Please tell it's best counter move 😭. Once I was the best chess player in my class whom no one was able to beat and suddenly my friend learn this move and with help of my some major blender ( and my overconfidence) he made chess look like one sided but I was able to draw the match . Still , it was like a defeat to me and I was just frustrated cause I wasn't able to have a rematch due to lack of time . Overall , tell me it's best counter moves.
I know I’m late to the party but holy cow man this opening has got me out of a rut. same with b3 for white. So tricky to play against finally got me back to 1800 thanks you! Definitely my favorite opening
Nice. I keep experimenting with 1...b6 and I also like it. I have limited time now for chess so I need to limit the options down so this feels right. I'll have to also take another look at 1.b3.
I love this opening b3 for white and b6 for black. Igor please do more and more videos on b3 and b6. I would like to master this opening. Request to put more videos on these openings your daily games. I have watched other channel youtube videos but they have different variations than you taught but i like your variations only because it is clean and clear and your explanation is awesome any one can understand clearly. Such a beautiful teacher you are. Big fan of you.
Super. I just broke 1500 10min rapid thanks to this. I've been playing white ok at 1400 but I struggled playing black pieces, but this really clarified a lot for me in the defense I like best. Thank you so much fort his excellent teaching!
Thank you! I've been playing b3 a lot since your last video. It came out literally the day after I decided to begin studying Nimzo-Larsen! and I was curious about this b6 idea too.
yes I would like to see the continuation of the line with Bd6. I´m playing this defense with black since you loaded this video, and I´m having some success.
Magic Master i love your videos and your courses on the Academy! Its fantastic play with a solid preparation! you promise 3.d3 and we are waiting for it! Thanks for all!!!! You are the best
I play 3. Bd3 as White generally doing well. I've even had the Greco study from the 1640 in a rapid game. 3 Bd3, f5? 4 exf5, Bxg2 and you sac your Queen to checkmate with a lone Bishop on g6. Would like to see how black combats Bd3.
Amazing. Just found that my moves are an actual opening. I Play it with Black and White against anything lmao So many lines you showed i had a million times. Definitly will try First b2 with White instead of g2
Thank you GM Igor! I was just thinking about requesting you for a standard way to play as Black against PD4 or PE4 by white and you posted this video today! This is excellent! Thank you very much!!
The proper way in this opening to defend the e4 pawn; Bd3. The C pawn must remain mobile in case white needs to play c3 or c4 in the future and developing a knight on c3 is going to get it pinned. White is also a move closer to castling Kingside with Bd3. I would give Nc3 a '?' here meaning it is a bad move.
Anyone notice that when 1...b6, Bb6, e6 is deployed against 1.d4, it is called the 'English Defense'. But when the same structure is deployed against 1.e4, it's called the 'Owen Defense'. It seems the ECO chart needs to be updated.
I am playing this opening and after e4 b6 my opponents sometimes play something besides d4. I would love it if you could go over some of those lines too! Thank you so much for your videos, I enjoy them and find them to be very helpful!
How about the opponent decides to go A3 as soon as you put the bishop in B4? which is a more common response for white to attack the bishop immediately, based on the ideas explained in the video what would be the best response for black after A3?
a few years ago...Igor did a comprehensive two part series on Owens defense which details in part two how to deal with A3 by white. The link to part one is th-cam.com/video/5-ACdKjp4QQ/w-d-xo.html and this then leads into part two...

I know that I am kind of late with this question.. But I really want a good plan agnst what if in the last variation.. White plays after d4e4 pawn center.. Bc4 n jump the knight to H4 aiming for F5outpost in the future!! What's blacks best plan to counter it, Igor..? I am playing agnst 1500 to 1700 guys here..
At 13:15 did you reverse forward and back? You say ‘the knight does not go forward it will go back’ but the lines you show has the knight moving forward
Along the lines of the St George Which Miles used to get the better of Karpov. I could be wrong but thinking that the St George was an adaptation of Owen's defence.
Great video: Superb instruction. I just discovered these videos this week, thankfully. I will give 1...b6 a thorough study and learn from my losses and draws. In combination with the video on the Larsen's opening 1.b3 (actually, I seem to confront 1.Nf3 with my main reply being 1...d5 2.b3 and, though quite similar, the theory is slightly different but I am certainly not a master player), I am motivated to avoid giving up 1.b3 due to such poor past results. Thanks for the video and I hope to discover why this particular opening has proven more difficult for me than more complicated openings (and I do understand the ideas of the openings I use most often). I haven't looked at all the videos available here, yet. Hope to find one on the Reti opening. Keep up the good work.
You deserve way more credit then you are getting right now! I learned a lot from your video's. Because I learned so much I want to know a simple thing; because I have the feeling that everything falls apart if white chase my bishop away with first move A3. What do we do then? I can move bischop to E7, but that makes this in to a normal game of chess? What do I miss?

Different people and different contexts. I can see this opening causing a huge amount of issues for under 1200 chess. Or being excellent in Blitz. Or just as a little trick to suprise a higher rated player. It's a fun little line. I watched because I have seen it a few times from my opponents and wanted to see if there was a way not to make it a very frustrating opening for White.
Igor, I've been experimenting with Owen's defense to get a position with black comparable to an inverted colle-zuckertort. Do you think this opening can transpose easily into it?
Thank you for this video. I do have one question at the five minute mark of the video, you mentioned that in some variations you could move the black bishop A3 to exchange bishops. Since the black bishop is only protected by the knight, wouldn’t you lose a minor piece? If white bishop takes A3, knight takes white bishop, queen would take knight
You said that if white bishop pins our knight we can easily threaten it with the pawn. And why not white do the same?... It was not covered in the video.

You're welcome 😊
Of course we want the continuation!! Thanks a lot!
Indeed, its continuation is truly appreciated...! Thanks in advance...!! Keep up the good work...!!!
I love 1..b6! Thanks!! 🙏🙏👏👏

Yes we need a part 2.
You really help with my black setup and I have a tournament and I think this will help so thank you!
You're a chess hero

I want more thanks for making the leson
PLease Igor do make a part 2 of this video.
Hello! Is there a part 2? Thank you for your courses.

Yes please! More on 1...b6 please! And how about a video on the similar English Defence (d4, b6, c4, e6 then black plays Bb7). Thank you Igor.

What if the white knight after C3, his next move is H3 with the opposite knight?
Your videos are awesome, and love that accent😉
Are you getting adequate compensation for all this quality instruction you're giving us?
At 12:03 you point out that the bishop can't go away. But if Bd3, then Nxd4 doesn't work because of Ba6+! Thanks for this very instructive lesson.
1.b3-d5
2.e3-c5
3.Nf3-Bg4 or 3Nf3-Nf6 than g6
Please reply

Would love to see more lines in this opening. Thanks!
This opening is underrated. I’m not sure why chess players don’t like it as much
My experience is that after i play Bb6 many push e5 and the game becomes uncomfortable after that.
I love this opening, it's my go to
Can you make a part 2 covering more variations
Super Job please make more Video of b6 an b3 thank you
Again great video GM 👍👍Good variations and easy to understand...
I hope you will cover some gambits specially for blitz games...!
Thank you 🙏
Great video i learned so much
Nice line!
What do you do if when you move your Bishop to B4, and they move their pawn to A3? If you drop back to A4, then they can move the knights pawn to B3.
Exactly, everyone is gonna move the pawn when they see Bb4

A3 to stop our bishop from coming to b4

My father (Yuogslav) opens as white with this at least 90% of the time. And half the time he'll double it. It's always kept me on my toes.
I might suggest to illustrate a master or amateur submitted game with opening analysis

Dear Igor. why do recommend this opening (and the equivalent B3) when elsewhere you discuss all the weaknesses this opening creates?
Different people and different contexts. I can see this opening causing a huge amount of issues for under 1200 chess. Or being excellent in Blitz. Or just as a little trick to suprise a higher rated player.
It's a fun little line. I watched because I have seen it a few times from my opponents and wanted to see if there was a way not to make it a very frustrating opening for White.
B4-B5 works with white at least around 14-1500.
Igor, I've been experimenting with Owen's defense to get a position with black comparable to an inverted colle-zuckertort. Do you think this opening can transpose easily into it?
As the opponent of someone who played the Owen’s Defense, I can confirm I have no idea what happened
Good Observation. You can prepare it with Qe8 or if White's queen moves from e2.
please make a video of queens indian defence!

Question: Isn't at 5:28 B2 to A3 a good move?
But Nc3 is a move you don't want to make with white in this setup
I use this opening all the time to avoid E4/E5 or D4 games
4:59 wouldn't trading off bishops be bad idea? Knight retakes then opponent take with queen?
What if your opponent just pushes the pawn and not allow u to play Nf6 ,instead of Playing that Bishop to d3??
what happens if after e4 he goes bc4?
Super🥳
Your cat is amazing 🥰
I like this professor this opening I study these before oh my King merry xmas to all chess player of the glove uscf member 2004,2021
You said that if white bishop pins our knight we can easily threaten it with the pawn. And why not white do the same?... It was not covered in the video.
Let's go guys, road to 1000 👍
i got sidetracked the whole video by how cute your cat was XD
😎😎😎😎🔥🔥🔥🔥 yessssssss
Show when white respond with bd3
What about h3
What if black plays A3 kicking the bishop back? Knight no longer pinned!!!
What if their response to pinning the knight is to go pawn a3? I'm totally shit at chess, so my first instinct is to kick it tf out.
All of my opponents play a3 after i pin the knight what do i do?😭
After pinning the white knight
13:24 gajah g5
I miss the cat in the background of the videos
instead cant they play a3
Actually my reaction to 1…b6 is 😂😂😂
White will not play such like as u say
