DDD was super helpful for me (I more than doubled the number of minutes I worked on plotting my novel than what I did on the 1st)! Feeling good about my progress although I am worried about getting in 2 hours of work every day during a work week. We'll see!
Not too bad so far, I hit my daily goal for yesterday, haven't done much yet today but hoping to get some words in before dinner. It's been a busy day tbf, so I'm trying not to be too hard on myself. Thanks so much to you and your team for setting this up - RDC has given me the courage to finally set myself a solid goal for my writing after years of project hopping and abandoning work. Love from a young fan in the UK
Very slow start, committed to Sapphire level and so far zero words written in mss, but to be fair, I’m still outlining my chapters and scenes using your brainstorming video. Love the rough draft challenge options. Good luck to all 🎉
Thank you for the Rough Draft Challenge. I am enjoying it so much! 50,000 words in a month was never attainable for me. I am aiming for Emerald this month and it has reduced the stress and pressure so much to know that the goal is something I can reasonably attain (and maybe even exceed). I am enjoying November so much more this year!
Last night was my very 1st time participating in a live writing sprint! It was so much fun and helpful. Thank you Sarra for all that you do! I know we're only a couple days into November but I am enjoying the Roughdraft Challenge more than I ever did NaNoWriMo (50k Was always so overwhelming!)! I hope you're enjoying your day off and that your eyes are getting the rest they need! Eye strain is no joke! ♡
My eyes have really been bothering me too, but I think it's allergies. A lot of desert plants are in bloom right now because the main heat is over and it's so nice out. Consider an antihistamine if your eyes aren't better... could be too much pollen. (I don't really have allergies, but when the pollen counts are up, I struggle to manage all the particulates in the air. My nose fills up and my tears get thick.) 💕🌞🌵😷
I am enjoying this challenge more than I ever did Nanowrimo. The simplicity of the website (thank you, George!) is so much less stressful and the graph is perfect. Thanks so much for creating this and I love the vlogs. Your little unicorns were adorable, and they looked like they were having a blast.
I love the new intro. I've been watching old Diaries as I've been doing plotting stuff. And it's so amazing how much both Andrew and Evie have grown up. It's like whiplash! Like, hang on, two videos ago you were just a baby! Lol. Both girls looked adorable with their headbands and face paint. And she absolutely can be a mermaid! That was soo sweet. My start has been slow too. I've had a lot going on, and I'm feeling more compelled to do things by hand to start and then transferring to typing.
Slow start here but I’m okay with that. Spent the day with 2 of my teens doing activities and had not a single drop of guilt. So glad the RDC is a realistic event that really wants you to succeed without sacrificing your family or sanity!
17:30 You just inspired me to use some of the words I've brainstormed. I wasn't going to because they're not in my manuscript, but dang it I did the work!
Looks like Evie had such a great time. Precious time with our kids is the most wonderful thing. It's my older son's 23rd birthday today and on these days especially I ask myself where the time went. So fleeting in the grand scheme of things, but I wouldn't trade a minute of it. 💙
This video was so helpful! I’ve been brainstorming my book too and you reminded me some other things I want to consider! I need to go finish your mind map video!! I am slow going too at just over 1,000 words, but I’m also trying to nail down some important points so I hopefully won’t have to throw stuff put because I didn’t take the time to think the story through at least a little bit. Also, Unicorn world looks amazing! So glad you all had a blast there!
Look how happy Evie was at Unicorn World! ☺️ Today I read all the poems I have for this short collection. I still need to choose between two of them. I did pick the materials for the self-portrait I'll draw. The format for it as well~ Honoring your procress, yay! That's something I could implement. Anime! I totally get it. I am currently watching Naruto and it follows a similar structure. Would love to know what kind of anime do you enjoy watching 😊
Still working on plotting and world building. No words yet. OMG. Unicorn world makes me want to be a kid again!!! Definitely need a unicorn 🦄 in my novel.
Great post. I learned “Breath” episodes/scenes as Park Benches where we spend time with one character on a bench in their private world. Often PB’s have humor to give the reader/audience opportunities to reset their nervous system.
Consider turning all of your devices to Dark Mode! Get rid of all that white. I even write with a darker digital 'piece of paper' so that it doesn't hurt so bad.
I get eye strain really bad from screens and have found recently that taking iron supplements helps a lot for some reason. You might already be taking those, but I thought I'd mention it in case it's helpful! Sometimes lutein capsules help, too.
I love Fairy Tale!! It's one of my favorite anime. We are actually doing a total rewatch as well because a sequel series has come out of it. I'd love to write an episodic serial like it someday, too. I need to go!!
Today might be a rest day for me too (I did just take a nap 😉). Or maybe I'll write after all. I was hoping to get caught up to where I "should" be, but it's totally fine if I don’t!
The Rough Draft Challenge is such a godsend! My first fantasy novel, The Ice Moves for No One will be published in May 2025, and I'm using the RDC to work on book 2 of the saga. I'm editing while I do this (editing two books) so the flexibility is amazing. I'm not sureif 50k is in my stars, but I can still win the RDC!
I haven't started RDC because food poisoning, severe storms knocked out power and internet, and just life in general. Hopefully day 4 will be better. I already lowered my goal to 25K. Not what I wanted to do but for my sanity I did. I'm still hoping for more, but that's what I set on the site. The good thing is since I'm using the RDC site there is none of those badges for "updates progress every day." I used to obsess over that one and if I missed a day I lost it. I'd like to write all 30 days, but that's not always realistic for me. Side note: Watching you say hi to us while you were vlogging and we were watching you during sprints was funny.
The only thing that works for eye strain for me is a screen detox and rest. Hopefully, you had a good self care day on Sunday? This was a super-helpful vlog. Coming back to take notes 😃 Thank you!
That is so cute! Unicornland seems like exactly the kind of place I would have loved as a kid. It's so nice to see someone having fun with their process.
Thank you for offering the rough draft challenge! It's been really motivating. I started a day late but I still have 10,700 words at the end of today and that's what I call a win! Now I'm gonna... have a nap. a long nap.

Do you have any resources or tips on how to write Episodic type books? My current WIP - I visualize it more like a tv show. And I am struggling to write it for that reason.
There isn't a lot out there, but Kimboo York has a book on writing serials, there's a book called "How to write light novels and webnovels" that was recommended to me as well. I'm also reading save the cat writes for TV.
You might want to get your eyeglass prescription checked. I am older and work on screens 9-14 hours a day and the best thing I did was get a computer eyeglasses from the eye doctor. The glasses are my prescription made to work 20-28 inches from the screen and are a full lense so I don’t have to tilt my neck like with progressives. The eye doctor asked me to measure my distance from the screen. Hope you find a solution. ❤
I watched a replay of your double down video and was able to hit my word goal. I can get to 1500 without an issue but getting to 2000 my goal can be like pulling teeth. 😂 thanks for the help getting there.

But next week I have two 15-hour day shifts with sleep in and I designated those days as days off. Either I will be able to double up or not write at all, so we will see... But in a spirit of procrastination, I bought a scrapbook, metallic pens and glue and I plan to finally sort the stack of photos from past few years... XDDD
Anime. I am currently watching and reading One Piece. I've asked my husband how does this work so well, I've been studying the story structure of anime to get ideas.
Hi Sarra, when it comes to structuring a series (and your thoughts on if two books work or four), check out chapter 16 of Jessica Brody's "Sace the Cat Writes A Young Adult Novel". There she's shows very good how the Beats work in Duologies, Trilogies and more :) That helped me a lot! :) Cheering you on and sending you much love and creative vibes
Hi Sarra, As an anime lover as well, was wondering if what you are describing is the anime arc, like for the shibuya incident arc in JJK, or the sworship village in Demon Slayer? That's how I understand it at least. That's was a lovely video as always. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge. 😊
Hi Sarra! What pen do you use for journaling? I feel like I need a “Sarra’s stationery list” to send my husband and say “just get me all of this for Christmas” 😂❤
@ the way you were explaining the series and how it works. Not the story concept. :) But seriously, it’s 15 seasons, if you ever get time, I highly recommend the series
Is anyone else having trouble signing in to the rough draft challenge site? It won't let me just sign in. It keeps wanting me to create an account, but I already did that the other day.

This sounds a lot like the 6-act story structure by Marshall Dotson. 👍✍️
Ooh I haven't heard of this!! Going to look it up thank you
@HeartBreathings I just read it. It's really good. I hope you'll like it too. 🤓
Interesting! I'll look it up too!
@GodwinOkojieII I hope you enjoy it! 👍
@Dan-ne2et I bet I will!
I'm still on the slow start....🤣 (It's Nov 4)
Slow start is okay too! I'm also slow start!
Cheering you on and sending you much love and creative vibes
Hi Sarra,
As an anime lover as well, was wondering if what you are describing is the anime arc, like for the shibuya incident arc in JJK, or the sworship village in Demon Slayer?
That's how I understand it at least.
That's was a lovely video as always. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge. 😊
Hi Sarra! What pen do you use for journaling? I feel like I need a “Sarra’s stationery list” to send my husband and say “just get me all of this for Christmas” 😂❤
Sounds like a season of Supernatural
My story idea? I haven't seen any of that show except season one!
@ the way you were explaining the series and how it works. Not the story concept. :) But seriously, it’s 15 seasons, if you ever get time, I highly recommend the series
Oh Goddess, oh Goddess, oh oh oh. My eleven-year-old-inner-child is fixated on the UNICORN WORLD???
Is anyone else having trouble signing in to the rough draft challenge site? It won't let me just sign in. It keeps wanting me to create an account, but I already did that the other day.
