Something I noticed in the movie was that both Leo and Casey covered Splinter's face when they were holding the picture. Could that most likely deter that Splinter was the one who technically died first before his sons did? Was he supposed to die before the apocalypse even started?

I think he definitely died pretty early on. Either shortly after Raph (since we can infer that Raph died before Donnie since Leo’s prosthetic is modelled after Raph’s arm) or a little bit before. Not just because of that little detail with the photo, but also because I have a hard time believing Splinter would
A) let his sons die before him
B) even make it that long. Let’s be honest, Splinter isn’t the youngest, even in the show, so his age + being in a literal apocalypse probably didn’t do wonders for his health
