Brief high angle shot of traffic moving along an urban road. We cut to the Caraboot, a mini with a caravan attached to the rear and a boat on the roof, driving along a country road. The vehicle stops in a field; the caravan is released from the car by a kind of unwinding mechanism; two women go inside and start preparing food.
The car and boat are driven down to the river by the men, leaving an open space at the end of the caravan! The men launch the rowing boat and go fishing / angling until they are called back to the caravan by the women for a nice cup of tea and some chocolate biscuits. It looks rather cramped, but apparently sleeps four.
Note: on file are several pieces of press info on the Caraboot and a letter from Euxton Coachcraft Ltd who manufactured the vehicle.
Cuts exist - see separate record.

The man that invented the caraboot is my grandad Eric Newby. I think his business partner was called Norman Theobald. My grandad had patents for this and i think my dad still has them. I'm thinking of contacting Johnny off late brake show maybe as he likes quirky things like this. Also I have seen the caraboot for sale within the last few years. So I hope someone still has it.

I would absolutely love to see this on the 'Late Brake Show'!! The 'Caraboot' is something that I have never seen before and I have seen many types of trailers with boats on the top and various forms of motorhomes. Nothing like this though. Ingenious idea!

I wonder why it didn't sell?

Indeed. I'm sure a concept such as this would sell today. A better alternative possibly than towing a small car behind the motor home. VW manufactured a similar vehicle but the "camper" part was attached via a swan neck to a fifth wheel on the roof of a VW Beetle, common in the USA now with the towing vehicle being a flat bed SUV. Innovative designs that I would have thought had prospects.

and while the men play after having sold their souls at the office, the women are supposed to do what they do at home. Cook, clean and spread the legs for the men. No wonder women started to want to go to work outside the house and kick men out.

My grandad Eric worked 6 .5 to 7 days a week. We would go round on a Sunday, and he would be doing estimates and drawings till 11 at night.
We would have Sunday lunch and he would be back in his study.

You could almost forget it's not a caravan... except for the largish bit that's not there.
