece, COLLECTIVE, Sonic AND Shadow Generations is a masterpiece (I know that it's a "X", but you know what I meant), they are both pretty small games with different stuff at fault, but together they make a package that is one of the best platformers in gaming (gameplay-wise, because they both have a shitty story), even if they do use different engines. Overall, this is pretty much an "agree to disagree" kind of situation, but I do think that most of the points are just exaggerated nitpicks that don't really ruin the experience of the game.
You'd be surprised with how many people care about Sonic lore. This is coming from a guy who used to care about Sonic lore lmao I, again, do think that short-hopping and drifting were pretty necessary moves in the boost formula's arsenal, and they were significant to me where I wouldn't call it a nitpick, as they added to how well the boost formula felt to speedrun and traverse through. Maybe I'm just a big fan of "micro-mechanics" like that in general, but that was a big appeal of Unleashed and Generations to me, so again I wouldn't call that complaint a nitpick. Thanks for the compliments tho! glad you enjoyed the video!! And yeah yknow what i agree, as a whole package, Sonic X Shadow Generations is a pretty great "masterpiece" (i wouldn't quite say that still, but it's damn close if we consider both games). Obviously, I was critiquing Shadow Gens specifically, which I don't feel is quite up to masterpiece potential, but I feel like it could be, which saddens me because Sonic Team has a habit of throwing everything out after making incredible strides.
@dumbsville I guess we go with "flawed masterpiece" then, and again, I still don't think that the exclusion of the short hop and the drift is a huge negative to Shadow Generations because the level design is so great that is doesn't need them (but that's coming from someone that almost never used them in Sonic Generations, so take that with a grain of salt). As I said earlier, it's an "agree to disagree" situation, continuing the conversation even further won't amount to anything, so let's just say that we play the game differently and that's about it. Also, these people that take the lore seriously are FUCKING DOOMED, I can confidently say that because I KNOW about the lore of the games, Silver being introduced in a fucking side-game for the PSP (Foghorn Sound Effect) because 06 ended with a reset, Blaze The Cat as a whole is a can of worms that DEFINITELY will never be open, Classic Sonic being retconned into being "a Sonic from another dimension" and then (apparently) being retconned AGAIN into being "Sonic from the past" and etc.

So you're just gonna ignore the fact that it's once again a nostalgia bait riding off another nostalgia bait, hmmm ? And don't give me the "it's an anniversary game" bs, because almost every game since 2011 has been nothing but recycling old visuals or straight up old stages.
i think the reason people are saying its 'peak' because compared to other sonic games it does a lot right. However, it doesn't do everything right, and hope they actually just take all the good parts of previous games and make a really good sonic game
I mostly agree with this video actually. I still find myself going back to Sonic Generations way more than Shadow Generations because the control is just so fun in that game. I also can’t stand the hub world and side missions, they’re not fun to explore or replay and bogs down the pacing. Once I finished the game, I just use the menu to replay levels. Finally, yeah I wouldn’t call this game a masterpiece. I think Sonic fan’s standards have gotten so low that anything that isn’t trash is automatically amazing. It’s great that this game is good, but what made it good is that it reached the bare minimum we’ve been looking for since 2011. We need to actually go up from here instead of down like Sonic Team has been doing for the past decade.
I agree that the game isn't a masterpiece, but a lot of these issues come from either just nitpicks or misunderstandings, like the drift or short hop. You don't need these mechanics in the game because the level design isn't based around them, farther more. The side missions aren't all terrible, that's over exaggeration. Either get good or try and have fun with them, I'm not sure what to tell you here bud. A fair bit of them are just platforming which feels good in this game so I don't see the criticism. The hub world also isn't bad, it feels like a step up from the miss-matched, randomly placed items in Sonic Frontiers. This game isn't only good because it reached the bare minimum. Actually no, it went way beyond that. What do you mean by the bare minimum? Sonic Generations was the bare minimum? Maybe now Sonic team should be making better games due to the time that passed, sure but Sonic Gens was not the bare minimum lol. Sonic Generations was an extremely good game and nowhere near the bare minimum of what makes a game good. That's just not giving the game enough credit.

As someone who enjoys the stories from Frontiers and Shadow Gens, I’d be interested in hearing what you didn’t like about them and what you’d consider an ideal Sonic story Great video btw
i love shadow generations. but i do wish the game was more dramatic and event filled from the fact it's a story where Shadow is practically going to say goodbye to Gerald and Maria for the final time. I honestly do wish they had an third ending for Sonic x Shadow Generations because Shadow Gens ends abruptly ngl
4:00 That's funny to hear since Generations actually nerfs many of Unleashed's moves or removes them. No roundhouse kick, no free wal jumping, no free Light Dash on rings. Even if the Air Dash is now mapped separatedly from the Air Boost, it still has pitiful range.
Part of me wishes I mentioned this in the video, but it's kinda fluff that takes focus away from the video being about Shadow Gens: I think Generations is both a refinement and a downgrade from Unleashed. It's weird. I think the homing attack being the same button as jump is a way better change, and the roundhouse kick is such a pointless move that makes very little sense and has no practical use, but I do think no free wall jumping and light dashing now only being on specific rings is a bad change. To be fair, maybe they removed them so players didn't break the game, but still I think the removal of them is a bad thing in all fairness. Generations still peak tho
Okay Dumbsville you must've missed the entire plot of Frontiers. You're exploring an abandoned digital plane that once belonged to the Coco/Ancients, the origins of Chaos himself. On top of that, we finally get answers on how the Chaos Emeralds came to Earth/Mobius in the first place
Also the Starfall Islands aren’t that interesting to me. For what’s supposed to be as you put it as, “an abandoned digital plane,” they’re extremely bland. It’s pretty clear that they were trying to do Breath of The Wild or Horizon Zero Dawn type locales, but those two found ways to make their locales unique. I know it’s supposed to be alien to what Sonic’s world is known for, but c’mon, they could’ve come up with something more unique than just “grassy plains, desert, and volcano.”
@@Butwhythough881yes but even the Ancients became Chao themselves. The radiation from the Master Emerald caused said mutation to happen. Chaos himself was a special case as the Chaos Emeralds kept him balanced enough to keep his corporal Ancient form. And we also now know that his brain is his Coco Talisman
@@dumbsvillestart playing the games for the story first then the gameplay and reasoning of why you're there will become second nature. I get it as a fellow person who grew up in the 90s that it's somewhat hard but that's why I still play games. It's the who, what and where that's the most interesting to me these days. When we get more lore, it enriches the story that came before it, much like Forces was Ian Flynn's love letter to his time working on the Archie line of comics for the franchise before he and the rest of the writing staff were handed over to IDW. Seriously if you look more into those things, you'd find more enjoyment out of the franchise as a whole
Okay so after fully watching the video this time, I agree with some of the complaints. I think the story could’ve better delved into Shadow’s creation and why he’s a hedgehog so similar to Sonic. Plus, I wish they adapted places from Sonic battle and Shadow 05 instead of modern stages, maybe even experiment with multiverse and alt universe levels as well. Also I’m disappointed that we didn’t get an Emerl fight like in the ova.
Everyone has their likes and dislikes. To me, I love Sonic Frontiers and Shadow Generations because it’s in that stage for Sonic’s redemption arc in the gaming industry. In my opinion, it’s returning to Adventure series for new fans of Sonic. Try to keep the formula fresh, but still giving its callback in the late 90’s to early 2000’s. The stories, while not masterpieces, are far better than Lost World and Forces (which I agree with other fans, Forces is a good game for new fans for getting in the series) in terms of writing. The collection section you were talking about, while also I don’t like, is understandable since it’s one of those trends from the first Sonic game. While you don’t need the Chaos Emeralds to continue the game, you need them to have the good ending. Frontiers, one of my favorite games, helps ease me for that collection unlike Unleashed. I still haven’t finish it to this day for the absurd amount of medals to continue the story. Another reason why I like Frontiers is the open world, combat system, music, and character development are the big highlights for being so good. (Also the Soap Shoes, best outfit cosmetic to have on Sonic.) Overall, while I respect your opinion, Frontiers and Shadow Generations are a step up in the right direction for the series, and I look forward to the future of Sonic the Hedgehog. In terms of the ending song for Frontiers, “We're only at the beginning of this one-way dream.”
Your opinion on Shadow Generations is basically mine 1 to 1. Its my 3rd favourite boost game. Got some of the best level design. But it overall feels like a downgrade from Gens and its omission of the Short Hop and Drift are a downgrade and i hope they add them back but i have a feeling they unfortunately wont.
I may be weird but personally the loose movement in Sonic Gens just does not work for me at all, it makes levels actually frustrating and annoying to play. I find games like SA1 and 2, Sonic P-06 or Shadow Generations much more fun because of the way they control
How does it make the levels frustrating to play when they're specifically designed around those controls? I think the problem that Dumbsvile has with Shadow Generations and the problem that many Sonic fans have with Sonic Generations is that both parties don't understand the fact that these are different games with different mechanics and levels that evolve around them. Sonic Generations has levels that compliment the games controls so people saying that the controls make the levels not the fun is not a real criticism because they simply aren't playing the game right because they can't understand that this game is different from the Adventure titles and thus, controls different. They act like the levels in Sonic Generations are just Sonic Adventure levels but with a boost which is not what the game is. That's what Shadow Generations is, sure but not base Gens. With Dumbsviles argument. Shadow Generations not having drift or short hop doesn't make the game worse because the levels are designed around not having them. What is the point of having a drift if the level isn't going to use it? With the short hop, I don't see the argument. You can short hop on Shadow Generations, just quickly press the jump button, yeah Shadow jumps higher then Sonic in Gens but that's not really an issue because once again. The levels aren't really designed around using a very small short hop
Tbh i like the frontiers/shadow gens controls better than sonic gens cus of how slippery sonic gens controls always were, i always get sonic (and shadow) are supposed to he fast, but not to the point where the speed is uncontrollable and also frontiers to me is just a flawed masterpiece only cus of how much fun i personally had but i understand all the flaws people are upset at THEY REALLY NEED TO ACTUALLY RE-ADD THE DRIFT THOUGH P L E A S E S E G A
Tbh, I'm hardly expecting a peak story from Sonic of all things. If I get fun gameplay, cool moments, and a decent soundtrack, I'm pretty satisfied. (also, Chaos Island Act 1 slaps, it's Kingdom Valley Act 2 that's the worst of the soundtrack imo)

THERE IS NO MISTAKES WITH THIS GAME RAAAHHHH🗣🗣🗣🔥🔥🔥❗️❗️❗️🦅🦅🦅
11:59 You can fast travel to each location and level through the pause menu.
How was Sonic 3s story mid? Ask basically anyone, even non-Sonic fans and they would say otherwise
i beg to differ. Shadow generation's story is far from mid, i'd reccomend you watch pariah's video on it as he too had the impression that the story was weak, and at first glance it is, but it goes considerably deep, especially when you consider the implications of shadow accepting maria's wish back into his life after the events of shad05 where he ditched the old shadow completely. it's not any sa2, sonic heroes or unleashed, but it is pretty cool. but yeah, things seem to be getting better, that's why, for the first time after forces, i'm genuinely excited for a sonic project, and how ironic is it that this project is none other than Sonic Frontiers 2.
yeah same i dont know why he say that like they are really good games in general
I honestly disagree with you saying that not having short-hops or drifts in Shadow generations is a bad thing, I am of the opnion that it works to make Shadow play different to Sonic while following the same formula, making Shadow be a tad bit more ridig than Sonic while Sonic is loosser and smoother at full speed, but i do agree it should be in the next Sonic game tho, if it is a boost formula one
Also great video btw, me did like
That may have been a point if sonic still had his hops or any of his other stuff from earlier boost games but forces & frontiers have shown us that prob won't be the case goin forward
The Sonic franchise really didn't let Dumbsy get away that easily 💀
Ngl i feel bad for you since the next mainline game is probably gonna be a refinement of the frontiers formula
I mean if it’s actually good and I actually like it, I can’t exactly feel bad lol
If all of the gameplay is dumbsy then he is way too good at sonic games

best way to practice or mess around with this is at sunset heights act 1
I don't see how not having drift or short-jumps in a game that has levels and environments not designed is supposed to be a problem: I like pulling them in sonic generations, but if the levels are not designed around them in shadow gens and I can still enjoy the level, why bother?
also 12:25 you're complaining that an open zone Collectathon is bad... because you have to collect in a open zone collectathon? yeah, explain me that logic...

The best Sega can do is mid, and they usually don't even get close to that bar, so Sonic fans finally get mid and think it's the second coming

Haven't seen a Sonic video on this channel in a while. Glad to hear that you thought the game was good. Merry Christmas BTW.

The only bad thing about this game is the remade voice acting in the sonic portion. I hate it so much
Still think that the fact that shadow generations has a level from sonic frontiers (where shadow isn't even in to begin with) but not a single level from shadow's own game is just downright criminal
I got and beat the game twice today for Christmas and my literal only complaints are that there isn't more of it and doom morph, like they made me love Kingdom Valley (alt paths and general speed) like wth guys.

(Side note it is a neat visual narrative detail that Mephiles' gate requires four gates instead of three, as if time itself prefers to keep Mephiles FAR away from coming back.)
As for the drift the level design in Shadow Generations is fairly designed with its control scheme in mind compared to Frontiers where most of the level design was ripped straight out of Generations, Unleashed or Adventure 2.
This is coming from a guy who used to care about Sonic lore lmao
I, again, do think that short-hopping and drifting were pretty necessary moves in the boost formula's arsenal, and they were significant to me where I wouldn't call it a nitpick, as they added to how well the boost formula felt to speedrun and traverse through.
Also, these people that take the lore seriously are FUCKING DOOMED, I can confidently say that because I KNOW about the lore of the games, Silver being introduced in a fucking side-game for the PSP (Foghorn Sound Effect) because 06 ended with a reset, Blaze The Cat as a whole is a can of worms that DEFINITELY will never be open, Classic Sonic being retconned into being "a Sonic from another dimension" and then (apparently) being retconned AGAIN into being "Sonic from the past" and etc.

i think the reason people are saying its 'peak' because compared to other sonic games it does a lot right.
That's just not giving the game enough credit.

i love shadow generations. but i do wish the game was more dramatic and event filled from the fact it's a story where Shadow is practically going to say goodbye to Gerald and Maria for the final time.
On top of that, we finally get answers on how the Chaos Emeralds came to Earth/Mobius in the first place
i don’t care
Except we already got the origin of Chaos. He’s a mutated Chao as a result of being exposed to the Master Emerald.

Shadow Generations was made by the same people that made forces showing what they could've made with forces if they have more time
Okay so after fully watching the video this time, I agree with some of the complaints.
Not having a drift is so much better, especially cause the open world doesnt need one
16:10 Legacy of Kain reference? Where’s the Legacy of Kain essay, Dumbsville?
2025 🗣️🗣️
Merry Christmas, Dude.
(Also the Soap Shoes, best outfit cosmetic to have on Sonic.)
Overall, while I respect your opinion, Frontiers and Shadow Generations are a step up in the right direction for the series, and I look forward to the future of Sonic the Hedgehog.
Lmao Paraiahs video was on your search feed about the game 16:31
4:05 the air boost is still there and improved but its a shame none of the level design accommodates for it....forces...man
I may be weird but personally the loose movement in Sonic Gens just does not work for me at all, it makes levels actually frustrating and annoying to play.
Tbh i like the frontiers/shadow gens controls better than sonic gens cus of how slippery sonic gens controls always were, i always get sonic (and shadow) are supposed to he fast, but not to the point where the speed is uncontrollable
and also frontiers to me is just a flawed masterpiece only cus of how much fun i personally had but i understand all the flaws people are upset at
THEY REALLY NEED TO ACTUALLY RE-ADD THE DRIFT THOUGH
P L E A S E S E G A
Tbh, I'm hardly expecting a peak story from Sonic of all things. If I get fun gameplay, cool moments, and a decent soundtrack, I'm pretty satisfied. (also, Chaos Island Act 1 slaps, it's Kingdom Valley Act 2 that's the worst of the soundtrack imo)
4:06 Forces removed air boosting, wall jumping and light dashing?
Dumbsville more like Smartsville (im sorry, i love u)
Idk y'all but I miss the disclaimer intro that shit was a banger
