He makes a great point about the soccer coaches or even baseball coaches and I would have to agree with him but it is probably done that way out of necessity. I've coached both soccer and baseball and neither require any certification but I also coach hockey and it might be different in other states but in MN your first year you can be an "on ice helper" at 4-6U with just a back ground check. However there needs to be at least 1 certified coach on the ice at all times. After that year you have to do your level 1 certification and that is only good for 1 year unless you stay at 8U or younger. Once you move past 8U to 10U+ you have to take 2, 3, and 4 in consecutive years, with the option to go to level 5 which is required to coach Bantams 14U and above. Once you get to 4 that is good for 3 years before you have to take the continued education course and no one blinks at this but the associations pay for it. In soccer and baseball, until you get to that 10U travel age they struggle to find coaches and seem to just take whatever they can get.
This was a great interview from Taylor Twellman. It's really good to hear his perspective
