    Just had renovations done at my house (2021). The wall where the kitchen phone was was demolished. I told the electrician that I needed the phone wiring moved to a different location. He was a younger guy and laughed. He told me he had never run telephone wiring before. In fact, he didn't have any wiring in his van. Luckily, I had some from years ago and he took care of my request. He was actually proud to pick up the phone and hear a dial tone.

      I work for AT&T and have encountered numerous times where the line was lost in a kitchen remodel, glad he was able to save and relocate it for you

    Most of the audience for films like these were AT&T employees at the endless meetings they had.

    This doesn't look like a consumer video, more likely a training video for sales staff. I worked electronics retail for a number of years, granted I started almost 20 years after this video was made but things haven't changed that much. It would probably be sent out to electronics stores to help them figure out how to sell AT&T products.

    I like the phones in the video and nearly all of them can still be able to send and receive calls in today's business places or homes. You need to check with your telephone or cable TV company if the phone you want to use works in your building or home. Good video from AT&T of 1985.

    Today, if he called in sick, then played tennis, his or his friend's phone would be used to take pics of him on the court, which would be posted on social media, and he's fired.

      Pre 1984: You have to rent our phones from your phone company. If you owned a phone it could go nuts and break the network and your neighbor can't call 911 and their house will burn down. Everything has to be approved and work perfectly.
      Post 1984: Screw the phone company, buy your phones from us! And buy answering machines, auto dialers, speaker phones, long cords, and plug as many devices into your wall as you can.

    10:00 then Scanners had more than 200 Channels and you could listen in on the base frequency on 46 MHz VHF low-band and hear both sides talking.

    • @jamesslick4790
      @jamesslick4790 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      True, But in '85 200 channel scanners were expensive as hell, most average scanners had 8 or 10 channels. Most people wound not dedicate an entire scanner for this. The best way to listen in on cordless phones (and "baby" monitors of the era was a multiband radio with a "VHF-Lo: Band (30mhz-54mhz)would "work" these bands. Also TV sets made before 1983 (with the UHF channels 70-83 intact.) could receive AMPS (the early analog cellular system) phone calls!

    • @arbutuswatcher
      @arbutuswatcher 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The best thing in the 1990's was having a 60 watt, Low Band VHF (42-50 MHz) Motorola Maxtrac (mobile radio), pre-programmed with all 25 cordless phone channels, & equipped with a DTMF (Touch Tone) Microphone. The reception was incredible, and you could inject your own comments on calls! It gave a whole new meaning to 'reach out & touch someone'! :p Crazy that was over 25 years ago. Now, there isn't crap to listen to ...... it's all gone digital. :(

    MAn, we had that cordless phone back in the late 80's. It picked up neighbor's phone calls. Me being a nosy kid I listened in to them. You could even pick up their line when it was free and make crank calls like crazy. I called numbers in Japan, Italy , UK and many more. The owners of the ATT cordless telephone got such with the super expensive international call bill. Yeah, dick move. Also, rotary phones sucked @$$! AT&T could make money selling those to douchebag hipsters.

      I’m pretty sure the reason that stuff was allowed was because first of all this was after the bell system break up but mainly because it was not meant for The public to see it was meant for salesman. Sorry for my bad grammar
